Alisha Chinai says playback singing ridiculous

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 10:57 PM PST

Alisha Chinai says playback singing ridiculous Mumbai, Dec 20 (IANS) Singer Alisha Chinai, with chartbusters like "Kajra re" ("Bunty Aur Babli") and "Tera hone laga hoon" ("Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani") to her name, thinks playback singing is ridiculous and says she can't do it any more at any cost.

"Aishwarya and Katrina are beautiful women. But sorry, I didn't enjoy watching them pretending to sing my songs 'Kajra re' and 'Tera hone laga'. My God! It's so ridiculous! Would you ever see Julia Robert singing in Madonna's voice? Over here this practice of ghost voices just spooks me out, man. I can't do it, sorry," she said.

Alisha's latest grievance over the tradition of ghost voices is the chartbuster "Munni badnaam hui."

"Who knows it is sung by Mamta Sharma? Everyone sees it as Malaika's song," protests Alisha.

So what's her solution?

"I've none. I can't fight the system. For years and years, the heroines have been walking away with the credit for songs sung by us playback singers. Today things have come to such a pathetic and sorry state for playback singers that no one knows the singers' identity any more. Who knows I sang 'Tera hone laga' for Katrina and 'It's rocking' and 'Bebo main bebo' for Kareena? In fact, many people think they sang these numbers!" she said.

Alisha finds this continual neglect of playback singers degrading and thoroughly unacceptable.

"I've told my manager not to even entertain any offers for playback singing. I can't do it. In the past, I saw Sridevi walk away with all the raves for my song 'Kaate nahin kat-te' in 'Mr. India'. It hurt then, it hurts more now. I'd rather sit at home jobless than allow my talent to be used to further any actress' popularity," a livid Alisha said.

Alisha said she hoped to revive the era of non-film albums.

"I know I'm being unrealistic, but I can't help it. Either I'll sing in non-film albums or otherwise let the singer also do music videos of songs that heroines lip-sync on screen. I know other singers just sing their songs, take the peanuts offered as remuneration and go home. I can't do that. I won't be exploited in this way. Pay me and give me my due credit. Or I am out of here," she said.

Ajay devgan, Kajol came together due to my song: Anu Malik

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 10:29 PM PST

Ajay devgan, Kajol came together due to my song: Anu MalikMumbai, Dec 21 (IANS) Bollywood music director Anu Malik feels a strong bond with stars Kajol and Ajay Devgn, so much so that he believes his songs might be the reason the couple fell in love.

"I don't know whether I'm Kajol's lucky mascot or she is mine but we have had some great hits. I feel a karmic connection with Kajol and Ajay," Malik told IANS.

"They never admit to this, but I have a strong suspicion that it was my song 'I am 16' in the film 'Hulchul' starring the couple that brought them together. They'll never say it, how they fell in love, but they were magical in that song and I think it all started from there," he added.

Malik has composed for Kajol in films like "Baazigar", "Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain" and "Hulchul" while for Ajay he as composed in "Vijaypath" and "Diljale".

Now after many years he has given music for their film "Toonpur Ka Superhero", which is a live action animation film.

The 50-year-old, who has given many chartbuster scores in films like "Main Khiladi Tu Anari", "Akele Hum Akele Tum", "Judwaa", "Border", "Refugee" and "Main Hoon Na", revealed that giving music for this film was extremely challenging.

"This has been a very close and special film for me as a creative person in the last 32 years of my career. It's not a very easy project to compose music for."
`
"This was a challenge for me. The fact as to how do I compose a theme that is hummable? How do I keep the theme of the film alive? These factors were roving in my mind. So getting that right was a task," he said.

The film, directed by Kireet Khurana, is slated to hit screens Dec 24. It includes six tracks, four of which have been used in the film.

According to the composer, people start judging very soon; so it's possible that they find the soundtrack different, but that's how it was supposed to be made.

