Family and friends remember Aarushi on her second death anniversary

Posted: 16 May 2010 11:34 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) “Love u Aarushi” — said the huge posters at the entrance of Chinmaya Mission where family and friends gathered Sunday to remember the girl who was full of life but was brutally killed two years ago in mysterious circumstances.

Inside, two huge smiling photographs of Aarushi were kept at the dais, as candles flickered and showed the once happy teenaged girl, the daughter of dentist parents Rajesh and Nupur Talwar.

As hymns and soft prayers rented the air, friends and family recalled the girl who touched their lives.

Aarushi was found murdered mysteriously in their Jalvayu Vihar apartment in Noida May 16, 2008. The family's domestic help, Hemraj, who was initially suspected for the murder, was found killed on their terrace a day later.

At the prayer meet, her parents kept their heads lowered and hands folded and did not speak. It was left for Rajesh’s brother Dinesh Talwar to announce that the family has started a society in the name of Aarushi to reach out to the disadvantaged children.

“Arushi’s family has started a society called Arushi’s legacy. Arushi was the light of their lives and they had dreams for her. Through this society they want to see the dreams of other less fortunate children to be realised,” Dinesh Talwar, a medical practitioner like his brother, told the packed auditorium.

He said they had recently organised a medical camp in a deprived area of the national capital. He did not name the area.

Describing Aarushi as an “angel,” her close friend and classmate Rajeshwari said: “She will always be my best friend.”

“She is here and looking at us like an angle. We should all stand up for her now to seek justice for her,” said Rajeshwari, who studied in the same class in DPS Noida.

As the ceremony concluded and people spilled out, both Rajesh and Nupur stood at the gate, thanking everyone for attending the prayer meet and hugging Aarushi’s close friends.

Both of them also kept the media at bay. Relatives stood out side the gate to stop the electronic media and cameras from intruding into the grief of the family, which has seen the wost time since the murder of their only daughter that still continue to remain an unsolved mystery.

It was a sensational murder that shocked the country and dominated media headlines and drawing room conversations for weeks.

For the family, the arrest of Rajesh, who was arrested and kept behind bars for 50 days in connection with the crimes and was later let off because of lack of evidence against him, continue to haunt them. After Rajesh Talwar was let off, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the case, arrested his medical assistant Krishna and two other domestic helps in the neighbourhood Raj Kumar and Vijay Mandal.

All of them were freed after a period of detention while the CBI continues to hunt for material evidence.

World Cup officials apologise to Indian shooters

Posted: 16 May 2010 11:24 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) The local organisers of the shooting World Cup at Dorset in England apologised to the Indian team Sunday after the shooters were harassed and insulted by the tournament officials.

Team manager M. Padmanabhan informed National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) officials that following the news of harassment of Indian shooters, chairman of local organising committee Peter Underhill and Stephen Minto, who was in charge of transportation and accommodation, tendered their apology for the untoward incident at the Southern County Shooting Ranges at Dorset Saturday.

The team bus driver had shut the door even as an Indian shooter was about to board the bus and left him stranded at the range. When the other shooters on the bus strongly objected, the driver turned back and went to the supervisor of the transport department.

World body president Sheikh Salman Alsabah and vice-president Luciano Rossi were also present in the meeting after which the Indian team decided to drop the issue.

Sports Minister M.S. Gill had also taken strong note of the reported harassment of Indian shooters and asked his officers to get the details of the incident so that the matter can be taken up with higher authorities in London.

Gill held a meeting with his officials here Sunday asking them to get details of the incident from the NRAI and the Indian High Commission in London.

“The sports minister, taking note of the media reports regarding the harassment of Indian shooters in UK, held a meeting with ministry officials this (Sunday) morning. The minister has directed officers to get in touch with officials of the NRAI and the Indian High Commission in London to know the full details,” a sports ministry official said.

NRAI secretary-general Baljeet Singh Sethi told IANS that it was a clear case of racism.

“They still consider us as their slaves. Such incidents have taken place in the past as well during the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester,” Sethi said.

Padmanabhan said the transport department officials of the event also misbehaved with the Indian shooters.

Ace trap shooter and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Manavjit Singh Sandhu said a couple of transport officials were very rude with the Indian contingent.

Two days back, two Indian female shooters were forced to get down from the bus, Padmanabhan alleged.

Padmanabhan then shot off a letter to the Indian High Commission informing them about the harassment of the Indian shooters at the event.

I’ll never forgive Polanski, says British actress

Posted: 16 May 2010 11:00 AM PDT

London, May 16 (IANS) British actress Charlotte Lewis is adamant she will “never forgive” filmmaker Roman Polanski for allegedly abusing her when she was just 16 years old, insisting the incident ruined her life.

