Guyana, May 1 (IANS) Mahela Jayawardene smashed 81 off 51 balls as Sri Lanka posted 135 for six against New Zealand in the opening match of the World Twenty20 here Friday.

Jayawardene guided Sri Lanka through a difficult phase after the islanders, electing to bat first, made a slow start before recovering in the final overs.

Dinesh Chandimal was the second best contributor with 29 runs off 23 balls with the help of one four and one six.

New Zealand bowlers made good use of the slow track, taking the pace off the ball and not allowing dangerous Sri Lankan opener Dilshan to get off to a good start.

Dilshan made just 3 off 19 balls before Jacob Oram rattled his stumps.

London, May 1 (IANS) It is just what women have been waiting for – a spray that makes men more sensitive.

Scientists say the nasal spray is capable of turning the most macho of hunks into a sensitive and lovable person who says all right things, reports express.co.uk.

The sensitivity spray uses oxytocin, known as the ‘cuddle hormone’. The feelgood chemical is a natural ‘love drug’ released in the brain during sex and stimulates affectionate feelings in humans.

In experiments, 24 healthy men took nasal sprays containing oxytocin and Rene Hurlemann who carried out the research in Germany said: ‘The oxytocin group showed significantly higher emotional empathy levels.’

‘Housefull’ evokes smiles, giggles aplenty (Hindi Film Review, Rating: ***)

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 12:36 PM PDT

Film: ‘Housefull’; Starring: Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Rampal, Lara Dutta, Jiah Khan, Riteish Deshmukh; Directed by: Sajid Khan; Rating: ***

This is a sly tongue firmly and stubbornly in cheek, slick and chic comedy about a loser, or a panauti – a word that recurs ad nauseum in this glorious gasbag of giggles, winks, nudges and innuendos packaged with such polished panache that you don’t really care what the inter-relations in the parodic plot finally signify.

Maybe they signify nothing more than a numbing but pleasantly diverting nothingness. But who the heck cares, as long as the tumble of confusions generates a hilarious havoc.

‘Housefull’, as the title suggests, is chockful of characters who bump into one another and into hard surfaces (including the unresolved edges in the plot) without injury. It’s all done in ricocheting rhythms of laughter that rises from the pit of the plot’s belly and moves upwards towards us, sometimes missing its target.

More than the screenplay (Milap Zaveri, Sajid Khan, Vibha Singh) which moves helter-skelter in every direction away from the centre of the plot and just about succeeds in coming to a reasonably coherent conclusion, it is the bevy of characters who are positioned in the screenplay with a supreme sense of pyramidal aptness.

Every actor shines because he or she knows the idea is to have fun and to transmit that fun to the audience. It’s the actors’ responsibility to make the maze of inter-relations hold together. They succeed.

Yes, sometimes the actors seem to enjoy the comedy of energetic error more than we do. Beyond a point how many slap-happy slipping-on-the-floor nudge-nudge-wink-wink oops-we-did-it-again rolling of the eyes biting-of-the-tongue jokes can we take??

But somehow it all holds together. Like a jigsaw done in the pages of a comic book and then put on celluloid, ‘Housefull’ evokes smiles and chuckles in cramped and wide-open spaces.

There is a casino in London where our loser-hero is beckoned to stem losses, a casino waitress (Lara Dutta) whose traditional Gujarati father (Boman Irani, as confidently spontaneous as ever) has disowned her for eloping with a man of her choice, a stern government agent (Arjun Rampal, the only actor who doesn’t get to smile in this chirpy

chuckle-fest), a sexy widow (Lilette Dubey) and assorted characters who come and go in a whoosh of wacky misunderstandings, confused identity and half-resolved comic snarls.

Sajid Khan’s earlier film ‘Heyy Babyy’ was a minty mix of mirth and maudlinism. ‘Housefull’ is a full-on flamboyant farce. Strangely there’s a subtlety even tenderness at times, in the way Sajid Khan handles the satirical material centred on the theme of a loser who brings bad luck on himself so often that he begins to wonder if there’s a method to the madness of his destiny.

Unlike most situational comedies ‘Housefull’ chooses the lower octaves of storytelling. The scale is pitched down. Even when the characters scream their lungs out we don’t wince in discomfort. This is the most well-behaved comedy in recent times with an array of pert but low-key performances.

