| Newlyweds Shoaib-Sania arrive in Karachi Posted: 22 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT Karachi, April 22 (IANS) Carrying placards reading ‘Welcome to Pakistan’s daughter-in-law’, hundreds of fans gathered outside the Jinnah International Airport as newlyweds Shoaib Malik and Sania Mirza arrived here Thursday. The couple were welcomed by Sindh Sports Minister Mohammad Ali Shah and other government officials. ‘It feels great to have arrived here in Pakistan,’ Online news agency quoted Sania as saying on her first visit to this southern port city. Shoaib said the couple will stay in Pakistan for one week. They will fly to Islamabad, where they would be treated as state guests, to arrange Sania’s visa for Sialkot, Shoaib’s hometown, where a reception is planned for April 25. They are expected to meet top officials in Islamabad, including Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal. Sania’s mother is accompanying the couple. It is expected that the Indian guests will start arriving in Pakistan in the next day or two to attend the Valima reception. Another reception will be held in Lahore two days later, family sources said. Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is also expected to hold a reception in the couple’s honour later this month. | IIT-Delhi’s virtual lab to teach live experiments Posted: 22 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IIT-Delhi) has almost completed its pilot phase to roll out a virtual lab that can benefit thousands of students and professors across India learn difficult experiments in engineering and technology. ‘I am very keen for this development and the human resource development ministry is helping us achieve this goal,’ IIT-Delhi director Surendra Prasad said Thursday. The ‘virtual laboratory’ will bridge physical distance and availability of resources in far off places. Today it is possible to design good experiments among students for better learning, Prasad said. ‘The virtual lab pilot project is in its last leg. In a couple of months it will get over and we will reach the scaling up phase. We are satisfied so far and hope to achieve full success by imparting knowledge to many across our country,’ he added. He said the ministry has pegged a budget of Rs.80 crore ($18 million) for this scheme in the IIT system. The ministry is also providing a high bandwidth internet connection for its implementation. M. Balakrishnan, deputy director of the faculty, who is in charge of one such lab, said that several institutes across India have already tied up with IIT-Delhi. ‘The feedback is encouraging. While imparting laboratory learning through physical instruments may be limited, the software solutions can be of great use. The institutes can download a link and learn it at their own place,’ Balakrishnan told IANS. | Fonseka says he is victim of ‘unlawful detention’ Posted: 22 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT Colombo, April 22 (DPA) Sri Lanka’s former army commander General Sarath Fonseka, who was elected to parliament on an opposition ticket, said Thursday he was a victim of unlawful detention and called for safeguards in democracy. Fonseka, who is under military custody on allegations of conspiracy against the government and is facing two court martial trials, said at the inaugural session of parliament that it ’should ensure freedom from unlawful detention’. ‘Parliament should also ensure that democracy is safeguarded, human rights are protected and the freedom of movement is ensured,’ said Fonseka, who was elected as a candidate for the Marxist-backed Democratic National Alliance. ‘I have been subject to injustice,’ Fonseka said before being escorted back to detention at the navy headquarters. The ex-army chief was arrested Feb 8, less than two weeks after he unsuccessfully challenged President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the presidential elections. Earlier Thursday one of Rajapaksa’s brothers was selected as the new speaker of parliament, a day after official results confirmed a solid victory for the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). Chamal Rajapaksa, 67, the president’s older brother and a former minister of ports and aviation, was unanimously elected in the inaugural session. The president’s younger brother, Basil, his son Namal and cousin Nirupama Rajapaksa are also among the 144 UPFA parliamentarians in the 225-seat assembly. The elections were held April 8, but due to a re-poll in two districts following allegations of malpractices the final results were released only Wednesday. Rajapaksa’s UPFA obtained 60 percent of the vote while the main opposition United National Party (UNP) led by former prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe received only 29.3 percent. The UPFA is six members short of having a two thirds majority in the 150 seat parliament, but two UNP members have already announced their decision to support the government. Prabha Ganeshan and Palani Digambaram, from the Tamil ethnic minority said that they have decided to support the government because they had differences with the UNP. The cabinet of ministers are due to be sworn in Friday and President Rajapaksa has vowed to keep the Cabinet below 40 members. This was in contrast