"People start judging very soon. They may not like the soundtrack; I'm open to criticism but it's very important for people to understand that all these are situation-based songs, hence different," he expressed.

"We cannot have an item number or a love song because the situations don't demand them," he added.

Asked how important sound was for an animation film, he said: "Sound is very important for an animation film because it conveys a lot. It adds a lot to the film. It's just that the sound has to be exactly what the director has conceived; then it will be more effective."

Shah Rukh Khan says I went into depression, but am back

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 10:20 PM PST

Shah Rukh Khan says I went into depression, but am backMumbai, Dec 21 (IANS) Shah Rukh Khan says he had gone into a depression mode but is now back and full of energy. The 45-year-old superstar also believes he is very poor at expressing his innermost feelings, be it love, anger or friendship.

"I feel so much healthy and refreshed from within - due to the injury and the suffering I had got into a depression mode but now I am out of it. I feel happy and boosted with energy," Shah Rukh told IANS in an interview here. The actor tore a ligament in his shoulder during shooting in 2008 and underwent surgery early last year.

When asked how he copes with the controversies and comparisons, Shah Rukh said he lacked in the art of expression, which is often misinterpreted by the masses.

"I am a different person in my films; I am very vocal and expressive in them, but in my personal life I am a very weird person. I face difficulty when I have to express my innermost feelings. I am very shy, quiet and reclusive as an individual.

"It is not something I am proud of but I lack in the art of expressing my love, my friendship, my anger, my apologies, which people misinterpret at times.

"I am always compared; that is a part of my life. A newcomer comes I am compared; anybody does a film which is a bigger hit, I am compared; anybody does a lesser film, still I am compared. So comparisons don't bother me now."

He is all set to make his small screen comeback with "Zor Ka Jhatka" on Imagine TV, for which he will begin shooting in the new year.

"I started my career from TV when I was nothing; it is a medium which is very close to my heart and now I feel excited to be back on it again."

Shah Rukh made his acting debut in 1988 with the television series "Fauji". After that he went on to appear in several other television serials, most notably in Aziz Mirza's 1989 series "Circus".

King Khan, who has hosted shows like "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (2007) and "Kya Aap Paanchvi Pass Se Tez Hain?" (2008), says TV is his personal favourite.

"I have worked on all the different platforms, be it theatre, films, TV - but genuinely, TV is my favourite."

He, however, feels he lacks knowledge of the television industry. "On many occasions I find myself lacking as far as TV knowledge is concerned. I am not very well-versed with the working of the industry, the terms and terminology of it; so I try to stay away from it," Shah Rukh said.

"When I stand among people from the TV industry, I feel awkward. I feel as if I don't know what they are saying," he said.

He has spent two successful decades in the film industry.

Shah Rukh made his Bollywood debut with "Deewana" (1992) and since then has worked in films like "Baazigar", "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Devdas", "Swades", "Chak De! India" and "My Name Is Khan".

And he says he is an original.

"I am the origin and original of what I do. I am the truth and lie of what I do. I am the goodness and the badness of what I do. Twenty years on, when you work the way I have with a lot of integrity and honesty, these kind of thoughts don't come to me.

"It would be very odious and wrong for me to say that I could be ever compared in a pompous sense - it would be wrong for me to say I'm incomparable, but I think it is right to say that I don't like to be compared at all.

"I am not the number one star for myself because I try harder every day; I have always believed that I haven't done the best and could have done better. The day I stop doing that I will stop working."

Asked about his current movie projects, he said, "I am working on quite a few projects as of now. I am in the mode to work round the clock with television and films. I am currently shooting for 'Ra.One', 'Don-2', and Vishal Bharadwaj's film which is an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's 'Two States'."

So what is his selection criterion for scripts?

"I try to keep myself on the other side when I sit to take a decision. I think about it with a third person perspective. I take up projects which I find appealing and grow my interest in them. 'If I like it, others will also like it' - this is how my mind works."
