Extreme cold temperatures claim seven lives in northern India

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:02 AM PST

After extreme cold temperatures in Delhi claiming a total of seven lives till now, the temperature has gone back to normal to 10 degrees. Though the capital is now experiencing a cozy temperature, there was no change in the temperatures in Chandigarh and Narnaul, Haryana, with 5.3 and 1.5 degrees respectively.

While the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar had experienced the coldest night with a freezing temperature of 6.6 degrees. The Dal lake in Kashmir is right now partially frozen.

The cold temperatures also did not spare the desert state of Rajasthan with a minimum temperature recorded of 2.3 degrees in Sriganganagar. The capital was slightly relieved of fog on Tuesday morning. The visibility at the Delhi airport improved to 1600 metres.

Most of the flights in the airport were as per schedule. Though one of the flights was delayed and another was cancelled. However the delay and cancellation was not due to the reason of fog. Some international flights were delayed due to the snow storms in Europe.

Pune Bandh declared by Shiv Sena activists

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 03:00 AM PST

The Shiv Sena activists in Pune have called for a 'Bandh'(closure) in the city on Tuesday. The Bandh has been called in protest of the removal of the statue of Dadaji Konddev, who was considered as the 'Guru' (teacher) of the great warrior Chatrapati Shivaji.

The protestors pelted stones on public properties like buses, which left 8 of them damaged. However the police took into custody many of the protestors as a preventive measure to avoid any kind of riot.

Attempts were also made by the activists to block the rail traffic on the Mumbai-Pune section of the central railway. According to sources the Sinhgad Express which runs between Mumbai and Pune was stopped by the protestors at Lonavala.

The removal of the statue had become the reason for the dispute after the pro-Maratha outfit Sambhaji Brigade, demanded the removal of the statue from the Mahal. The removal was demanded after the publication of the controversial book by the American author James Laine.

5 Reasons Why Chinese Cars Will Get Cheaper

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 03:39 PM PST

Made in China means cheap…as in economical…but also cheap in quality, too, for that matter.

'Made in China' cars will soon have that discount price to go with them.

Here are five reasons why:

1. It's the end of the year. Every car company wants to post their best annual sales figures.price-war.jpg

2. China has turned out on average 10 new car models each month this year. A glut of car types will lead to price competition.

3. That same glut of NEW cars will lead dealers to do their darndest to get rid of old models….at bargain prices.

4. On-Board Dynamics – OBD – is a system that controls engine functions and diagnoses engine trouble. Dealers want to sell cars without the OBD before they become mandatory this month in Beijing and next month in Guangzhou.

Ah, price wars…for cars…how long has it been since that happened in the U.S?

At any rate, it's good news for the new car customer in China, no?

What do you think?

When the Lord Fights – Wisdom from the Good Book

When Pharaoh and his army chased the Israelites, the Israelites ran into a dead end at the Red Sea.

Much has been made of this. And lots of explanations have been put forward about God, via Moses, parting the Red Sea.

One of which was the Sea was at a low ebb in its season and it didn't really happen. The Israelites just walked through the ankle deep sea.

If so, it might have been a greater miracle that all the Egyptian army drowned in an ankle deep sea, eh?

Point – we need not explain God's miracles. A miracle is a miracle. It's supernatural, above explanation.

Point – when God fights for His people, God wins.

What American Professors Can Learn from the Chinese

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 07:37 AM PST

"The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has warned its academicians against commercially endorsing products, activities or services."

China thinks that "With their contributions to the progress of science and technology, academicians could be deeply influential with the public."

American academicians thing THAT is WHY they should endorse products…especially with the money that can follow.

The beef is that Chinese academicians exploit their prestige to:

1. expand commerical activities

2. gain commercial advantages

3. act as 'image ambassadors'

4. use their names in endorsements

5. seek improper profits

So, if a prof is a public servant working at a public university, should the money they make as a result from this work be given back to the public?

Half of Chinese-Americans are Ready to Fight if Taiwan Claims Independence

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 03:35 AM PST

A poll was conducted of 354 Chinese Americans who were chosen at random nationwide by from a surname list.

They were asked a series of questions about their attitudes toward China and their views on China and US-China Relations.

Question 13:

If a declaration of independence by Taiwan leads to hostilities, should the US commit military forces to defend Taiwan?

Almost half (45%) of Chinese-Americans said "Yes." But they didn’t say which side they would be on.

Just under one third (32%) of the war-weary general public are ready to fight.

Nobody wants to fight any more. I am surprised that so many Chinese-Americans thought it was worth fighting over.

Why do you think that is?

These survey results were taken from a poll conducted by the Committee of 100.

The Committee of 100 is a national, nonpartisan organization composed of prominent American citizens of Chinese descent.  The members of this group pool their resources to address important issues that concern the Chinese/American community but, imho, more importantly foster better US-Greater China relations.

Recently, this group tasked the polling firm ZOGBY to conduct an extensive survey of American Attitudes Toward China.

They polled the General Population (General Public) as well as Chinese Americans. Business leaders, Opinion leaders and Congressional staffers, subsets of the general public were also polled.

In keeping with the Committee of 100 ideals I hope it will create discussion and be used to better understand U.S.-China relations and help those concerned to formulate recommendations on how to improve relationships between these two great countries.