Lewis, who appeared in Polanski’s 1986 film “Pirates”, held a news conference Friday, claiming the director took advantage of her “in the worst way” at his apartment in France when she was just a teenager, reports imdb.com.

The alleged incident came several years after Polanski fled the US for France, skipping sentencing after pleading guilty to a charge of unlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer in 1977.

Lewis, now 42, has alleged her encounter with Polanski in 1983 affected all her future relationships and ruined her Hollywood career as she sank into drug abuse.

“I know I should have gone to the relevant authorities at the time but I was scared and ashamed. I somehow thought it was my fault. He sexually abused me and manipulated me in the worst way. He has scarred me and the experience has definitely put a strain on my life,” she said.

“I was recently engaged to a lovely man, but I would often clam up physically and I don’t think I am very good in relationships. I will never forgive Polanski for what he has done to me. I’ll never know if my life would have been different if this had not happened. There needs to be some justice. I’m telling the truth and Roman Polanski knows I’m telling the truth,” she added.

Lewis said she met with Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney David Walgren to report her allegations.

Polanski’s lawyer Georges Kiejman has told a French news channel he is “absolutely astonished” by Lewis’ claims, and revealed that the director’s legal team is considering taking action over the allegations and added: “It is probable that we (will) take her to court”.

Another of Polanski’s attorneys, Herve Timime, said: “Everything that has been said is a web of lies.”

Posted: 16 May 2010 10:59 AM PDT

London, May 16 (IANS) British actor Jude Law and his girlfriend-actress Sienna Miller are planning to make their reunion official, as the couple prepare to marry this summer, says a media report.

The actor made his first public appearance with his former fiancee at a red carpet event in New York City earlier this month and confirmed rumours they had revived their relationship after a messy split in 2006.

Miller called off their engagement shortly after Law’s alleged affair with his children’s nanny was exposed in the tabloids.

But the couple is now said to have “put the past behind them” and are planning to go ahead with their wedding this summer, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“They don’t want to jinx things by talking about it. But they have told their nearest and dearest that they would like to get married in the summer. They have put the past behind them and want to move on. Sienna is also saying that she has some other really exciting news, but she is not saying anything to anyone at the moment,” a source said.

The insider also claims the couple is planning an initial wedding in Gloucestershire, Britain, before travelling to New York for a second ceremony.

Jaya TV’s popular ‘Jackpot’ to go on without Kushboo

Posted: 16 May 2010 09:22 AM PDT

Chennai, May 16 (IANS) Jaya TV, backed by Tamil Nadu’s opposition AIADMK, has dumped Kushboo from its hugely popular show “Jackpot” after the actress joined the ruling DMK, but the channel officials say the show will go on.

“Talks are on with a couple of probable anchors. The show will resume soon. The new anchor will be an apolitical person,” a Jaya TV official told IANS on condition of anonymity.

Perhaps that rules out actress Simran who had earlier campaigned for the AIADMK.

Both Kushboo and Jaya TV have literally lost a jackpot.

The loss is higher for Jaya TV as it has to forego the payment made to the actress for 18 episodes already shot which now stand scrapped.

“The 400th episode was slated for May 30. It is certainly a popular programme. The stoppage will result in a financial loss for Jaya TV as it will not get the money from the sponsors,” the official said.

Queried about Kushboo’s statement that she has not been intimated about the contract cancellation, the official said: “She too could have told us about her decision to join the DMK party on Friday itself.”

According to the official, Kushboo was supposed to sign a contract for acting in a Jaya TV serial Friday afternoon.

“The discussions were held that morning and she was supposed to sign the agreement that afternoon. However, there was no intimation from her nor she came to office to sign the agreement,” the TV channel official said.

On her part, Kushboo has said that she expected such a move from Jaya TV after joining the DMK.

Kushboo was in a spot after she expressed a positive view on pre-marital sex in an interview to a magazine.

Several cases were filed against her and recently the Supreme Court came to her rescue, dismissing all the cases.

I’m committed to Ram temple: Kalyan Singh

Posted: 16 May 2010 09:18 AM PDT

Agra, May 16 (IANS) Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice-president Kalyan Singh Sunday reiterated his commitment to building the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Talking to mediapersons in Agra, Kalyan Singh said he would support anyone who came forward and took the initiative to complete the project.

Kalyan Singh accused both the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of indulging in corrupt practices and dividing the society on caste lines.

Kalyan Singh said caste census was necessary as it would help the government work on specific schemes for the welfare of the people down in the social ladder.

Kalyan Singh, who severed his ties with the Samajwadi Party, formed the Jan Kranti Party earlier this year.

