Posted: 03 May 2010 12:05 PM PDT

The Nashville flood kept on creating a havoc due to flooding of the region. The overflowing of the Cumberland River has caused Nashville to shut down most of its shops and forced the guests out of the hotel including the Opryland Hotel. The schools and colleges had to also be shut down due to the Nashville flooding.

Karl Dean, Nashville's Mayor advised the residents to conserve water as much as they could as the city's treatment plants had to also be closed down due to a heavy rainfall. Tennessee had to face tough news as eight of its residents died including one death occurring due to the tornado. Some victims were still stuck in their vehicles and many were swept away by the flooding, one of the worst in the decade.

Nashville is not the only place in Tennessee coping with flooding in the aftermath of record rainfall over the weekend.  Residents of Clarksville TN which is downriver from Nashville now have new flood related woes to deal with as the Cumberland river is already 7 feet above flood level and rising.

Its not just the Nashville region which has to suffer due to the flooding. Even the Clarksville TN region residents had to face the ire of the Cumberland river over flooding 7 feet above the flood level. The main street river in Clarksville has also been closed.

West Indies vs England

West Indies vs England

In the ICC T20 World Cup 2010, there is the 8th match of Group D between West Indies vs. England at 13:30 (17:30 GMT) at Providence. West Indies has already won single match and England today will start the first game of T20 Cricket.

West Indies defeated Ireland easily in their first match and but need to play defensively against England. Ottis Gibson will have sufficient information of English team & has Captain Chris Gayle back from damage to execute every tricky plan he makes.

At the Providence, the spinners will play a major role & how the West Indies batsmen tackle with England’s spinners could prove vital. Against Ireland they were most times uncomfortable by George Dockrell, 17-year-left-arm-spinner, so Graeme Swann & Michael Yardy should observe confident.

England will be examining out still another starting partnership in T20 cricket and with Craig Kieswetter & Michael Lumb they observe they have at last stumbled on a grouping strong enough to boss the early overs. Silently England has developed a competitive limited-overs side that, with Eoin Morgan there to end an innings, looks to have its entire basis enclosed.

Team information: West Indies anticipate to greet their captain after he overlooked the Ireland game with a inflexible buttock, signifies Andre Fletcher or Narsingh Deonarine will sit ouside from the team that defeat Ireland. Sulieman Benn rests uncertain with his shoulder damage as does Jerome Taylor.

In today's match, let us see whether the home team West Indies takes over England or not in ICC T20 World Cup 2010?

In his defence, Kasab insisted that the terrorist caught on CCTV is not him but a lookalike and rubbished all witness testimonies.

A $3 Billion Deal To Strike In between Continental & United Airlines

United and Continental Airlines declared on Monday they’re outlining the world’s biggest airline in a deal worth about $3 billion.

The upcoming airline would hop Delta Air Lines in dimension and will schedule flights from Shanghai to South America. The aircrafts will display logo of Continental and will bear the name of United.

After two years of chairmanship of United CEO Glenn Tilton, Continental CEO Jeffery Smisek will take over.

The deal will at first require sanction from stakeholders and regulators and is likely to seal in the fourth quarter.

The United Continental Holdings Inc. will remain as a parent company.it is also expected that this venture will generate revenue of about $29 billion, and $7.4 billion in unhindered cash.

The companies claim that their amalgamation will save them $1 billion to $1.2 billion annually by 2013. That comprises $800 million and $900 million of new annual revenue generated from improved international service.

United will hold 55 % of the shares of the newly formed company, with rest share in the lap of Continental Airlines shareholders.

~ Rest Continues Below ~

Continental and United will lie on top on 13 continuous routes out of them one or two will be carriers. The deal anticipates 75% to get approval albeit regulators want to see competition to get the fares down.

This amalgamation will allow U.S. to see three giant airlines. United is the U.S.'s third-largest carrier by traffic whereas Continental Airlines is fourth biggest.

A further major subject will be incorporating the pilot staff. One of the officials who spoke about the deal said pilots have been briefed. They will serve on a joint contract and will be represented by the Air Line Pilots Association.

On Friday the market capitalization for both UAL Corp. and Continental was $3.62 billion and $3.12 billion respectively.

Darryl Jenkins, said on the United-Continental amalgamation that they would be the leading carrier in U.S. markets, comprising New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston. It would tear Chicago with American and abandon Atlanta to Delta.

Jenkins added the new United would exceed Delta in drawing esteemed corporate commuters, who assess suitable schedules to destinations they required to go.

“Now we’ve got a company that can really clearly compete against Delta,” Jenkins said. “Mergers are all about revenue, and this is a tremendous boost for revenue.”

Airline analyst Vaughn Cordle agreed that Smisek is a fine selection to direct the joint carrier.

“He’s on top of the world’s largest airline, and has a chance to return to profitability,” Cordle said. “That’s not a bad thing to do.”

Guwahati, May 3 (IANS) Terror mastermind and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) leader Ranjan Daimary Monday confessed that the Oct 30 serial explosions in Assam that killed 100 people and wounded around 800 were carried out under his express instructions.

