India vs Afghanistan Live Cricket Score: Ind won the toss and Bowling first

Posted: 01 May 2010 06:41 AM PDT

In the Twenty20 World Cup 2010, today there is the 3rd live match of Group "C" between India vs. Afghanistan at 09:30 local (13:30 GMT. Watch the match live and know today survival team.

Afghanistani Team: Afghanistan records their debut on Saturday’s morning show in T20 World Cup 2010, a new performer that unexpectedly became a smash hit by defying every play deputed for them. A war-suffering team, dysfunctional nation, with half players born in the immigrant camps, they unfortunately missed qualifying for World Cup 2007 but are setting up their mind for it with this tournament. They have astonished several Associate teams during their surprising rise from Division Five to a world happening. Still, they will know that what they are going to face – the pace-man Zaheer Khan, the spin-man Harbhajan Singh, the mighty-man of MS Dhoni & Yuvraj Singh – is none like anything they have struggled so far.

Indian Team: India well knows Afghanistan team is not alike Bangladesh. They have not played a preparation match this time, know little about their rivals and will desire to be as attentive as against their other team-mates, South Africa. On the other hand, they would like this gradual change from the IPL to high-stage international cricket. A victory against Afghanistan, no issue what the edges, will more or less certain them a place in the upcoming round. How the tournament would love an upset, though.

The mere dampener is the perfect timing of the match. Almost all Indian cricket matches of this tournament will start at 9.30am & 7pm in India – as against to the common evening timings for matches played in the West Indies. Obviously, TV audience gets a preference to the islands hosting the T20 World Cup 2010, mere 3 years later a terribly organized World Cup.

Team Reports: Twenty20 World Cup is not the exact place & time where you research, not even against Afghanistan. They might not have had a warm-up cricket-match, but don’t anticipate Indian to research too much, for this is an essential game.

Now, let us see whether India or Afghanistan will win the match in the T20 World Cup 2010 and start their win career graph from today.

India Players (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 M Vijay, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Ravindra Jadeja/Yusuf Pathan, 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Praveen Kumar/R Vinay Kumar, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Ashish Nehra

‘Merge Marathi-speaking areas of Belgaum with Maharashtra’

Posted: 01 May 2010 11:34 AM PDT

Mumbai, May 1 (IANS) Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray Saturday said Marathi-speaking areas of Belgaum in Karnataka should be merged with Maharashtra to ‘complete’ the state.

‘Maharashtra will not be a complete state unless Marathi speaking regions of Belgaum district of Karnataka are included in the state,’ he said during a brief address to the public that had gathered to celebrate Maharashtra Day at the Bandra-Kurla Complex in suburban Bandra.

Thackeray also asserted that Marathi should be promoted as a language of communication.

‘Although we call Hindi the national language, I feel it is only an official language of communication. Marathi should not be ignored and should be given equal importance,’ he said.

Thackeray mentioned how the Sena had always fought for the cause of the Marathi ‘manoos’ (common man) and that their interests will always be on the top of the party’s priority list.

Thackeray felicitated veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar, who sang patriotic songs at the event.

Thackeray also released his son Uddhav’s book, a compilation of aerial photographs of Maharashtra.

It is after nearly two years that Thackeray had made public appearances and addresses on two consecutive days.

Terror alert holds back weekend shoppers in Delhi

Posted: 01 May 2010 11:24 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 1 (IANS) Many shopping hubs in the national capital, usually thronged by weekend shoppers, were Saturday less crowded in the wake of a terror alert by the US and three other countries.

Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi wore a near deserted look in the evening as was the case in with other shopping centres like Karol Bagh, Sarojini Nagar and Greater Kailash.

‘It is relatively less (crowed than) what we usually see on weekends,’ said Uttam Kumar who had come to the Lajpat Nagar market with his family.

The city is on high alert following an advisory from the US Saturday warning its citizens of ‘increased indications’ of terrorists planning ‘imminent attacks’ in Delhi. This is the third such US advisory and was immediately followed by Australia, Britain and Canada.

The drop in market footfalls came even as Delhi Police and the home ministry said there was nothing to panic about as the security agencies were geared to thwart any threat.

Ashok Randhawa, a member of the Sarojini Nagar Market Association, told IANS that there was a noticeable fall in the number of customers after the media, particularly TV channels, ‘played up the terror threat’.

‘Hundreds of policemen have been deployed here. People, I think, may be scared to visit crowded places. There is a noticeable fall in the number of customers in comparison to a normal weekend,’ Randhawa said.

Khan Market in central Delhi also had a high police presence, Sanjiv Mehra, the president of the market association said.

‘Delhi Police gave us an advisory and have asked us to be on high alert. There is a mark difference between usual weekend crowd and what we witnessed today,’ Mehra said.

