Once Upon a Time in Mumbai

Mumbai, May 21 (IANS) The official theatrical movie trailer of Balaji’s forthcoming Ajay Devgan and Imraan Hashmi starrer movie “Once Upon A Time in Mumbai” was launched with “Kites” movie release on Friday.

Directed by Milan Luthria, “Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai” traces the changing face of the Mumbai underworld.

The film, set primarily in 1970 Mumbai, follows the rise of Sultan (Ajay Devgn) and his eventual fall when his protégé Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi) challenges his supremacy and usurps power to rule the murky underbelly of Mumbai.

Sources revealed that those who have seen the rushes of the film can't stop raving about it – thanks to its slick, clutter-breaking approach of mirroring reality something that the makers are known to do with élan. In fact, when the trailer was played on the big screen, audiences were seen whistling and hooting especially in multiplex theatres in the suburbs.

“In the day and age where production houses are churning out one comedy and romantic flick after another, Balaji dares to be different and comes out with a slick and entertaining film that makes you re-live the iconic days of the Mumbai of 1970s,” a source said in a statement.

Balaji and Milan Luthria’s “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” is all set to release worldwide July 30.

Posted: 21 May 2010 10:56 AM PDT

Islamabad, May 21 (DPA) A militant organization on Friday took blame for a sequence of low-level explosions that rattled a red light area in Lahore & hurt 3 citizens.

5 back-to-back explosions happened in Shahi Mohalla, a neighborhood where lady singers do dances for money & where clients can also reimburse for sexual favors. The blasts caused terror in the crowded streets.

“These were low-intensity explosions and no one was killed. Two people are injured. Among them is one policeman and a child,” said senior police officer Shafiq Gujjar. “These militants are trying to impose their way of life on us.”

A spokesman of the militant organisation Difa-e-Nazria-e-Pakistan (Defence of the Ideology of Pakistan) told reporters via text message a few minutes before the blasts that these were just warnings for those spreading obscenity in the country.

The groups has previously accepted responsibility for similar warning blasts near theaters and sites of cultural events.

Lahore, a cultural capital of militancy-plagued Pakistan, has seen several bombings since 2007, when Pakistan started serious military actions against Taliban and Al Qaeda in its tribal region near the Afghan border.

March 12 this year, two suicide bombers blew themselves up within seconds of each other near a convoy of military vehicles in the eastern city of Lahore, killing 48 people and injuring 95.

The children will undergo surgery at the Narayana Hrudayalaya Heart Institute in Bangalore, whose chief Devi Shetty is a familiar name here as he regularly performs surgeries, The Star reported Friday.

AirAsia group commercial regional head Kathleen Tan said the airline was excited about the launch, adding that the service was expected to promote medical tourism in India.

“The daily service is also expected to cater to significant traffic including business and leisure travellers and students to and from the technology hub in southern India,” Tan said here Thursday.

With the launch, Bangalore has become the seventh destination in India for AirAsia after Thiruvananthapuram, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi, Tiruchirapalli and Mumbai.

Gorkha League chief Madan Tamang killed, Darjeeling tense

Darjeeling, May 21 (IANS) Gorkha leader Madan Tamang, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL), was Friday stabbed to death allegedly by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in this West Bengal town, police said. News of the death led to a spontaneous shutdown in the region.

Tamang, who led the anti-GJM front in the Darjeeling hills, was hit with a kukri (long knife used by Nepalis) at around 9.30 a.m., an official said.

“He was critically injured in the attack and died in the Darjeeling District Hospital,” Darjeeling police station inspector-in-charge Indrajit Thapa told IANS.

State Municipal Affairs Minister Ashok Bhattacharya said in Kolkata that GJM supporters had carried out the attack on Tamang.

“The GJM’s goons have committed the murder. GJM is a fascist party, which does not want any opposition in the hills. They are opposed to a democratic atmosphere prevailing in the hills,” he said.

“We are deeply concerned. The hills are very tense,” said Bhattacharya, who hails from Siliguri in Darjeeling district.

As news of Tamang’s killing spread, a spontaneous shutdown began in the three Darjeeling hill sub-divisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong.

Vehicles in Darjeeling went off the roads, while shops and markets were closed.

On hearing about the attack on Tamang, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee convened an emergency meeting at the state secretariat Writers’ Buildings here and directed police and administrative officials to take all measures to keep the situation under control.

