Four Most Popluar Languages Studied in Japanese High Schools Other than English

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 10:56 AM PDT

English is offered in every high school and jr high school in Japan. But some high schools offer other languages as well.

The four most popular languages studied in Japanese high schools other than English are:

4. German – offered in 99 high schools.

3. French – offered in 231 high schools.

2. Korean – offered in 247 high schools. This is an excellent step toward improving the relationship between these two countries. It might take a generation or two…but it will be done, if real people from the bottom up learned to communicate in one another’s language.

1. Chinese – offered in 481 high schools. This, too, is an excellent step if accompanied with home stays and visits to one another’s countries.

I wonder how many high schools in China and Korea offer courses in Japanese?

I had one Chinese friend who studied in Japanese in China. She came to Japan to study, got a PhD and is now teaching Chinese to Japanese and making a big difference in the long run.

Countries can’t go wrong when its citizens are learning each other’s language.

What do you think?

Supreme Court defers Ayodhya verdict by a week till September 28th 2010

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:05 AM PDT

In a latest development The Indian Supreme Court today has deffered the Ayodhya verdict by at least week. The verdict was to be delivered tomorrow. The matter was heard by a Bench headed by Justice R V Raveendran.

The Indian Express reports
“Apex court issues notices to contesting parties on the petition
seeking stay on the Allahabad High Court order, which refused to defer
the verdict in the suit.”

“The apex court had on Wednesday declined to hear urgently the plea
to postpone the Ayodhya title suit verdict by the Allahabad High Court
on Friday.”

Tripathi said the verdict could flare up communal tension and that
both the central and state governments were ill-equipped to handle a
law-and-order situation because of the pressures of the Commonwealth
Games, the Bihar elections, the floods and violence in Kashmir and
Naxal-hit areas.

A Bench of the court, while refusing to hear the petition filed by
retired bureaucrat Ramesh Chand Tripathi, said that it did not have the
“determination” to take up the issue and added that it will be listed
before another Bench.

The demand to defer the verdict was admitted under Section 89 of the Civil Procedure Code.

Tripathi approached the apex court five days after a three-judge
Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court rejected his petition to defer
the verdict and allow mediation to find a solution to the 60-year-old
Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit dispute.

The High Court had also imposed “exemplary costs” of Rs 50,000,
terming Tripathi’s efforts for an out-of-court settlement of the dispute
as a “mischievous attempt”.

The Kanpur district administration has imposed Section 144 in the region after taking September 24 Ayodhya Verdict into consideration. The High Court of Allahabad will be announcing its verdict on the land issue tomorrow that is September 24, 2010.

The Joint Magistrate and Sub divisional Magistrate of Kanpur, Saumya Agarwal declared that carrying firearms, sharp-edged weapons like swords, daggers, knives bigger than 5 cm, sticks will be prohibited in the region.

But the people who are handicapped or those who cannot walk without sticks will remain exempted from this clause of Section 144.