However, Anil Gupta, the president of the Paharganj Market Association, said that he was not aware of any such alert.

‘We have no idea about any terror threat in the city,’ Gupta said, adding the market was as usual bustling with foreigners.

Metro trains were, however, running to their full capacity.

Jharkhand political crisis continues, Soren to stay till Tuesday

Posted: 01 May 2010 11:08 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 1 (IANS) The political uncertainty in Jharkhand continued for the fourth day Saturday as a meeting between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ended in a stalemate but it was decided that Shibu Soren will remain the chief minister till Tuesday.

‘Nothing has been decided. The discussion will go on. It will take (some) time,’ senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told IANS.

But sources privy to the meeting said the BJP has postponed its final decision till Tuesday and allowed Soren to continue as the chief minister till then.

Hemant Soren, a JMM leader and the chief minister’s son, skipped the meeting called by BJP president Nitin Gadkari.

The BJP had called its Jharkhand unit leaders and allies to New Delhi for consultations on government formation.

The state plunged into a political crisis after the BJP threatened to withdraw support to the Soren government as he voted in favour of the Congress-led government in parliament Tuesday to defeat BJP-sponsored cut motions.

But after the JMM apologized publicly for the mistake, the BJP put on hold its withdrawal of support. The JMM has said it was ready to prop up a BJP-led coalition government.

However, the JMM appears divided on whether to stay with the BJP or ally with the Congress.

JMM legislator Teklal Mahto, who accompanied Shibu Soren to New Delhi, said he was going to meet United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

On Friday, the BJP had said it will not withdraw support from the Soren-led government till it consults with other alliance partners in the state.

The JMM-BJP coalition government was formed in December. In the 82-member assembly, JMM and BJP have 18 members each and are supported by All Jharkahnd Students Union’s five legislators and Janata Dal-United’s two.

May Day: US Demonstrating Against Immigration law

Posted: 01 May 2010 05:06 AM PDT

US in the occasion of May Day today have organized rallies against new immigration laws in Arizona. New laws that have come up have created much of outcry cause of difficulties people are facing.

Protests are intended in more than 70 cities in order to cancel of the contentious Arizona legislation as well as to review immigration alteration at a federal level.

Organizer Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association, said the Arizona law “only gives working people, immigrants, youth, women, trade unionists and their sympathizers more reason to march.”

The rallies were being held “not only to decry the horrible legislative act in Arizona, but to demand a fair and humane immigration reform by this Democratic administration in 2010,” Lopez added.

Business city Los Angeles is projected to host the largest of the protests with approximate 100,000 people may turn up as police is saying. Same figures were seen in 2006.

According to the law in Arizona it is a crime if one lacks papers at the time of immigration and authorizes police to check whether the person is leaving country illegally.

Some of Civil rights activists think that these laws may lead to racial discrimination while state officials underlined that the bill clearly prohibit law enforcement officers from preventing someone just because of their culture.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer stated the law that has engrossed wide national brace requires to be guarded by the state’s fragile border.

In Phoenix on Thursday, the phrasing of the law was twisted by legislators in an attempt Brewer said was provoked to make it “crystal clear” that racial prejudices was not legal.

A passage, containing phrase "solely" was demanded to be removed from the clause.

“These changes specifically answer legal questions raised by some who expressed fears that the original law would somehow allow or lead to racial profiling,” Brewer said in a statement.

“These new amendments make it crystal clear and undeniable that racial profiling is illegal and will not be tolerated in Arizona.”

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined the demonstrations on Thursday, calling the law "unpatriotic and un-American" highlighting the quote in other cities including San Francisco.

“While we recognize that we must enact 21st century legislation to secure our borders and ensure the safety of all our citizens, the law signed by the governor of Arizona simply does not do this,” Villaraigosa said. “The Arizona law is not only misguided, it is unpatriotic and unconstitutional.”

San Francisco city attorney Dennis Herrera and supervisor David Campos said the law was a “a direct threat to the fundamental rights of many MLB players and fans, and an affront to millions of Americans who are — or who may appear to be — of foreign heritage.”

The Major League Baseball Players Association meanwhile said Arizona’s legislation could have a “negative impact on hundreds of Major League players who are citizens of countries other than the United States.”

Gujarat celebrates golden jubilee (Second lead, changing dateline)

Posted: 01 May 2010 10:08 AM PDT

Ahmedabad, May 1 (IANS) Gujarat Governor Kamla Beniwal Saturday formally kicked off the state’s golden jubilee celebrations in Ahmedabad with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national leadership in attendance and the opposition Congress staying away.

Beniwal launched the celebrations at a glitzy function organised at the Sardar Patel Stadium here Saturday night.