Tamang, a vocal opponent of the GJM, had earlier levelled corruption charges against its chief Bimal Gurung. The GJM had then threatened to banish him from the hills.

Web abuzz over facebook ban in Pakistan

Posted: 20 May 2010 04:36 PM PDT

Islamabad, May 21 (IANS) The web is abuzz over the ban on social networking site Facebook in Pakistan following the Prophet cartoon row. While some favour a clamp down, others say: ‘Why should everyone get punished for 1 or 2 person’s mistake’.

Webpages have sprung up on Facebook after ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!’ was set up.

A Pakistani court had Wednesday ordered the government to temporarily block Facebook after a controversy over a competition for caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.

Pakistan has also blocked the video-sharing website YouTube because of its ‘growing sacrilegious contents’.

A statement from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said that YouTube and Facebook websites were blocked after the government failed to convince them to remove ‘derogatory material’.

A webpage called ‘Ban FACEBOOK in Pakistan’ has been set up ‘to condemn the hypocrisy of FACEBOOK. As it won’t delete the hate mongering page called ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!’.

Izhar Khan wrote on the page: ‘I Quit Facebook from today…Sorry my friends….but will cath u somewhere else.. Insha-ALLAH’.

But there are others who don’t want a ban of facebook.

The creator of the page ‘Only ban the Disrespecting Group and not the facebook in Pakistan’ says: ‘Why should everyone get punished for 1 or 2 person’s mistake. Please be fair and take step to do something right so join this group and lets try and make a difference.’

Protests took place across Pakistan Thursday over the Prophet’s cartoon row.

In Islamabad, religious leaders issued a decree calling for the killing of the ‘blasphemous cartoonist’ while in Rawalpindi, hundreds of activists from the women’s wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) staged a protest demonstration. They demanded that the government should end economic and diplomatic relations with all those countries who are involved in it.

The protesters held placards saying, ‘We will accept death in slavery of Prophet (SAW), the competitors are the real terrorists’, ‘We love our Prophet (SAW) more than our forefathers’, The News International reported.

Jamiat Ulema Pakistan, Tahffuz Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz, Anti Facebook Movement, Muhammadia Students Movement, International Tanzim-e-Ahle Sunnat and Muttahida Tehrik-e-Khatum-e Nubuwat Committee demonstrated in front of the Lahore Press Club and Punjab Assembly.

The lawyers community also observed a strike on the Punjab Bar Council’s call against Facebook. The lawyers boycotted the court proceedings in civil and session courts and lawyers did not attend the court proceedings in the Lahore High Court after 10.30 a.m.

Social organisations, religious bodies and NGOs of Sialkot have announced that they would observe Friday as a protest day.

In Quetta, thousands of activists of the Islami Jamiat-e-Tulba Balochistan chapter took out a rally against the planned contest of blasphemous caricatures on Facebook, demanding the UN to take immediate notice.

Violent demonstrations had erupted in 2006 in Pakistan over the publication of cartoons on the Prophet Mohammed in Danish newspapers Jyllands-Posten and Politiken.

Last week, Pakistan refused to renew the visa of a Jyllands-Posten correspondent, forcing him to leave the country.

Hitler in pink posters cause storm in Italy

Posted: 20 May 2010 04:36 PM PDT

London, May 21 (IANS) Huge posters of Hitler wearing a lurid pink uniform with a love heart, instead of swastika, on his arm band have whipped up a storm in Italy.

The posters, which are 18 feet high, are for a line of clothing for young people and they have been prominently set up in Palermo city.

They show Hitler wearing a bright pink uniform above the slogan ‘Change Style – Don’t Follow Your Leader’, The Telegraph reported Friday.

Local people have found the posters offensive and demanded that they be removed.

‘The use of an image of a person responsible for the worst chapters of the last century is offensive to our country’s constitutional principles and to the sensitivities of citizens,’ Rosario Filoramo, a city councillor, was quoted as saying.

Fabrizio Ferrandelli, an official, said: ‘Having Hitler’s face on a poster… cannot be passed off as an innocent advertising message. Seeing these posters in front of schools is an embarrassment.’

Daniele Manno, who works for the advertising agency running the campaign, said the Hitler poster was a tongue-in-cheek way of encouraging people not to follow the crowd in their fashion choices.

He added: ‘We have ridiculed Hitler in a way that invites young people to create their own style and not to be influenced by their peers.’
