Shilpa Shetty, Chitrangada Singh sizzles at Fashion WeekShilpa Shetty, Chitrangada Singh sizzles at Fashion WeekIn the backdrop of a majestic white set, showstoppers Shilpa Shetty and Chitrangada Singh sashayed the ramp as designer Tarun Tahiliani brought the curtains down on the latest edition of Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week with a grand show.

Two larger than life trees were fabricated at the entry of the ramp and the show area was lit with orange, green, blue, red and yellow lights. The entire ramp was made of white jute while the ceilings were draped with white stripes.

Even though it was the grand finale, Tarun stuck to what he is best at -- contemporary designs with western silhouettes.

"Tarun has been like family to me. He is absolutely adorable. What is the best thing I like about him is that he brings out a new avatar in me every time and I love to walk for him," said Shilpa who looked stunning in a white lehenga and a net blouse.

On the other hand, actress Chitrangada set the ramp on fire as she walked in a silk blush gauze saree encrusted with crystallised elements.

Tarun's collection titled "New Democracy", aimed at providing a new direction to India's textiles, prints, fabrics, weaves and colours.

"As we get westernised, our Indianness is getting lost somewhere. My collection is an attempt to bring it back with the use of Indian handlooms and drapes," said Tarun.

"My inspiration has never been wealthy women. I get inspired by the poor or those on streets, because that's where you find the real Indianness," he added.

The collection included a range of kaftans, sarees, dresses, skirts, Jodhpuri trousers, churidars and lehengas. A turban and odhani fall enhanced the entire look of the line donned by the models on the ramp.

While fabrics included silk chiffons, voile, georgette and satin, the colour palette had hues and tints of sand, ivory, beige, taupe and charcoal. The collection also saw a lot of bandhani appliques and chikankari work.

The show came to an end with a thunderous applause as models danced to live music played by Sufi singers.

Akon's performance banned in Australia

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 02:45 AM PDT

Akon's performance banned in AustraliaR&B star Akon has been banned from performing at a gig in Melbourne after his 2009 concert in the city was marred by violence.

The singer was due to play at the Summerbeatz festival in the Rod Laver Arena Nov 25, but bosses at the venue have forbidden the star from going ahead with the show following last year's gig brawl, reports contactmusic.com.

Akon was performing at Melbourne's HiSense Arena as part of his co-headlining show with T-Pain last October when rival gangs began fighting, prompting the singer to halt the event.

At least 18 people, including two security guards, received medical treatment while nine were taken to hospital following the riots and Akon has now been forced to miss Melbourne out of his Australian tour, which kicks off next month.

The star's music promoter Dwayne Cross says in a statement: "Akon will not be performing in Melbourne on the Summerbeatz 2010 Tour. This is due to restrictions put on us by the Melbourne venue Rod Laver Arena. We have toured Akon in Australia many times before and we are extremely disappointed that Melbourne misses out on seeing such an amazing and popular performer, however, this situation is completely out of our hands."

The Melbourne show will go ahead with Ciara, Jay Sean, Travis MCCoy and Soulja Boy among the stars headlining.

Vivek Oberoi considers Priyanka Alva his anchor

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 02:38 AM PDT

Vivek Oberoi considers Priyanka Alva his anchorVivek Oberoi, who will tie the knot with Priyanka Alva Friday, is so much in love with his wife-to-be that he has started penning poetry about her.

One of his poems to Priyanka reads - "In a world of only two people who are each other's world…"

"I don't know how you got that, but those are my lines to her," said Vivek, 34.

"We've discovered a whole universe in each other's life. I've found the love of my life. It was an arranged-cum-love-'zyada' marriage. Every day with her is a blessing. In a world full of storms, she's my anchor. I live in a world of masks. I needed someone as real as she is. She is my home. She's the one I can come home to me. She has changed my life," he said.

Vivek, who entered Bollywood with Ram Gopal Varma's "Company" in 2002, was earlier engaged to model-turned-entrepreneur Gurpreet Gill. But they broke off and later the actor was linked to Aishwarya Rai.

