Combative Tharoor denies Modi charges, says won’t resign

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 10:02 AM PDT

Shashi Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Embattled Shashi Tharoor, India’s minister of state for external affairs, Wednesday said he would not oblige his critics by resigning as he had done no wrong in the billowing controversy over the Kochi IPL franchise. As the crackling mixture of politics, sports, money and sleaze gripped a cricket-crazy nation’s collective attention, even Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was forced to promise from Washington full inquiry into the matter.

“If I had done anything wrong, I would have resigned. To resign because people have chosen to deliberately misrepresent you or misperceive you means that you are giving more importance to other people’s perception than to your own character and your own integrity. I am not going to resign,” Tharoor told NDTV in a half-hour long interview.

Commenting for the first time since the controversy broke out two days ago, Manmohan Singh said in Washington that he was not aware of the facts of the case.

“I don’t have all the facts. When I go back, I will get the facts and will take action … if required,” he told journalists. “We can’t go by hearsay and media reports.”

The prime minister’s remarks came a day ahead of the resumption of the budget session of the Indian parliament where the opposition is determined to corner the government over the IPL controversy.

Tharoor asserted in his interview telecast live on the channel that the charges were motivated by political and business interests.

“In fact, the fact of the matter is I have done nothing wrong. I stand with my head held high,” he added.

Tharoor said that he will brief both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi on the matter.

Tharoor added that his involvement with the IPL team had nothing whatsoever to do with Sunanda Pushkar, who has a stake in the company that is a co-owner of IPL Kochi franchise, and with whom he has only been “recently close”.

On Wednesday, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) echoed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) demand that Tharoor be thrown out of the Manmohan Singh ministry.

The BJP went even further, asking for the prime minister to sack Tharoor, without waiting for evidence.

“Everything is now in the public domain. By abusing his ministerial position and authority, Tharoor ensured that his friend Sunanda Pushkar is richer by Rs.70-75 crore without investing anything,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

IPL commissioner Modi stuck to his position, saying there was a question mark over the ownership of Kerala team.

“Tharoor called me and asked me to keep the identity of Sunanda Pushkar under wraps. The conversation with Tharoor is minuted,” he said.

He also dismissed reports that he had offered money to the consortium to not bid for the Kerala team. “I never made a $50 million dollar bribe,” said Modi.

Earlier in the day, Pushkar also hit out at her critics and denied being a proxy to the minister. Breaking her silence, Pushkar told IANS: “My own business interests and assets are substantial, and efforts to besmirch Tharoor by presenting me as a proxy for him are personally insulting for me as a woman and as a friend.”

Pushkar said she had been contacted by Rendezvous Sports World, one of the consortium members of the Kochi IPL franchise, to take advantage of “my extensive international experience as a business executive, marketing manager and entrepreneur”.

“Because this is a start-up effort, I was told that in lieu of a salary they would grant me minor equity in Rendezvous in return for my efforts, a common practice across the world for… projects of this nature.”

Modi made an explosive revelation Sunday that Pushkar had got free equity in the Kerala franchise worth Rs.70 crore (around $15 million).

Tharoor, a former UN official who joined the Congress last year and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram, has been under the scanner ever since he became a minister.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said that the Directorate General of Investigation in Kochi had ordered a probe to ascertain if money had been channelled illegally into the Kochi IPL team from tax havens abroad.

Prisoner Runs away from Hospital, Negligent Cops Booked

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:48 AM PDT

Chandigarh, April 14 (IANS) Five police officials were booked for being negligent while on duty as a prisoner managed to flee from the hospital here Wednesday.

Paramjit Singh, who was caught with two kg heroin from the bus stand in Sector 43 in Oct 2007 by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), was awarded 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment by a local court March 13, 2010, police said.

Middle-aged Singh, who was a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab, was lodged in the Burail Model jail in Chandigarh.

“Condemning the court’s verdict, he sat on a hunger strike March 13. Seeing his deteriorating condition, police shifted him to the government hospital in Sector 32 March 18,” said J.S. Khaira, the deputy superintendent of police (south).

Singh continued his hunger strike and was on glucose drip, he added.

“However, when a nurse came to see him Wednesday, he left saying he was going to the toilet and fled from the hospital,” Khaira said.

“We have booked one head constable and four constables, deployed there to keep an eye on him, for negligence in their duty,” he added.

Lot Needs to be Done Before CWG, say Indian Shuttlers

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:33 AM PDT

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) India’s top badminton players Wednesday said a lot needs to be done before the Comonwealth Games to make the facilities at the newly constructed Siri Fort Complex at par with international standards.

Saina Nehwal and Jwala Gutta said the dusty warm-up area is one of the few points that needs immediate attention. Though both agreed that the stadium is turning out to be of world-class standards, there are areas that need to be improved.

“The warm-up area is dusty. It is difficult for us to do stretching there before the match with so much of dust. It can cause allergy,” said Saina.

“At the moment you cannot compare it with the facilities at Melbourne where the last Commonwealth Games were held. I think a lot need to be done before the Commonwealth Games.”

Jwala concurred, saying things could be more organised.

“No doubt it is a world class stadium. But the arrangements could have been done in more organised way,” she said.

Even international players complained about the dust and uneven drought of the air as the stadium is yet to be completed.

Saina, Kashyap Give India Reasons to Smile

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:31 AM PDT

New Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Saina Nehwal, Parupalli Kashyap and the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and V. Diju brought cheer for India on a disappointing first day of the main draw of Badminton Asian Championships here Wednesday.

Kashyap was the lone Indian challenge left in the men’s draw after six players tumbled out in the first two rounds of the competition.