Stripped of all buffoonery Akshay Kumar does his most delicately balanced comic act ever. There’s a mellow maturity to the way he balances farce with a more underplayed style of comedy. Riteish Deshmukh provides Akshay with the right cues. So do the rest of the actors. Among the three glamorous and sexy ladies Lara Dutta has the best comic

timing. Mention must be made of Chunky Pandey who brings the roof down with his Italian-Punjabi accent and burlesque.

‘Housefull’ looks and feels right. The climax in ‘Buckingham Palace’ (replete with Queen

Elizabeth and Prince Charles look-alikes) depends too closely on a literal outflow of laughter gas. But that’s okay. Delicacy of comic presentation is not a claim that ‘Housefull’ makes. But moments of muffled tenderness just happen in the plot’s confounded journey of a loser from no-love to know-love.

Worth watching for its mix of the wacky and the more tender variety of laughter.

On the contrary her publicist Cheryl Maisel has not released any immediate comment. Sandra Bullock is also expected to go for Warren Easton Charter School Foundation's ribbon cutting for the opening of their health clinic.

After disastrous Hurricane Katrina, she contributed generously to the school for upgrading and ascertaining a scholarship fund.

Congress seeks ‘adjustment’ with Trinamool for Kolkata civic polls

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 11:04 AM PDT

New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Senior Congress leader and party in-charge of West Bengal K. Keshav Rao met Trinamool Congress chief and Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee here Friday to seek seat-sharing ‘adjustment’ between the two parties ahead of next month’s Kolkata civic body elections.

‘I conveyed to her what the party wants. There is need for adjustment,’ Rao told reporters.

Trinamool Congress, the dominant opposition party in the state, has offered the Congress 25 of the 141 seats in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, much below the 51 the Congress had demanded. Party party leaders in West Bengal have conveyed their resentment to the central leadership over this.

The Trinamool Congress Wednesday announced candidates for 116 seats in the corporation.

Rao said his meeting with Banerjee was also about some pending rail projects in Andhra Pradesh.

He said the seat adjustment talks will be held by the local Congress units in consultation with the state leadership, and the Congress central leadership will not interfere. ‘My advice to PCC (Pradesh Congress committee) is to see that the jot (combination with Trinamool Congress) runs smoothly,’ he said.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation will go to the polls along with 80 other municipalities in the state May 30. The seat sharing is expected to have a bearing on the understanding between two parties for other municipalities.

Movie Review: Brendan Fraser Brings Up A Comedy Again in ‘Furry Vengeance’

Furry Vengeance Movie poster

Furry Vengeance Movie poster

A veteran actor Brendan Fraser has done all whatever is expected from him whether it is serious drama in Gods and Monsters, epic blockbusters like The Mummy or his signature style in comedies like Bedazzled or Encino Man.

Now with ‘Furry Vengeance‘ Brendan has turned eco-conscious. With such an environment conscious family comedy “Furry Vengeance,” a loveable and attractive star has got the opportunity to show his versatility in acting. In various sequences of "Furry Vengeance” Brendan makes audiences laugh and think simultaneously.

Dan Sanders (Brendan Fraser) a real estate developer who on the commands of his boss is wrecking the forest land to make a room for so-called environment friendly people. Dan faces all the aggression of forest animals as he is the one from whose shoulder ken Jogg (Dan's Boss) is hitting at them.

For their rescue from Dan and his Boss, animals plans out strategies to save themselves. They built their own conservation group and collect their assets like acorns, stones, and a startling dexterity for hot-wiring cars to allow a run riot with Animal Planet fury on Dan. He gets wretched with brute. He gets captured in a car by a cunning raccoon. He even got stuck in his pants down in a handy lavatory that gets hanged into a tree by a furious bear.

Furry Vengeance

Furry Vengeance

To be honest, Brendan who vigorously ambushes his way through the never ending forest show is best in every way but what makes the movie bit lull is the script which sometimes appears to be slow and lazy at times.

Brendan had done justice to his role but Furry's unfunny script failed to carry his endeavors, animated animals looked so unreal made the talent waste.

Dan's wife played by Brooke Shields has nothing to do in the movie and whenever she was expected to do some she didn't manage to give right expressions at the right time. Even the requisite gaffe roll towards the end is raw in its desperation to produce any laughter.

“Furry Vengeance” may perhaps instruct viewers that it requires action trather than just speaking in favor of environment. But this has already been attempted in movies like “Over the Hedge” and “Hoot.” With this Brendan has added another remarkable performance in his personal account but as far as movie is concerned it lacks in overall contentment.