to the 58 members he had in the previous cabinet. The UPFA won by the biggest margin since 1977. The victory was largely seen as a vote of appreciation for Rajapaksa for ending the 26-year-old civil war against the rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). | Rs.3 lakh reward for clues to Delhi blast suspects Posted: 22 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT New Delhi, April 22 (IANS) Delhi Police Commissioner Y.S. Dadwal Thursday increased the reward amount from Rs.1 lakh to Rs.3 lakh for the arrest of three terror suspects wanted in the September 2008 serial blasts in the national capital. ‘The amount has been increased from Rs.100,000 to Rs.300,000 for a period of one year for any one who can give information or render any help leading to the arrest of three militants,’ a police officer said. The wanted terrorists have been identified are Mohammad Sajid, 20, Mirza Sadab Baig, 25, and Mohammad Khalid, 25. They all belong to Azamgarh in Uttar Padesh. The police said they are ‘dreaded terrorists’ and wanted in serial bomb blast incidents which occurred Sep 13, 2008, in Delhi. At least 25 people were killed and 100 injured in the five blasts. Super Kings will now face Mumbai Indian in Sunday’s final at the same venue. Bollinger picked up four for 13 as Deccan Chargers were bowled out for 104 runs in 19.2 overs with Andrew Symonds (23) as the top scorer. Chennai Super Kings spinners also did a great job as they dried up the runs at one end while Man of the Match Bollinger picked up the wickets at the D.Y. Sports Academy. Opting to bat first, Chennai Super Kings struggled to get 142 runs for seven in 20 overs. Subramaniam Badrinath made patient 41-ball 37 while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 30. | Crying babies at risk of brain damage Posted: 22 Apr 2010 12:00 PM PDT London, April 23 (IANS) Distressed babies who are left to cry are at greater risk of developing problems later in life, a childcare expert said. Long periods of crying can damage developing brains, leading to learning difficulties later in life, said Dr Penelope Leach, author of the 1977 book ‘Your Baby And Child: From Birth To Age Five’. ‘It is not an opinion but a fact that it’s potentially damaging to leave babies to cry,’ she said. Leach’s theory is contrary to popular child-rearing beliefs that a baby should be allowed to cry for up to 20 minutes. ‘A baby who is left crying for long enough will eventually stop, but not because he has learned to go to sleep happily alone, but because he is exhausted and has despaired of getting help,’ she said. She added continued crying led to the increased production of the ’stress hormone’ cortisol. Long periods of crying produced so much cortisol that it could damage a baby’s brain, reports telegraph.co.uk. ‘That doesn’t mean that a baby should never cry, or that parents should worry when she does. All babies cry, some more than others. It’s not the crying that is bad for babies – but crying that gets no response,’ Leach said. | High flying ‘Kites’ to release globally May 21 Posted: 22 Apr 2010 12:00 PM PDT Washington, April 23 (IANS) In what will be the widest ever release for any Indian Bollywood production, ‘Kites’, the eagerly-anticipated romantic adventure starring Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori, will open simultaneously in India, the US, Canada and other countries on May 21. The Rakesh Roshan production, directed by Anurag Basu, will be released by Reliance BIG Pictures (RBEL) on more than 2,000 screens simultaneously, including over 200 in the US, RBEL announced Thursday. Shot completely on location in Las Vegas, Sante Fe and Los Angeles, ‘Kites’ is a unique Bollywood film in a number of ways, not the least of which is the fact that a reworked English language version, designed to extend the reach of the original, will be launched in select engagements one week later. Entitled ‘Kites: The Remix’, it is being presented by Brett Ratner, who oversaw its creation. In the US, ‘Kites: The Remix’ will be released in association with Mark Urman’s Paladin, and will open in several major markets, including New York and Los Angeles, for the Memorial Day holiday weekend beginning May 28. | Germany slams Google for mapping wireless hotspots Posted: 22 Apr 2010 11:36 AM PDT Hamburg, April 22 (DPA) Google, which is already under fire in Germany, faced a fresh accusation Thursday from government officials of using its camera cars to search for apartment dwellers’ wireless hotspots. Johannes Caspar, privacy commissioner for the state of Hamburg, said it was illegal to gather the information. Encrypted WiFi networks or WLANs are often installed in homes to carry phone, radio and data traffic. Although the traffic is usually secure, the signals can leak out through walls onto streets and reveal the name of the WLAN and the MAC or serial number of the device. Google Germany said it had never been a secret that it was mapping WLANs and denied it was illegal, saying many companies already did this. ‘It’s not new, and we’re not the only ones doing it,’ said spokesman Kay Oberbeck. A government-funded science agency won a German innovation prize last year for inventing a navigation system that maps all of a city’s WLANs. The Fraunhofer Institute software then uses ordinary phones to guide pedestrians street by street through the city. Germany’s consumer affairs ministry immediately accused Google of a ‘dubious’ practice, demanding it immediately reveal what data it was collecting on Germans. ‘They have to lay all the cards on the table,’ said a ministerial spokesman. Caspar, who has the power to impose instant fines but must defend his actions in court, said he was especially concerned that Google collected the SSID or name adopted by each hotspot. Users often name hotspots after themselves, for example ‘The Schmidt Family.’ Overbeck said Google was not storing information to identify people. In the past year, both German and Swiss government officials have repeatedly called Google a ‘data octopus,’ objecting to it scanning library books, showing snippets from news websites and taking panorama photos of street frontages all over Europe. Fellow singer Sheryl Crow was crowned Trendy Traditionalist and while Molly Sims was honoured with the Top Model Turned Mogul title. Other names who will be honoured include ‘Glee’ star Mark Salling (Casual-Cool Hunk), Kelly Osbourne (Punk Princess) and actress Anna Kendrick (The New Showstopper), reported aceshowbiz.com ‘It’s an incredible honor!’ said Lopez. ‘When they told me, I was just like, ‘Really? While Victoria can take the flak that routinely comes her way, she still gets nervous before she shows off her new fashion creations. ‘With my fashion label I made a dream come true for myself. Now he is all set to perform live on the music launch of 'Raavan' on April 24 in Mumbai. Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai are in the lead role in the movie. The expert will enthrall the audiences on the event with some songs of 'Raavan' and also other songs from Mani Rathnam's earlier hits. Sources say that A R Rahman made special provision for the movie 'Raavan' to come to the city on the request of director as he wanted the time to be unforgettable. Allegations of the Tharoor's presence with the IPL have since become thick & fast but the Nationalist Congress Party to which Patel relates found to play down the debate. The NCP told “There is no controversy at all. The business plan that Poorna Patel sent to her father’s personal office is not classified information. Tharoor requested Patel, a friend for some help and he just sent that e-mail across. Poorna just works for the IPL and to say that a politician’s child cannot choose a profession of his or her choice is unfair. An e-mail being forwarded to someone for some help is no big deal.” The NCP orator too refused any misconduction and told the party would approve any agency to prove the relations. The orator told “Let us not politics sports. The IPL Governing Council is meeting on April 26 so let leave all decisions to the Council and all government agencies dealing with the probe.” As per to Economic Times, the mail was sent to Tharoor on 19th March, only 2 days earlier the bids for the 2 new IPL franchises were disclosed. Significantly, this mail was sent hardly 2 hours after Sundar Raman, IPL CEO forwarded the similar papers to Patel's papers to Poorna Patel. Raman revealed he had no estimation why the mail was forwarded to the office of Minister & refused alleges by Poorna that she had been inquired to disclose the mail out to her father. She said “Sundar had given me certain instructions and I was merely following that. Other than that I have no idea.” 2 days later Tharoor got the mail with the papers, the Kochi consortium bid an amazing price, outbidding two other opponents. Patel cleared that he was only attempting to assist Tharoor, who had requested for the information. He told to the newspaper “Shashi and I have been friends and he did ask me whether I could help him with some information in the capacity of a friend, since he was putting together a team from Kochi. I spoke to Lalit and told him that Shashi wanted some information. Beyond that, I don’t know what information has been passed. If I was a bidder, why would I help out a competitor with information?” Tharoor subsequently gave resignation from his post after IPL commissioner Lalit Modi revealed that Sunanda Pushkar had free equity stakes worth Rs. 75 crores in the Kochi franchise. Pushkar is in rumors to wed Tharoor this year and was claiming acting as a front for him. Patel & Tharoor Conversation in House Patel & Tharoor were on Thursday viewed having a long conversation in the Lok Sabha, on a day their claimed relation in the IPL bids for the Kochi team was reported by a newspaper. Around 3 pm, when the House was in huge controversy the Demand for Grants for the Rural Development Ministry, Patel and Tharoor walked in one after another. As Patel took a place in the back of the House on the reserves side, Tharoor rapidly went there and sat beside him. The 2 then initiated their conversation, unaware of the proceedings. They sat mutually for 15 minutes after which Patel went from the House. The progress highlighted two days after Patel valueless allegation of his role in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the newspaper report today told his personal secretary had sent a mail to Tharoor with paper consisting projections of new franchisee valuations in IPL.