The 50-year-old terrorist made this sensational revelation before police interrogators during intense grilling at the Assam Police Special Branch Headquarters here.

‘I never thought the magnitude of the bombings would be so devastating. I regret and repent now for that horrific wave of bombings,’ Daimary told police interrogators 48 hours after his arrest.

The NDFB chairman was arrested Saturday after he was handed over by Bangladesh to Indian Border Security Force (BSF) officials at the Dawki border post in Meghalaya.

Daimary was Sunday sent to 12 days in police remand by the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Guwahati.

‘We triggered the blasts to make our presence felt and to show our strength to the central government,’ Daimary said.

The NDFB leader said they never thought their plan of triggering nine near simultaneous explosions would materialise.

‘It was because of inefficiency on the part of the police that we succeeded in our plans,’ Daimary said.

Nine serial explosions rocked Assam Oct 30, 2008 – three each in Guwahati and Kokrajhar, two on Barpeta Road and one in Bongaigaon.

The planning for the serial explosions were hatched in Bangladesh in July 2008 and some trusted cadres were sent to all the blast sites to carry out a field study before executing the plan.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that probed the serial bombings named Daimary and 18 other NDFB militants as the main accused in the bombings.

United, Continental merger to form world’s biggest airline

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:16 AM PDT

Washington, May 3 (IANS) America’s two major airliners, United Airlines and Continental Airlines, Monday announced a merger deal worth $3.2 billion to create the world’s largest airline.

The combined company, which will fly under the United moniker and Continental logo, is now larger than Delta Air Lines, which became the country’s largest airline when it merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008.

It is expected to serve more than 144 million passengers per year and fly to 370 destinations in 59 countries. Continental already has several direct flights to India.

‘Combining these two companies is the best way to position ourselves … to thrive in the changing and competitive airline,’ said Jeff Smisek, chief executive of Continental, in a press conference with Glenn Tilton, chief executive of UAL Corp in New York.

‘Continental is strong where United is weak; United is strong where Continental is weak. Putting these two carriers together is a match made in heaven,’ he was quoted as saying by CNN.

As a result of the merger, the companies expect to have annual revenues of $29 billion and save between $1 billion and $1.2 billion over the next three years.

United and Continental discussed combining in 2008 and Houston-based Continental backed out, CNN reported. United boasts a stronger financial position this time around though.

Last week, the Chicago-based company reported a first quarter loss of $82 million, much narrower than the $382 million loss posted a year earlier. And revenue jumped 15 percent to $4.2 billion.

Thanks to an improved financial performance, United was expected to have more weight in the talks. Last weekend, the company pushed to base the deal on the closing price of its shares the day before an agreement is signed.

Assuming the deal clears anti-trust hurdles, the combined airline would be based in Chicago and use the United name but would be run by Continental chief executive Jeff Smisek, a source cited by CNN said.

Murdered Delhi scribe’s mother arrested, family under suspicion

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:14 AM PDT

Ranchi/New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) The mother of Nirupama Pathak, a Delhi journalist, was arrested Monday for allegedly being linked to her murder in what is being suspected to be an ‘honour killing’ over her relationship with a man from another caste.

In Delhi, Pathak’s friends met National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Girija Vyas and sought harsh punishment for her killers.

‘We have arrested Sudha Devi and are interrogating the journalist’s father and brother. The arrest has been made on circumstantial evidence,’ Koderma’s Superintendent of Police (Koderma) G. Kranti Kumar told IANS. Pathak’s family home is in Koderma, around 200 km from Ranchi.

‘We are interrogating the family who are suspects in the murder. We will arrest other people also if we get evidence,’ Kranti Kumar said.

‘They are frequently changing their statements. First, her mother said she died due to electrocution. Later the family members produced a suicide note and said she killed herself by hanging from the ceiling fan. The post-mortem says she was murdered by smothering. It also revealed that she was 10-12 weeks pregnant,’ the official said.

Vyas said the NCW had ’sought a detailed report from the Koderma district police about the death of the girl.’

Pathak, 23, worked for Business Standard in New Delhi. She had come home in Koderma district April 19 and was due to return April 28, but her reservation was cancelled. She was was found dead April 29.

Passing out of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi last year, she was having an affair with her former batchmate – a relationship her parents reportedly did not approve of.

‘The investigation is continuing in the right direction, but the whole process will take longer time. I am determined to take the fight to its logical conclusion and get justice for her,’ Priyabhanshu Ranjan, whom Pathak wanted to marry, told IANS.

‘She called me on April 28 to say that her train ticket was cancelled and that she was kept under constant watch. But then on April 29 she sent me a message saying she will try to come to Delhi,’ said Ranjan, a journalist in the capital.

Ranjan and Pathak’s friends are also planning to form a group to monitor the developments in the case.

‘It was suspected from day one that she was killed by her parents as she was planning to marry her IIMC batchmate who was from a different caste. We want stringent action against those behind the killing,’ said Ranveer Singh, another batchmate.

PSU insurers plan health claims settlement agency

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:14 AM PDT

Chennai, May 3 (IANS) Four state-owned non-life insurers – National Insurance Company, New India Assurance Company, Oriental Insurance Company and United India Insurance Company – are moving towards floating a common health insurance claims settlement agency or third party administrator (TPA).

