Bill Gates to visit Amethi with Rahul Gandhi Tuesday

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:50 AM PDT

Microsoft chief Bill Gates will join Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on a visit to his parliamentary constituency, Amethi, in Uttar Pradesh Tuesday.

The visit was kept a closely guarded secret until late Monday evening, party sources said.

Even top state Congress leaders were unaware of the move, as Gandhi had intended it to be a completely quiet affair, away from media gaze.

However, it is learnt that Gandhi proposes to take Gates to the same village where he spent a night along with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband in a ramshackle hut belonging to a poor Dalit.

The Congress leader is also understood to have arranged an interaction between Gates and women self-help groups formed by him in his constituency.

They proposes to take a chartered flight from New Delhi to Fursatganj from where they would drive down to Amethi around 10 a.m.

“My Lok Manch is a non-political forum on the lines of V.P. Singh’s Jan Morcha, but I do not deny that this body will eventually merge into the sea of politics,” Singh told media persons here Monday.

Accompanied by his Bollywood entourage comprising Sanjay Dutt, Jaya Prada and Manoj Tiwari, he said: “I propose to launch a full scale movement with effect from Dec 1, for the creation of an independent state of Purvanchal to be carved out of the neglected backward Eastern Uttar Pradesh.”

He ruled out any possibility of the Bachchans joining his outfit. “Amitabh Bachchan is a non political person and as far as his wife Jaya is concerned, she may be part of my family, but I cannot impose anything on her,” he said.

No suicide note has been recovered by police and a sub-district magistrate is investigating the matter.

Hyderabad sizzles at 44 degrees Celsius

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:32 AM PDT

Monday was the hottest day of this season in Hyderabad as the mercury touched 44 degrees Celsius, the weatherman said.

A day after recording 43 degrees, the mercury rose by another degree Monday, making the weather yet more unbearable for the residents.

Streets were deserted in the afternoon as most of the people preferred to remain indoors to escape the heat.

According to the Met department, the hot weather conditions would continue at least for the next few days.

The citizens had heaved a sigh of relief last week after the temperature fell to normal level following thundershowers. The weather had remained pleasant almost the entire week.

However, the hot weather conditions returned Sunday with the mercury once again soaring to 43 degrees.

Adilabad remained the hottest place in Andhra Pradesh with the mercury hovering around 45 degrees Celsius.

Delhi to have central mechanism to dispose of scrap

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:32 AM PDT

The Delhi cabinet Monday decided to engage a central government enterprise to dispose of scrap material in a systematic, fast and transparent manner.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the MSTC Ltd, a regulatory authority for export of ferrous scrap, has agreed to provide services to the state government departments and also assured to strive hard in getting the best prices for the scrap material through e-auction.

“The new mechanism will help in disposal of scrap in a systematic, fast and transparent manner,” Dikshit added.

Dikshit said various departments under the state government were facing difficulties in disposal of their scrap materials.

Earlier, the scrap materials would occupy space in offices and also disposal by the departments individually was not fetching a good price.

The cabinet’s decision comes in the wake of radiation leak from a scrap market in Mayapuri area of west Delhi. The source of the leak was a radioactive Gamma Cell containing Cobalt-60 that was auctioned as scrap by Delhi University’s chemistry department over two months ago.

At a meeting presided over by Dikshit, the cabinet also took a decision to recommend the prorogation of budget session of the 4th legislative assembly.

The budget session of the assembly commenced March 15 and was adjourned sine die on April 1.

Supreme Court allows Reddy brothers to resume mining (Lead)

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:23 AM PDT

In a relief to mining barons Reddy brothers, the Supreme Court Monday permitted them to resume their mining activities in the undisputed area in Andhra Pradesh’s Obulapuram.

The court said that the mining activity would be 150 metres away from the Karnataka border and would not touch the disputed area where different mining leases are overlapping.

A bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice Deepak Verma and Justice B.S. Chauhan said that the Reddy brothers’ Obulapuram Mining Company (OMC) would undertake mining activity in accordance with the maps submitted to the court by the Survey of India.

The court asked the Survey of India to complete the demarcation of six mining leases within two months.

The Survey of India in its earlier report to the apex court had pointed out the need for re-demarcation of the six mining leases operating in the area. Of the six mining leases in the area, three belong to the Reddy brothers.

The order written by Justice Verma said that the OMC would cease its operations as and when the Survey of India starts its work on the mapping and demarcation of the area.

The order also asked the Karnataka government to fence off the disputed area of its border with Andhra Pradesh.

The mining operations in the area had come to a halt after an apex court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) on environmental matters said the Reddy brothers were mining beyond their leased area and were encroaching upon a part of Bellary forests in Karnataka.