“I have become much fitter now. I hope to continue this form in the tournament,” he said.

Saina then finished the Indian campaign of the day with an easy victory against Thailand’s Porntip Burnaprasertsuk 21-10, 21-13.

“I played quite well today. I did not expect to win so easily. In my previous meeting with her, I was stressed. But today I was more comfortable. My strokes have improved a lot and my defence was also good,” Saina said.

Saina now plays Indonesia’s Julia Pei Xian Wong, who took out Trupti Murgunde 21-17, 21-12 in the first round. Saina had beaten Julia in the 2006 Philippines Open final to win her first international tournament.

“I have played Julia before. She is coming back from a knee injury which kept her out of action for around 10 months. So, it will be a new match and I have to stay focussed.”

In other women’s singles, Sayali Gokhale played her heart out when she made a brave comeback against Singapore’s Beiwen Zhang but lost 11-21, 21-9, 18-21 in a marathon second round match. Neha Pandit lost to Malaysia’s Lydia Li Ya Cheah 14-21, 19-21 in women’s singles first round.

In the mixed doubles, top seeded Jwala and Diju sailed into second round with a 21-13, 21-12 victory over Wai Hong Wong and Hoi Wah Chau Hong kong.

Kashyap was perhaps the best among Indian men’s player on show as he got past two tough opponents. He beat Wing Ki Wong 21-14, 21-15 in the morning session before getting past Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiato 21-14, 21-16 in the second round. He will next play seventh seed Yun Hu of Hong Kong.

“These are good wins for me. I was shaky in my first match. But I recovered in time and started playing aggressively,” Kashyap, India’s highest ranked player in men’s singles at 30, said.

Among other men’s players, Anup Sridhar, Arvind Bhat and Anand Pawar lost in the second round while Ajay Jayram, Gurusaidatt and K. Nandgopal fell in the opening round.

Sridhar lost to Chong Chieh Lok of Malaysia 19-21, 15-21 while Pawar was beaten 11-21, 14-21 by Chinese Lin Dan. Bhat was shown the door by Korea’s Ji Hoon Hoong, who defeated him 21-18, 13-21, 21-6.

Top seed Taufik Hidayat, like his arch-rival Dan, made it to the third round without breaking much sweat.

Taufiq defeated Ha Anh le of Vietnam 21-10, 21-16 after going past qualifier Indra Mehata of Nepal in the first round.

Tiger Cubs Spread Joy at Aurangabad Zoo

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:29 AM PDT

Aurangabad, April 14 (IANS) An atmosphere of joy prevails in the Aurangabad Zoo as four cubs born to a Royal Bengal tigress are doing well in the neo-natal care period, a zoo official said.

“The cubs were born healthy and we ensured that the neo-natal care period also passes off well. Now, we plan to bring them out for public display by early June”, B. S. Naikwade, director of the Aurangabad Zoo, told IANS Wednesday.

The four cubs – one male and three females – were born March 6 and 8 respectively to an 11-year old Royal Bengal tigress Dipti and her mate Guddu, Naikwade said.

The cubs weighed around 1.5 kg at birth and are now a robust 4 kg each, he added.

“Four cubs born to a tigress at a time is considered rare and we are very happy with the development. We have sent a report on this to the Central Zoo Authority and the Maharashtra forest department,” an elated Naikwade told IANS.

So far, the cubs have not been named but the zoo plans to christen them in June when they emerge from the mother’s neo-natal care.

Dipti was presented to the Aurangabad Zoo by the Chatbir Zoo in Chandigarh in August 2006.

At present, the new arrivals have been completely kept off bounds, barring special visitors, in a separate enclosure to prevent disturbances and possibilities of any infections.

However, starting June the zoo plans to bring them out for an hour daily for the 1000-plus visitors and tourists who throng the 18-acre zoo in the Siddharth Garden area in the heart of the city.

The zoo has two pairs of Royal Bengal tigers, the four new cubs and seven white tigers as its chief attraction, besides several other wild animals.

The Aurangabad Zoo shot into limelight last July (2009), when tigress Rani escaped from her enclosure for over three hours after a wall collapsed following a storm that lashed the city.

IPL 4 with 10 teams, will begin in the 1st week of April, 2011

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:19 AM PDT

The fourth season of the expanded Indian Premier League (IPL), featuring 10 teams, will start in the first week of April after end of the World Cup, the league’s chief Lalit Modi said here Wednesday.

“We are going to start the 2011 IPL season a few days after the World Cup in the first week of April. We are going back to the schedule of April-May that we had in the 2008 first season. We will keep this (schedule) in future,” Modi told reporters here.

The fourth edition of the IPL will see the addition of two new cities – Pune and Kochi – and will also have 94 matches, a sharp increase of 34 matches.

During the event, Modi also announced the inaugural IPL awards function, which he called “Cricketainment” – a mix of cricket and Bollywood-style entertainment – and will take place April 23 here.

“The IPL awards function would be distinct from the ICC and BCCI awards functions. There would be 22 categories of awards with 10 of them to be adjudicated by a jury panel. IPL is also a mix of cricket and entertainment and so the awards ceremony will be Cricketainment. There would be eight other viewers’ category awards, three statistical awards and one IPL captains’ award,” Modi said.

A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader was Wednesday shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district while he was participating in a party demonstration against the women’s reservation bill, police said.

“Shukla was shot dead at point blank range. He died on the spot,” police inspector Bharat Yadav told reporters in Gonda, some 200 km from Lucknow.

“Though the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained, we have learnt that it could be a fallout of an old rivalry. Investigations are on to nab the culprit,” he added.
