Peepli Live Turning True In Nepal

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 03:50 AM PDT

Peepli Live Turning True In NepalAs the audience wonders whether Natha, the poor farmer from Peepli village, will kill himself to save his family and land in Aamir Khan's latest hit production "Peepli Live", it is much more than just a story in Nepal.

"Peepli Live" is alarmingly coming alive in the country, impoverished by centuries of exploitative kings and prime ministers, a series of failed governments and a 10-year civil war that has emptied out entire villages of young people.

As debutante director Anusha Rizvi's accolade-winning film opened in Nepal's theatres Aug 13, the nation, in a sombre coincidence, is mulling over two suicides that have shaken people already familiar with death, disaster and injustice.

The first occurred Aug 13 itself when a 35-year-old woman, abandoned by her husband and unable to provide for her two children, first threw them into a river to die and then set herself on fire.

The second suicide was still more stunning with the victim being the son of a peasant leader who had taken part in an earlier uprising in eastern Nepal.

Shambhu Rajbanshi killed himself in Nepal's tea garden district of Jhapa Sunday after years of frustration. Four months ago, his father Digendra Rajbanshi had hanged himself in the headquarters of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist, Nepal's ruling party.

Digendra Rajbanshi, a member of the party, was a peasant leader who mobilised people during the popular uprising against Nepal's oligarchical Rana rule in 1950. He had been arrested and jailed for almost a decade.

But despite his contribution, the peasant leader's bitter complaint was that the party had abandoned him and others like him. He had been seeking a job for his son but to no avail.

While Nepal's media hailed "Peepli Live" as a film worth watching, veteran journalist and columnist Gunaraj Luitel said its message was meant for Nepal as well.

"The crisis is not just (for) Indian farmers," Luitel wrote in his weekly column in the Nagarik daily.

"The state of our farmers is no different. They work all through the year and yet their sweat doesn't even bring them enough to eat. The peasant is losing his rights to the giant corporations and big investors. He can't buy seeds and fertiliser at a subsidy and doesn't get a fair price for his produce."

"Yet there is no one to speak on his behalf. There are many villages called Piple in Nepal too and many farmers there are in the same plight."

Nitin Mukesh to sing for son Neil

Nitin Mukesh to sing for son NeilSinger Nitin Mukesh hasn't sung Bollywood songs for quite a while now but says he wouldn't mind making a comeback for his actor-son Neil Nitin Mukesh.

"I don't sing any more in films. I only perform live on stage. The scene has changed. My style of things is very rare but I will sing for Neil hopefully," Nitin Mukesh told IANS here.

Like any father, Nitin Mukesh too dreams of his son becoming the top actor of Bollywood but adds that the youngster is a good singer too.

"He is a damn good singer. I want to see him happy and at the top in whatever he chooses; that's all. I know he has a passion for acting and I want to see him as the top actor of the country. He will sing once he has achieved his goal. Singing also needs lots of attention," said Nitin Mukesh, who has lent his voice to songs like "So Gaya Yeh Jahan" ("Tezaab") "My name is Lakhan" ("Ram Lakhan").

The proud dad says he gets very tense when his son has to do daring stunts, like he's done in upcoming film "Lafangey Parindey". Nitin Mukesh says now Neil doesn't tell him when he's doing edge-of-the seat action.

"He doesn't tell me anything now because I get worried. I stay awake the whole night because it keeps bothering me. During 'Johnny Gaddaar', he didn't know that I would be so scared and after that he stopped telling me. He tells me after he is done with it," the singer said.

Asked if he drives the new Mercedes Neil has gifted him, Nitin Mukesh said: "I don't drive. I left driving 10-15 years ago. He (Neil) knows that papa won't allow anyone to touch his Mercedes so he drives whenever I have to go anywhere in it. He is a damn good son and a very nice child."

Salman Khan and his police connection

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 12:00 AM PDT

Salman Khan and his police connection Bollywood hunk Salman Khan, who is once again playing a cop in his brother Arbaaz Khan's debut production "Dabangg", says he has a special connect with police as his grandfather was a police officer and, of course, due to his own run-ins with the law.

"I think because my grandfather was deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Indore, I have this special thing for the cops. I have also shared a very long relationship...!" Salman told IANS with a laugh.

The actor spent time in jail in 2002 after his car allegedly ran over four people sleeping on a footpath. He once again went behind bars in 2007 in Jodhpur on charges of hunting an endangered deer.

Salman, 44, has played a policeman in several films like "Wanted", "Garv" and "Auzaar".

He started out in 1988 with the film "Biwi Ho To Aisi". Salman gets philosophical when he says a star's image is something created by others and if an actor himself starts believing in that image, then he is done for.

"When you think that you are a normal person, you are not a star; then you don't get impressed by your image that 150, 200 or 500 people have created and crores of people have appreciated that image; if you don't believe in that image of yours and you know for a fact that is not you but a created thing, you will be fine. If you start believing in that image of yours, then you are done with," Salman told IANS in an interview.

Known for his beefed up muscles, the actor said he lost weight for "Dabangg".

"I lost a lot of weight and then it looked weird. You are playing a cop who is totally ribbed. I really wanted to look ribbed in the film," said Salman.

Salman had grown his hair for "Veer", a look he really liked, and now he sports a moustache for the new flick, which also stars Shatrughan Sinha's daughter Sonakshi. He admits he was a bit apprehensive about going for an image makeover this time.

"I had just finished 'Veer' and I had to cut my hair very short... I didn't want to. The long hair was looking good. It took so long to grow them; so I didn't want anyone to cut them off."

About the moustache, Salman said: "Five-six months before the film, Arbaaz used to come with different kinds of moustaches every week. I said I'm shooting for a film, can I grow a moustache...Somewhere Sonakshi also had this thing for her dad's moustache. If you see my moustache, it's somewhat like his only," he laughed.

Funnily, Salman is seen doing some really weird dance steps in the songs of "Dabangg". Why is that?

"Actually in this film, I copied everyone who can't dance. There is a nightclub-dancing style, there is one dancing style when you are in a function, and one dance is when you are drunk and enjoying yourself. This film is dedicated especially to those people who can't dance," Salman told IANS.
