Torn apart

Dear friend,

We’ve been working toward immigration reform for 3 years and are now asking for your help.

Please support this work and all that Sojourners accomplishes.

Donate now!

Kevin has never met his big sister.

When Kevin’s parents migrated to the United States, escaping political turbulence in their African nation, they left their daughter behind with the belief that they could bring her here after they’d found jobs and a home.

It’s been 10 long years and - due to our complex and broken immigration system -  this family has not yet been reunited. Kevin, who was born here, has never met his big sister.

The struggle of this family is not unusual. Sojourners is telling our churches and our nation to restore justice and clarity to the immigration system. We’re leading the call for humane immigration reform. Support all of our work today!

When I first met this family, they were expending immense mental and financial resources on a dead-end process to bring their daughter to the United States. As meetings with immigration officials on both continents took place, we gathered regularly to pray for their family’s reunification.

We don’t want our political leaders to dismiss this opportunity for reform simply because it’s not worth the risk of losing their seats.

We know that significant social change doesn’t begin with Congress. It requires a movement of people who can look beyond political calculations and seek resolutions to the moral and family crisis caused by this brokenness. It’s a call for people of faith who understand and follow the biblical mandates of welcoming the stranger and reforming the nation (Deuteronomy 10:19 and Jeremiah 7:5-7).

Sojourners has been convening, educating, and mobilizing Christians on this issue for the past three years, and our mobilizing work is increasing now. Here’s some of what we’ll be doing in March:

-Joining with more than 100,000 activists on the National Mall on March 21 to show the strength of our movement.
-Inviting and assisting faith leaders to come to Washington for this event.
-Hosting a prayer vigil before the march.
-Scheduling meetings between faith leaders and the White House and Congress throughout the month of March.

We need your generous support to fund this and all our work at Sojourners. Please give today.

I’m ready for one big sister to not be stuck on another continent – for her brother’s prayers to be transformed into hugs, wrestling sessions, and all the joy that having a sister with him will bring. It’s time for reform that will reunite families.

With hope,

Leslie Abell, Sojourners

P.S. For your gift of $100 or more, we’ll send you a copy of Christians at the Border, by M. Daniel Carroll R., a chance to get informed about faith and immigration.  Click here to give.

* The names in this story have been changed, although this family will be one of thousands that will join the March for America on the National Mall this coming Sunday.