He was in Agra to attend a marriage of a party leader.

He said the BJP was in a shambles in the state and even if Uma Bharti returned to the party, no difference would be made.

Kalyan Singh was also critical of the working of the Mayawati government.

We have identified a pool of players: Harendra

Posted: 16 May 2010 09:13 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) India’s national hockey coach Harendra Singh said the Azlan Shah Cup victory has come at the right time to lift the sagging morale of the team after their eighth-place finish in the World Cup at home.

India retained the Azlan Shah Cup hockey title, winning it for the fifth time, after they were declared joint winners with South Korea as heavy rains washed out the final Sunday.

Harendra, however, said that too much should not be looked into the win as all the teams, including India, were fielding experimental sides in the tournament.

“It will certainly boost the morale of the team. But after every win we tend to forget that we have to improve as a team. We have a long way to go,” Harendra told IANS from Ipoh, Malaysia.

“We won the tournament last year also, and too much should not be read into this victory because all the teams were fielding experimantal sides. Yes, a title triumph is always good. It motivates us to improve and perform better and it is good for the game in the country.

“So, it is a step in the right direction.”

“But we need to improve vastly if we have to compete and do well against the top European sides. We have to keep working on every aspects of the game.”

Harendra said the positives from the tournament is that the country has identified a pool of players who could form the core of the team for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games this year.

“We wanted to try out new faces after the World Cup. And the selectors did the right thing by including fresh players. We experimented with the players and the results have been very good. We have identified a pool of players and we would like to test more youngsters so that we are fully prepared before the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.”

This was the Indian team’s first international outing since the World Cup at home, where they finished eighth and the senior players in the side drew flak for their disappointing show.

The team responded well under skipper Rajpal Singh in the tournament. Their defence and penalty corner conversions were the weak points, but the free-flowing mid-fielders played a vital role.

Experienced Arjun Halappa was the fulcrum in the midfield with Bharat Chikkara and Vikas Pillay playing their part. Gurbaj Singh and Prabodh Tirkey controlled the flanks superbly. Also, the forward line of Tushar Khandker, Shivendra and skipper Rajpal put up an admirable performance.

Harendra said players like Bharat Chikara, Rupinder Pal Singh, and Amit Prabhakar have performed well in the tournament.

“We need to be better in penalty corner conversions, but we have scored more field goals and it is a good sign. We have to be more solid in defence but we experimented a lot with defenders and the results were good,” he said.

Atlantis docks for last time at space station

Posted: 16 May 2010 09:11 AM PDT

Washington, May 16 (DPA) The Atlantis shuttle docked Sunday on its last mission to the space station after some tense hours about dodging a piece of orbiting debris.

NASA officials debated through Saturday about whether to reposition the International Space Station (ISS) to avoid a speeding piece of space junk.

But they ultimately decided that updated tracking information “showed the object will remain a safe distance away and the manoeuvre is not necessary.”

Atlantis blasted off Friday from Cape Canaveral on its farewell mission after 25 years of service. Only two more shuttle flights remain – Endeavour and Discovery.

On its way to the station, the Atlantis crew had to do a make-shift examination of its heat shield for damages after a cable snagged on the 17-metre boom normally used for the check. Instead, a laser camera and a digital camera mounted near the end of the boom were used, NASA said.

Before docking at the ISS, Atlantis performed a pirouette for the space station cameras to make one final check of the integrity of the shield.

The shield checks were started after the 2003 disintegration of the Columbia shuttle as it re-entered Earth’s atmosphere. The explosion was blamed on nicks in the heat shield caused by tumbling insulation that peeled off the fuel tanks during lift-off.

All seven Columbia astronauts perished. Among them was Indian-origin American Kalpana Chawla.

The first Atlantis spacewalk is set for Monday. Astronauts Steve Bowen and Garrett Reisman will install a spare space-to-ground antenna and then install a tool platform on the Dextre robotic arm.

British airports close after volcanic ash spreads

Posted: 16 May 2010 08:55 AM PDT

London, May 16 (IANS) Over 200 flights were cancelled and many British airports had to be closed Sunday as volcanic ash from Iceland drifted across Europe, even as forecasts said airports in the capital city would be severely affected by Tuesday.

Airports at East Midlands, Manchester, Liverpool, Doncaster, Humberside and Carlisle were shut down between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. local time, after the Civil Aviation Authority declared them as “no-fly zones”.

Eruption of ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier in Iceland, which began April 14, has affected air traffic throughout Europe, leaving thousands of travellers stranded and forcing over 20 European countries to close their airspace.