Though Priyanka's father is no more, her mother adores Vivek, who is the son of seasoned actor Suresh Oberoi.

"She's (Vivek's mother-in-law-to-be) a major exponent of art. Our two families have been friends for years. And if I may say so, my family has earned great respect and dignity beyond cinema.

"Even on a personal level, it has taken me a long time to overcome the cynicism about my work outside movies. If you are sincere about what you do, respect finally has to come your way," said the actor who was recently seen in the biopic on slain factionist-turned-politician Paritala Ravi in "Rakta Charitra".

Begum Nawazish Ali: India can provide me better opportunities

Posted: 28 Oct 2010 02:33 AM PDT

Begum Nawazish Ali: India can provide me better opportunitiesPakistan's cross-dressing talk-show host Begum Nawazish Ali, who was hastened out of Mumbai to avoid a Shiv Sena backlash soon after being evicted from "Bigg Boss" house, says she would love to return as she can find better job opportunities here.

"At the moment Pakistan is plagued with problems. Entertainment is not a priority there. I am an entertainer and India can provide me with lots of work. If I get work, of course, I'll return," said Begum before leaving for Pakistan Saturday.

Ali Saleem, the Begum of TV show, said he was surprised when he found that Shiv Sena was targeting him and fellow Pakistani Veena Mallik for featuring in "Bigg Boss 4".

"I did hear about it. It surprised me. I saw no logic behind this kind of a protest. I didn't choose to be born in Pakistan. It's something that just happened to me. If I was born in Mumbai, I'd have been an Indian," he said.

Excerpts from interview:

Q: What are your plans?

A: As soon as I came out of "Bigg Boss", I went to a friend's house in Mumbai. In the morning, I returned to my hotel in an auto-rickshaw. This evening (Saturday) I leave Mumbai.

Q: You should have stayed a while?

A: I don't think the channel wants me to, not after the Shiv Sena's protests. I'm going back home, I'm missing my mom. I've been completely cut off inside "Bigg Boss". When I came out of the house, they didn't allow me to talk to my family until very late in the night. I got a mobile phone at 1 a.m. At that time I woke up my mom and dad. Both my parents had been watching me on "Bigg Boss" and were very proud of me.

Q: When you came out of "Bigg Boss", you must have heard of the political campaign to get you out of the country?

A: I did hear about it. It surprised me. I saw no logic behind this kind of a protest. Both Veena Malik and I were inside the house not as representatives of any country but as players in a game show. I didn't choose to be born in Pakistan. It's something that just happened to me. If I was born in Mumbai, I'd have been an Indian. Sixtythree years ago we were one nation. Why do we waste so much time in negativity?

Q: Do you plan to return to India?

A: I'd love to. I don't like to mince my words. At the moment Pakistan is plagued with problems. Entertainment is not a priority there. I am an entertainer and India can provide me with lots of work. When I come to India, I don't come as a Pakistani. I come here as an actor. If I get work, of course, I'll return.

Q: Was there a solidarity between you and Veena Malik in the "Bigg Boss" house?

A: Both Veena and I are from Pakistan and we're both from television. But we've met only two-three times. But obviously when you're abroad, then meeting someone from home means a lot. Even as a person I like Veena a lot. She's frank and she said what she had to in front of you. She isn't two-faced.

Q: You've a strong feminine side to your personality. Why did you choose to focus on the masculine side inside the "Bigg Boss" house?

A: I was born a man. But to become 'Begum' needs elaborate preparation. I need a whole team of people to dress me up.

Q: Are you saying Begum is just a character you play?

A: No, she is a part of me. But she's very high-maintenance.

Q: Is it difficult maintaining a bi-sexual life in a conservative society like Pakistan?

A: Not at all. Contrary to belief, Pakistan is not such a conservative country. I'm free to lead my life how I choose to.

Q: You live with your parents in Pakistan?

A: My parents are separated. I live with my mother in Islamabad. My father lives in Karachi. I spend a lot of time doing my television work in Karachi. When I'm there, I stay with my father. But my bonding with my mother is unique.

Q: Do you have a love life?

A: I had a love life. Now I am going to a normal life.