‘The boards of United India and New India have approved in principle the formation of a common TPA. The boards of other two companies have to give the green signal. After that the structure of the new company and manning it will have to be decided,’ G.Srinivasan, United India chairman and managing director, told reporters here Monday.

The four insurers are not happy with the manner in which claims are being processed and settled by the existing TPAs.

Insurers complain about diversion of float funds provided to TPAs to other group ventures rather than for using it for settling claims.

Further, the bulk of the business for the TPAs are provided by the government insurers with standalone health insurers and some non-life insurers deciding to settle claims in-house.

With health insurance claims mounting, the four government owned non-life insurers are focussing on ways to minimise the claims outgo.

United India’s health insurance claims ratio for last fiscal stands at around 131 percent.

The earlier expectations of TPAs trying to bring down the treatment costs by hard negotiations with the hospitals have not materialised.

‘United India is trying to negotiate better rates with the hospitals. We are also tightening the supervision of the TPAs,’ Srinivasan said.

Before the advent of TPAs, the big four non-life insurers were processing the claims in-house.

‘Earlier there was no cashless claims settlement – payment directly to the hospitals- it was always the policyholders getting reimbursement. The advent of cashless necessitates different set of IT infrastructure and people,’ said Srinivasan.

He said consulting firm KPMG had given a report on the feasibility of setting up a common TPAs by the four companies a year ago.

Haven’t got my due in Bollywood, rues Udita Goswami

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:12 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Model-turned-actress Udita Goswami feels she has not got her due in Bollywood, which she is worthy of after doing quality work in films like ‘Rokk’ and ‘Paap’.

‘I haven’t got my due in Bollywood which I should have got till now. I have given films, done meaningful roles that not all actresses get. I feel the reason for my being on the backfoot could be that I don’t believe in public relation (PR) practices, which have become a regular routine for any celebrity,’ Udita told IANS in an interview.

‘But that is something that I can’t do, there are certain things that I don’t want to change about myself. I do my work with all honesty and there is no scope for short-cuts or cheating.’

The 26-year-old, whose latest movie ‘Chase’ released last week, said she makes it a point not to repeat her roles but is still typed cast to a specific genre.

‘I have been doing all kind of roles, but still I have been typed cast with this ‘bold tag’.’

‘The only thing that I think I have not done is a happy romantic kind of film… romantic comedy. I know it is strange since most of the actresses have done something like that and not done the kind of films that I have done. I want to actually do something that is so common. I’m really looking forward to doing a happy romantic film now.’

Udita started her career in modelling and then moved to acting in 2003 with her debut film ‘Paap’ directed by Pooja Bhatt. After that she appeared in ‘Zeher’ with Emraan Hashmi and Shamita Shetty.

Udita said the choice of director is the most important for an actor to get his/her due credit.

‘I look at a lot of things — first, the script, then the setup that you are working in and then the most important thing, the director… you know, even if it is a very regular script, it is the director who makes all the difference in giving the same ghisaa pitaa (regular) story an interesting look.’

The actress revealed that she is going back to college as she left her studies in between.

‘I’m going to Los Angeles.. I’m enrolling myself to the New York academy. It’s time I set my priorities right. I don’t care if 80 percent of our industry is not well read. I don’t want to be one of them.

‘I agree that I started my career quite early but I don’t want my kids to ever say that our mother is not even well educated. One can achieve what he wants but being educated is very important,’ she said.

Udita’s future projects include Sunny Deol’s production ‘The Man’ where she plays a role of a spy and Shabnam Kapoor’s ‘Hello India’ starring Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Namrata Shirodkar.

Government to set up Broadcasting Authority

Posted: 03 May 2010 08:12 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 3 (IANS) Moving beyond the contentious debate about content regulation, the government is looking at setting up a Broadcasting Authority of India, a nodal agency that would look into issues like foreign investment, digitalisation and a fresh TV rating mechanism (TRP).

We are looking at setting up an authority which looks after other broadcasting issues, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters here Monday.

‘Content is not the only issue. This new body will deal with issues like TRP, digitalisation and FDI in media,’ said Soni.

Some of the names being considered for the new body includes Broadcasting Authority of India, she said, adding that a task force has been set up for this purpose.

The information and broadcasting ministry thought of a new nodal agency to address critical broadcasting concerns as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), to which it referred these issues for advice, was not able to respond quickly.

With a spate of complaints coming in about the misuse of TV rating points(TRPs) to drive up competition among TV networks, the government is also considering setting up a body that could flesh out a more representative audience research mechanism, said Soni.

The TRAI has recommended setting up of Broadcasting Audience Research Council (BARC) which will go into the flaws of the existing TRP system and suggest a more acceptable and accurate alternative.

Alluding to the dragging debate about a content code for electronic media, Soni said: ‘We are working towards a mechanism of co-regulation,’ she said. She added that her ministry has held several meetings with stakeholders on this issue, but was in no hurry to push the pace of evolving consensus on the issue.