Airports in Northern Ireland and Scottish highlands and the Isle of Man were also affected. Though London airports remained open, travellers were asked to check with their airlines. The cloud is expected to lie over London by Tuesday, but is likely to drift out of British airspace by Wednesday.

Over 200 flights were cancelled across England and Northern Ireland. All three Northern Ireland airports – Belfast International, George Best Belfast City Airport and City of Derry Airport – cancelled flights until 11 p.m. local time.

Dublin airport will remain closed from 7 p.m. Sunday till 9 a.m. Monday, while Donegal, Sligo and Ireland West airports will be closed till noon Monday, the Irish Aviation Authority said.

A forecast said Sunday the ash cloud could extend further over Britain during Monday and Tuesday.

“Unfortunately, yet again, a mixture of volcanic activity and weather systems have conspired to bring a cloud of ash down towards the UK,” Jonathan Astill, of the air traffic authority was quoted as saying Sunday by the BBC.

Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur invited Hollywood director Tim Burton

Posted: 16 May 2010 05:43 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) Internationally renowned Indian movie maker Shekhar Kapur told he has invited Hollywood movie director Tim Burton, who specializes in dark & quirky themes, to scout for places in India for a movie.

“Tim Burton is a compassionate and gentle person and so eager to learn about other people and cultures. He is also completely fascinated by India. So I have invited him to come and see if there is something he would like to shoot in India,” Kapur, 64, posted on his blog www.shekharkapur.com/blog.

Burton, 51, has wielded megaphone for movies like “Batman”, “Batman Returns”, “Plane of the Apes”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” and “Alice in Wonderland”.

He is known for bringing magic realism out of the books onto the big screen.

“India is a country that accepts mythology and magic realism as an essential part of it's culture, as does Tim Burton in his filmmaking. It would be fascinating to see Tim Burton's visual take on some of our tradition folk tales,” said Kapur.

Kapur is serving as a jury of the 63rd Cannes International Film Festival headed by acclaimed filmmaker Burton.

“It's very exciting to be on the Jury of the Cannes film festival. Especially when the Jury is headed by the man I affectionately (but also seriously) call 'the Salvador Dali of Cinema',” wrote Kapur.

He also attended a gala dinner inspired from Burton’s works.

“For the first dinner with the jury, the chef had designed the dinner as an 'inspiration' from Tim Burton's movies! Everything looked like it was from the Mad Hatter's dining table (from ‘Alice in Wonderland’),” he posted.

“And while it was terrific looking and delicious, I kept waiting for the rice! After all what's a meal without rice and dal, or roti and dal?”

Ranjan Daimary is ready to hold unconditional peace talks

Posted: 16 May 2010 05:41 AM PDT

Guwahati, May 16 (IANS) Terror mastermind & chief of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Ranjan Daimary on Sunday told he was ready to hold unconditional peace talks with New Delhi but made it clear negotiations cannot be held with “handcuffs on”.

“I met my brother inside the court premises where he expressed the desire to sit for talks without any conditions, but made it amply clear that no negotiations can be held with handcuffs on,” Anjali Daimary, sister of the arrested Ranjan Daimary, told reporters.

“He is not anti-talk and even didn't mention about sovereignty as a precondition for negotiations,” Anjali said when asked if the NDFB chief was sticking to its demand of sovereignty or independence. But she indicated that he wanted to be set free before the talks.

Anjali met her brother inside the Chief Judicial Magistrate's (CJM) court Sunday for close to 90 minutes.

The CJM court had sent the NDFB chief to nine days in custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Daimary completed 16 days in police custody after he was handed over to Indian authorities by Bangladesh May 1.

The NDFB leader is named as the main accused in a CBI charge sheet that probed the Oct 30, 2008, serial explosions in Assam that killed about 100 people and injured 400 more.

“He (NDFB chief) wanted to take all his cadres and leaders into confidence and also talk to various Bodo groups so that once for all the Bodo problem can be resolved during talks with the government,” Anjali said, quoting Ranjan Daimary.

But the NDFB chief hinted peace talks could be possible only if he was released and set free.

“There can be no talks he said with handcuffs on. There has to be a congenial atmosphere for negotiations,” Anjali said.

The NDFB under Ranjan Daimary's leadership announced a unilateral ceasefire in 2004 with New Delhi, but he once again resumed his campaign for an independent homeland for the Bodo tribe after differences over some clauses in the ceasefire agreement with the central government.

The NDFB faction headed by its general secretary Gobinda Basumatary continued with the ceasefire, thereby leading to a split in the outfit in January 2010. Ranjan Daimary decided to break away and continue his separatist campaign out of Bangladesh.

“It was he who declared a unilateral ceasefire and now there has to be an atmosphere to begin the peace process once again,” Anjali said.