During the last hearing, the Survey of India pointed to encroachment by the OMC but said these were marginal and in the absence of a clear demarcation of the border these were in dispute.

Senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi appearing for the OMC argued that since there was no clear demarcation of the border, the business of the Reddy brothers could not be choked.

The court too agreed with the plea and indicated that mining could be permitted in the undisputed area.

The court last week reserved orders on the plea of the Reddy brothers to allow them iron ore mining in Obulapuram on the Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka border.

The three Reddy brothers — Gali Karunakar Reddy, Gali Janardhan Reddy and Gali Soma Shekhar Reddy — are considered politically influential. Their company is engaged in mining and transportation of iron ore in Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh. Of the three brothers, two — Janasthan Reddy and Karunakar Reddy — are cabinet ministers in the BJP-ruled Karnataka government.

Gordon Brown resigns as the leader of the Labour Party

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:18 AM PDT

Gordon Brown Resign

Gordon Brown Resign

Adding a fresh drama to the post election phase, Gordon Brown decided to resign as the leader of the Labour Party and as the Prime Minister. Brown also stated that he won't be standing for the post of the leader when the fresh elections for the party leader take place before September. He did it in the light of the Liberal Democratic leader Nick Clegg demanding that he is willing to consider a deal with the Labour Party to form a government but only if Brown is not at the helm.

The Britain elections have yielded a hung parliament, the first time since 1974. Brown stated that the elections meant that no leader could actually have the confidence of the whole nation. While at the same time Clegg was negotiating with the conservatives for the formation of government. One of the clauses of the Conservatives is that the two party elections should be done away with to which many Conservatives are in opposition.

If the deal between the Lib Democrats and the Conservatives goes through, it will lead to Cameron becoming the Prime Minister. Fears of the stock market going down because of the hung parliament were unfounded as it rose up five percent in the day due to EU agreements. Watch this space for more on the Britain elections.

Arunachal students group demands Ramesh’s resignation

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:18 AM PDT

The All Arunachal Pradesh Student Union (AAPSU) Monday demanded the resignation of Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh for advocating Chinese expertise to implement hydrological projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

Its activists also burnt the effigy of Ramesh at Bank Tinali area here to register their protest.

“Jairam Ramesh’s statement is a setback to the people of Arunachal. We have been fighting tooth and nail against Chinese claim over Arunachal. Inviting Chinese experts to work here is like implanting a self-destructive bomb,” AAPSU president Takam Tatung told IANS.

He termed Ramesh’s statements as “anti-Indian” and “anti-Arunachalee”.

“Why can’t the central government invite other companies from other countries barring China to carry out hydro-projects in Arunachal?” Tatung asked, clarifying the AAPSU was not against the ongoing hydro-power projects, but would oppose any move to bring in Chinese companies to operate in the state.

Endowed with perennial rivers and streams, Arunachal Pradesh is considered a powerhouse for electricity generation with an estimated potential for 50,000 MW.

The Central Electricity Authority has estimated the potential from 89 big hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh at 49,126 MW while smaller ones are expected to generate another 1,600 MW.

Asked about Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rebuking Ramesh for his statements, Tatung said that the prime minister should question Ramesh for undermining the Arunachal people’s resolve to boycott Chinese products.

“We boycotted Chinese goods to protest China’s claim over the state of Arunachal, which is an integral part of sovereign India,” Tatung said.

Ramesh created a flutter when he said in Beijing Saturday that the policies of the Indian home ministry and security establishment towards Chinese companies were “alarmist and paranoid”.

In Beijing to attend a global meet on climate change, he said there was danger that cooperation with China flowing from the Copenhagen spirit would not last long unless New Delhi changed “a needlessly restrictive, alarmist approach” to Chinese investment in infrastructure.

“The suspicious attitude of the security establishment is spoiling the bonhomie between the (countries), created as a result of close collaboration on international negotiations on climate change,” he had said.

Pattinson, Stewart dating ‘100 percent’

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:15 AM PDT

“Twilight” actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart’s aides have confirmed the actors are dating “100 percent” in an off-air chat with Oprah Winfrey.

“Both Rob and Kristen’s people then confirmed ahead of time they are together and are dating. One hundred percent,” dailystar.co.uk quoted a source who was recording the episode as saying.

When the pair was asked the dating question, Stewart insisted she will never discuss her love life, while Pattinson joked that the actress was pregnant. Stewart then quipped that Pattinson was having the baby.

The episode will air May 13.

