Brother of Chinese man sentenced to life for evading tolls confesses

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 07:35 AM PST

Henan Province, China

The brother of a man who was given a life sentence for evading highway tolls in China has come forward to confess that he was the actual culprit.

On Saturday evening, Shi Junfeng surrendered to the authorities in Yuzhou City, Henan province.  Shi Junfeng insisted that it was he, and not his brother who was responsible for placing the military license plates on their truck.

The ruse, while it lasted, helped Shi avoid paying 3.7 million yuan ($550,00) in road tolls.   Military vehicles are exempt from paying tolls.

Many Chinese complain that highway tolls are too high.

The brother who was convicted, Shi Jianfeng, received a life sentence and was told to pay $2 million yuan in fines.   There was a very vitriolic outcry from Chinese netizens for the life sentence, saying that more serious crimes carried lighter sentences.

Another complaint was that the highway tolls were so expensive that it encouraged this sort of fraud.

After the outrage was voiced, a retrial was announced, but also with the revelation that further investigation revealed that Shi Jianfeng had accomplices.

Seemingly, Shi Junfeng was that accomplice and stepped up so his brother does not take all the responsibility.

Miss Nebraska 2011 Teresa Scanlan is Miss America 2011 Winner

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 05:07 AM PST

The 86th Miss America pageant was held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in the Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas.

The winner of Miss America 2011 was Miss Nebraska, 17-year-old Teresa
Scanlan. The pageant was broadcast on ABC.

Miss America 2010, Caressa Cameron from Virginia, crowned Scanlan,
who will receive a $50,000 scholarship.  Scanlan was the winner of this
week’s Preliminary Talent Award, for her piano playing.

Scanlan was home schooled up to her junior year in high school.   She
was planning to attend Patrick Henry College, a Christian college in
Virginia, but put those plans on hold until the fall of 2011 after she
won Miss Nebraska.

Those plans will probably be deferred longer now
that she won the Miss America crown.

Scanlan, at age 17, is the youngest Miss America winner since 1921. The winner that year was 15-year-old Margaret Gorman of the District of Columbia.
