Gates visits Great Wall, China confirms J-20 stealth fighter

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 12:43 PM PST

US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Hu will visit Washington next week.

As would any visitor to Beijing should, US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates visited a very old Chinese defensive system: the Great Wall of China.    Gates learned about a more modern Chinese defense system: The J-20 Stealth fighter.

Chinese President Hu Jingtao confirmed to Gates the smoke signal leaked out last week:  China has flight tested the J-20 stealth fighter on Tuesday.

Many in the West suspected that the news and now the test flight were timed to coincide with Gates visit to the Middle Kingdom, however, Gates seems to indicate otherwise.

“I asked President Hu about it directly, and he said that the test had absolutely nothing to do with my visit and had been a pre-planned test,” Gates told reporters.

When pressed if he accepted Hu’s explanation, Secretary Gates responded: “I take President Hu at his word that the test had nothing to do with my visit.”

The J-20 made its maiden test-flight over Chengdu, Sichuan, creating a sonic boom.   Regardless of the timing, the Chinese message was clear:  they are trying to catch up.

The United States is the only nation with a fifth-generation jet, the F-22 Raptor.  The Russians are working on one of their own, and the Chinese have shown their determination to be part of the Stealth Club.

Triple Suns over Changchun China interesting optical illusion

People in China treated to "phantom sun" optical illusion. ITN

In Changchun the capital of Jilin Province in northeast China on January 8, people were treated to an interesting optical illusion:   triple suns, also called “phantom suns”.

On both sides of the real sun there the two phantom suns could be seen, each about one-tenth the size of the main sun.   They both possessed a circular, rainbow-like halo, strongly lit at the top.

Experts call the phenomena  ’phantom sun’ but it is also known unofficially as ‘ice halo’.   The frigid Siberian temperatures in Jilin this time of year make conditions conducive to the formation of ice crystals which create high clouds.

The optical illusion is a refraction of ice crystals which are at a much higher elevation this time of year than in the summer.

Just to the north of Changchun, Jilin is the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival.