Holders Pakistan keep their hopes live, South Africa knocked out (Lead)

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:15 AM PDT

Defending champions Pakistan kept alive their hopes for a semi-final berth and knocked out South Africa of the World Twenty20, beating them by 11 runs in their last Group E match of the Super Eights here Monday.

Spinner Saeed Ajmal's four for 26 and Man of the Match Umar Akmal's 51 kept Pakistan in the hunt and now they have to hope that England, who are now already through, beat New Zealand in the next match of the day at the Beausejour Stadium.

Umar and Shahid Afridi, who smashed an 18-ball 30, set up Pakistan’s total of 148 for seven after a slow start. Opener Kamran Akmal also struck a valuable 37 after skipper Afridi opted to bat.

South African batsmen then found Ajmal's ‘doosras’ tough to handle and could make only 137 for seven with A.B. de Villiers scoring 53.

The Proteas lived up to their tag of chokers once again and lost four wickets for just 68 runs on a track that kept low and slow.

Opener Herschelle Gibbs (3) was sent packing by a stunning catch above his head by Misbah-ul-Haq on the edge of the circle at mid-wicket, before the out-of-form captain Graeme Smith (13) spooned a simple catch to Afridi at mid-on.

Kallis (22) and De Villiers then rebuilt the Proteas’ innings, but failed to get the hits, leaving South Africa to get 100 from the last 10 overs.

Umar took an excellent catch diving forward on the run in from long-on to dismiss Kallis, while Latif held on at deep midwicket as Jean Paul Duminy tried to hit out.

De Villiers smashed 20 off one over from Abdur Rehman, but when he departed top-edging an attempted outrageous flick over the keeper’s head off Ajmal, the Proteas challenge was all but over.

Earlier in the day, Kamran played a responsible innings of 37 from 33 balls and helped Pakistan recover from a precarious 69 for four.

Umar and Afridi added 61 runs for the fifth wicket to give the bowlers a target of defend. Umar hit four sixes and two fours while Afridi smacked four fours and a six in his 18-ball innings.

Penelope Cruz named world’s most beautiful woman

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:12 AM PDT

Oscar winning actress Penelope Cruz has been named the world’s most beautiful woman in a list compiled by fashion expert Sally.

Fashion expert Sally Allen spent a year looking at press coverage to compile the list.

“Our top 10 women are often the subject of spontaneous and unexpected press exposure yet always manage, somehow to look great. Sometimes they are caught without their make-up, on bad hair days, or in less than flattering poses, but their natural beauty always seems to shine through,” contactmusic.com quoted Allen as saying.

“There is no question in my mind that Penelope Cruz is a worthy winner. She was an undoubtedly pretty girl when she started her acting career at 16 but, 20 years later, she has matured into a particularly beautiful woman and a fine actress,” said Allen.

Allen explains the difference between beautiful and pretty.

“As someone once said, the difference between pretty and beautiful is that pretty is temporal, whereas beautiful is eternal,” she added.

Top 10 of the world’s most beautiful women:

1 – Penelope Cruz

2 – Claudia Schiffer

3 – Kristin Scott Thomas

4 – Queen Rania of Jordan

5 – Catherine Deneuve

6 – Dame Helen Mirren

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian has spoken out in defence of high-waisted “mom jeans”.

Exports jump 54 percent in March; dip 4.7 percent for 2009-10

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:10 AM PDT

India’s merchandise exports grew by 54.1 percent in March to $19.9 billion, but the value of the outward shipments dipped 4.7 percent to $176.5 billion for 2009-10 mainly due to the global meltdown, according to official data released Monday.

The exports in March 2009 stood at $12.9 billion and in 2008-09 at $185.3 billion, data showed.

“The fall of 4.7 percent has been mainly due to the global meltdown, but still we have been able to perform well. The whole world has been affected by the global meltdown. There has been a big slump in traditional markets where we export. Market diversification has actually helped us recover the losses to a great extent,” Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said here.

The exports were in the red for 13 successive months, starting October 2008. They started turning positive in November 2009.

The imports stood at $27.7 billion in March, a growth of 67.1 percent over $16.6 billion in year-ago period.

The oil imports during March grew by 85.2 percent to $7.7 billion from $4.2 billion in the same month last year and non-oil imports increased by 61 percent to $20 billion from $12.4 billion, the data showed.

The imports for 2009-10 stood at $278.7 billion, a fall of 8.2 percent from the previous fiscal’s $303.7 billion.

In 2009-10, oil imports declined by 8.7 percent to $85.5 billion from $93.7 billion in previous year and non-oil imports dipped by eight percent to $193.2 billion as against $210 billion in 2008-2009.