The formal inauguration of the celebrations followed a function in capital Gandhinagar during the day at which the foundation stone of a Mahatma Mandir here was laid by Chief Minister Narender Modi.

The governor’s programme and Modi’s function were boycotted by the Congress.

The party organised a rally in Gandhinagar, just two km from the place where Modi laid the foundation stone of the Mahatma Mandir. A a galaxy of Congress leaders attended the rally.

Beniwal while formally launching the golden jubilee celebrations said: ‘I facilitate the industrious people of the state on this happy occasion and hope they win more laurels for the state and the country.’

Modi then took the audience on a soulful journey through the half-century existence of the state and hoped that the next 50 years would see it break all previous records in terms of achievements.

‘Let every Gujarati contribute 100 hours and do 50 good deeds for the state in this golden jubilee year as a commitment,’ he added.

Former deputy prime minister and MP from Gandhinagar L.K. Advani recounted his journey from Sindh following partition to life in Kutch and praised Modi for the development in the state.

While the state pulled out all stops to make the inaugural function and the cultural programme a success, chaos prevailed due to over-crowding at the venue.

Many senior bureaucrats and guests carrying invitation cards allegedly faced police high-handedness and had to go back without attending the function. Some reporters were also turned back.

Earlier in the morning, Modi launched the celebrations by laying the foundation stone of the Mahatma Mandir.

Modi, accompanied by Advani, laid the foundation stone of the Mahatma Mandir, to be built here at an estimated cost of Rs.100 crore.

‘This edifice will reflect (Mahatma) Gandhi’s life and philosophy on the one hand and the prosperity of Gujarat on the other,’ Modi said at a function to mark the commencement of the project.

‘Work on the project is beginning right away and the first phase will be completed this day a year later,’ Modi said.

The Mahatma Mandir, spread over 34 acres, will have a business centre, exhibition halls, a memorial and a garden on Gandhi and a suspension bridge in memory of the Dandi march. The piers of the suspension bridge will have windmills.

The memorial is designed in the form of a salt mound since the salt satyagraha (movement) was an important milestone in the country’s freedom struggle. The memorial will house a meditation hall and a museum.

The Gandhi garden will have life-sized sculptures of Mahatma Gandhi.

Addressing the Congress rally, state party chief Siddharth Patel said: ‘The founding fathers of the state enshrined the values of simplicity in celebrations and service before self in conduct while laying the foundations of the state and we intend to adhere to this.’

Leader of Opposition in the assembly Shaktisinh Gohil said that the Congress, which was all for joining in the official celebrations, was forced to disassociate itself from it when Modi sought to turn a state function into the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s affair.

‘The progress and development of Gujarat has been because of the progressive, far-sighted and development-oriented approach of its people and no single individual can take credit for it all,’ Gohil added.

Ahmed Patel, political advisor to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, said the state’s Congress chief ministers had laid a solid foundation for its growth.

The function, which marked the culmination of its Gujarat ‘gaurav yatras’ taken out from various parts of the state, was attended by all three members of the union cabinet from the state – Dinsha Patel, Bharat Solanki and Tushar Chaudhary.

Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat also attended the function.

Former Gujarat chief ministers Madhavsinh Solanki, Shankersinh Vaghela and Dilip Parikh were also present.

Easy victory for India, Afghanistan show promise

Posted: 01 May 2010 10:08 AM PDT

Gros Islet (St Lucia), May 1 (IANS) India galloped to a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in their Group C World Twenty20 opener but not before the team from the war-ravaged nation showed promise as if it belonged to the top league.

Chasing a winning target of of 116 runs, India made it in 14.5 overs with Murali Vijay (48) and Yuvraj Singh (23 not out) doing the bulk of the scoring. Skipper Mahendra singh Dhoni (15) struck two sixes to finish the match in a jiffy.

Minnows Afghanistan showed courage to stand up to cricketing giants India. Afghanistan have been the talk of this tournament as in only two years, they have risen from Division Five of the World Cricket League to the elite 12-nation World Twenty20. They just missed out on qualifying for the 2011 ODI World Cup but have earned the full one-day international status.

The Afghan players have picked up most of their cricketing skills at refugee camps and managed to put together a team with the bare minimum and not even a stadium in their country.

So when the tall and sturdy Afghans took the field in blue and red-bodered jerseys, almost similar to India’s, they gave their best and ensured they matched up to their rivals in cricketing skills as well.

Put in, Afghanistan lost wickets early and were reduced to 29 for three before opener Noor Ali (50 off 48 balls) and Asghar Stanikzai (30 off 33 balls) pulled them out of trouble. Ali and Stanikzai shared 68 runs, but both were dismissed on the same score of 97 and Afghanistan then lost five wickets for just 17 runs.

