Dr. Alexander Vorontsov – Brookings Institution – North Korea & Russia

Posted: 29 Sep 2010 11:42 AM PDT

Dr. Alexander Voronstov recently spoke on a panel at UC San Francisco about relations between North Korea and Russia and that relationship’s in Asia.

Dr. Volontsov pointed out that a key to maintaining public relations with North Korea is to go through the Russian Federation.

There are several reason for this -

1. Russia is working to connect a gas pipe line with South Korea through North Korea.

2. Dear Kim (cough cough) loves chorus music and accepts regular visits from Russian groups.

3. Every month there are meetings between Kim and the Russian Ambassador at the Russian Embassy in Pyongyang.

4. North Korean students regularly study in Russia and can be a foundation for future good relations.

Hmmm…indeed. Good and strong relations can be established by the most indirect means. Would you agree? And that can be good for business in Russia, Korea and Asia.

Dr. Vorontsov emphasized that it is the Russian policy goal to see the nuclearization of North Korea happen in a peaceful way and that nuclear weapons are unacceptable to Russia.

Further, Dr. Vorontsov mentioned that Russia would like to see, and here’s a great word – the democratization and peaceful transformation of North Korea.

Do you think it is possible? Can Russia accomplish this? Why can or can we not trust Russia?

What do you think?

How to decide when Easter is

Posted: 29 Sep 2010 07:42 AM PDT

How to decide/know when Easter is

This is a problem for most folks who don’t know how to look at a calendar and read. That’s what I usually do.

However, every year I still wonder, when’s Easter going to be this year?

Believe it or not, the U.S. Naval Observatory, among others, has an opinion on when Easter will fall each year.

And the opinion differs on whether or not you are going by the Gregorian Calendar or by the astronomical Full Moon for the meridian of Jerusalem. Huh?

The end result is that in the West, those who use the Gregorian calendar, the celebration of Easter is one week different from when it is celebrated in the East where they go by the Julian calendar.

If you’d like to be thoroughly confused, details here.

For those who like to plan ahead -

The following are dates of Easter from 1980 to 2024:

1980 April 6 1995 April 16 2010 April 4 1981 April 19 1996 April 7 2011 April 24 1982 April 11 1997 March 30 2012 April 8 1983 April 3 1998 April 12 2013 March 31 1984 April 22 1999 April 4 2014 April 20 1985 April 7 2000 April 23 2015 April 5 1986 March 30 2001 April 15 2016 March 27 1987 April 19 2002 March 31 2017 April 16 1988 April 3 2003 April 20 2018 April 1 1989 March 26 2004 April 11 2019 April 21 1990 April 15 2005 March 27 2020 April 12 1991 March 31 2006 April 16 2021 April 4 1992 April 19 2007 April 8 2022 April 17 1993 April 11 2008 March 23 2023 April 9 1994 April 3 2009 April 12 2024 March 31

Or, you can just make a point of it to buy a calendar each year and look in March in April to see where it is.

When America Catches a Cold

Posted: 29 Sep 2010 03:40 AM PDT

It is said in Japan that when America catches a cold, Japan sneezes.

What is meant by that, is whenever something is popular in America, it won’t take long before it catches on in Japa or before Japan imitates it or often makes it even better.

Well, Japan has sneezed. Ah choo! or as the Japanese say hakuchon!

Sony is introducing a new digital walkman http://products.sony.co.uk/walkman_hd.asp

It was Sony’s original walkman that created a revolutionary music lifestyle. However, as early as January of this year, Apple had 45% of the Japanese market for digital music players, vs. 15% for Sony. Just one month before the new Walkman’s intro into the market the ration was Apple 53% and Sony 11%. That’s a big change.

Hasn’t it always been that America could create something and the Japanese would improve on it? Is this another example.

What do you think?

200.8 meter wedding dress (pic)

Posted: 28 Sep 2010 11:40 PM PDT

A Chinese dude contracted a local tailor to make a wedding gown for his bride with a train stretching 200.8 meters.

200.8…remind you of anything?

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

The marriage, however, will take place nearly a year before and in in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The previous record for a wedding dress train…99 meters.

By the time the wedding train gets into the chapel…the marriage ceremony will be over.

When do you think too much is too much?