The trade deficit declined to $102.1 billion in 2009-10 from $118.4 billion in previous fiscal.

Sharma Monday said the country is maintaining a very “strong positive growth” in exports and hopes to sustain it.

“April figures will certainly be good,” he said when asked about the export data for the month.

On the exports front, the sectors which were in red during 2009-10 include engineering, electronics, handicrafts, carpets and cotton yarn.

“Some sectors continue to hurt badly like engineering, electronic goods, handicrafts and carpets. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade along with commerce ministry officials is conducting the sectoral reviews to find out whether more steps are needed to be taken for the sectors that are getting hurt,” Sharma said.

Asked whether the government will extend sops for the exporters, he said: “The process of consultation is a regular exercise done by both commerce and finance ministry officials. We are looking into it.”

Marine products, iron ore, tea, tobacco, fruits and vegetables and man-made fibres were the sectors which reported growth in exports during 2009-10.

The government has set a target of $200 billion-worth merchandise exports for 2010-11, the minister said, adding that India wants to double its exports by 2014.

Ramesh writes to PM, Sonia to explain his position

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:09 AM PDT

In a tight spot over his remarks in Beijing criticising the government’s policy towards Chinese companies, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi explaining his position.

A senior Congress leader, who didn’t want to be identified, said the minister wrote to the two leaders after he was rebuked by the prime minister for his remarks that have stirred into a major political controversy.

He said he did not know the details of the note.

The prime minister had telephoned Ramesh and made it clear that he should not to comment on the functioning of ministries outside his domain.

The Congress too admonished the minister, conveying its strong disapproval of his remarks.

“Congress wants to make it clear that commenting on departments that are not in a minister’s domain is not at all appropriate. It should not be done under any circumstances on foreign soil,” party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi told reporters here.

Singhvi said there were fora within the government and party for individual leaders to air their views.

Government notifies ban on FDI in cigarette manufacturing

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:08 AM PDT

The Indian government Monday notified the ban on foreign direct investment (FDI) in cigarette manufacturing.

A decision in this regard was taken by the cabinet committee on economic affairs last month.

“Manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes, of tobacco or of tobacco substitutes have been put under the lists of the sectors where FDI is prohibited,” an official statement said here.

Earlier, the government had allowed 100 percent FDI in cigarette manufacturing, with prior approval of Foreign Investment Promotion Board and also subject to obtaining an industrial license under the Industries (Development & Regulation) Act, 1951.

The amendments have been made in the Consolidated FDI Policy, dated March 31, by the department of industrial policy and promotion.

The decision, effective immediately, has been taken by the Indian government to promote anti-smoking measures in the country.

Prior to this, the government had banned smoking at public places and put a curb on tobacco advertisements.

Supreme Court stays death for American Center attacker (

Posted: 10 May 2010 11:07 AM PDT

The Supreme Court Monday stayed the death sentence of Mohammed Jamiluddin Nasir who is one of the two convicts sent to the gallows for an attack on the American Center in Kolkata Jan 22, 2002, that left six policemen dead.

Besides staying the death sentence of Nasir till the time his appeal is pendening, an apex court bench of Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, Justice Deepak Verma and Justice B.S. Chauhan issued notices on an appeal by the West Bengal government.

The state government challenged the lower sentences awarded to five other convicts in the attack and demanded that their sentences be enhanced.

Counsel Nitya Ramakrishnan appearing for Nasir said that the other convict, Aftab Ahmed Ansari, awarded death sentence on charges of waging war against the country, was also in the process of filing an appeal.

Both convicts were awarded death terms by the trial court April 26, 2005. The death sentence was confirmed by the Calcutta High Court Feb 5, 2010.

The trial court had acquitted two accused — Shakil Mallik and Dilip Kumar Kantilla — and awarded death to seven accused for their involvement in the 2002 attack.

On a reference, the high court only confirmed death penalty of the Nasir and Ansari and let off the other five with lighter sentences.

Those let off with lighter sentences included Adil Hussain, Rehan Alam, Musarat Hussain, Husrat Alam and Shakir Akhtar.

In its appeal through counsel Abhijit Bhattacharjee, the state government contended that the high court judgment acquitting the five of the charge of waging war and convicting them on lesser count of forging documents was “erroneous both in fact and law”.

The government’s appeal petition faulted the high court for failing to see that all of them were a part of a larger conspiracy to wage war against the country.

Their acts were steps in the ultimate act of waging war against the country and could not be seen in isolation, the petition said.

One group which printed fake documents knew that it was to be for criminal acts to be carried out in India and the other had knowledge of who they were working for, the petition by the West Bengal government said.