Ali played good cricketing shots and showed temparament to work the ball around on the slow track.

Stanikzai demonstrated power as he struck three sixes, all in the deep mid-wicket region, incuding a towering one off Harbhajan Singh.

But after their dismissal, Afghanistan lost wickets in heaps as the batsmen played attacking shots but were done in by the short deliveries. Ashish Nehra took three wickets giving away 19 runs.

Afghanistan were impressive in both bowling and fielding. Left arm speedster Shapoor Zadran worked up a good pace.

Riht-arm medium fast Dawalat Ahmadzai got the wicket of Gautam Gambhir with Mohammad Nabi taking a fine catch at cover point.

Vijay, who had a fine run in the IPL and was included in the squad as a replacement for the injured Virender Sehwag, timed the ball well, hitting three sixes and two fours.

Leg spinner Samiullah Shenwari then took the wicket of Suresh Raina trapped lbw.

Medium pacer Hamid Hassin was the pick of the bowlers, dismissing Vijay and giving away just eight runs in three overs.

Afghanistan’s bowlers made good use of slow nature of the turf and did manage to tie down the Indian batsmen in the middle overs.

After Vijay’s dismissal, skipper Dhoni was in no mood to prolong their outing and struck Nowroz Mangal for two sixes to romp home.

Movie Review: A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Cast: Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Jackie Earle Haley and Kellan Lutz, Director: Samuel Bayer, Rating: 1 on 4

A Nightmare on Elm Street Review: A remake of 1984 American slasher "A Nightmare on Elm Street" got released on April 30. Film follows the accounts of 1984 horrors with latest updates.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street"  cannot be tagged as a terrible movie just because it is a remake. It is good effort movie with appropriate amount of thrills and horror sequences.

Outstanding performance by Jackie Earle Haley got movie some praises he plays 'Freddie' in the movie and displays terrifically the stubbornness that 'Freddie' the character has.

"A Nightmare on Elm Street"  can be overviewed in two dimensions one can be its bizarrely "straight" with very less or rather no humor and second, the realism in its dream sequence.

Lack of humor stings if one remembers the original part where bathtub sequence is still in memories of viewers.

The other major point to be noted is the "severe" tone of Freddie is now dormant child abuser rather a serial killer of them. In today's time when these issues related with children are matter of concern really give a movie an interested turn.

Let's see how good it can be in viewers' choice than the previous.

Barbara does struggle to form the words in her mind. She lets her voice express all the emotions that her restricted language lets her disclose. She said "I am so excited about Kites. It is my first English film, my first Bollywood film and my first action film. It is also my first big budget movie."

It is also first film with . When she met Rakesh Roshan, he said 'ok, you're gonna star opposite this guy'.

She said "Now, I know that we look very good together. It has been an amazing experience in my career. He is a great actor, the best co-star, and a great human being. It has been enjoyable and fun. But if you ask me about first impressions … the first time I saw him was in Jodhaa Akbar. And I didn't like him. The first thought that came to my mind was, 'Oh my God, he is such a tough guy, is he going to act like this in Kites? All tough and male?' and I didn't like him at all. And then, I did a bit of research.

I saw Lakshya – I liked it, and then I saw Koi Mil Gaya and I loooved it. And I realized he was a versatile actor. Mayawati expels 500 BSP workers with criminal past

Lucknow, May 1 (IANS) Cracking the whip on party workers with criminal backgrounds, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Saturday ordered the expulsion of around 500 party activists, sources said.

Significantly, the cleansing operation exempted legislators, MPs or prominent party leaders facing criminal charges, the sources added.

‘The majority of those suspended are ordinary-level party workers,’ a BSO office bearer told IANS, requesting anonymity.

‘The activists who have been shown the door include Mukhtar Ansari and Afzal Ansari. Both of them have already been expelled from the party,’ he added.

Mayawati April 16 had expelled the Ansari brothers for their alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Afzal and Mukhtar are in jail in connection with the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Krishnanand Rai, who was gunned down in a broad daylight ambush near Allahabad in November 2005.

The decision to expel around 500 party activists was taken by Mayawati late Saturday evening during a meeting with BSP office bearers.

Meanwhile, BSP opponents have termed the cleansing operation merely ‘an eyewash to win the confidence of the people’.

‘The point to be noted is that the action has been taken against ordinary workers. She (Mayawati) just cannot afford to take action against MLAs or MPs as it would disintegrate her party,’ state BJP spokesperson H.N. Dixit told reporters here.

Echoing similar views, Congress’ state spokesperson Alkhilesh Pratap Singh said: ‘It’s just drama…Mayawati just cannot eliminate senior members, ministers and MLAs facing criminal charges because she knows very well that the move will break the party and she would not be able to rule the state.’
