Mobile number portability to be applied nationwide from 20th January

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 12:57 AM PST

The mobile phone users in the country can now be able to change their operator without changing their number, with the introduction of the 'Mobile Number Portability'. The service will be launched on Thursday and will be available according to the tariffs of the respective operators.

The service which is already introduced in Haryana, will now be available nationwide. According to the ratings agency ICRA, the service may increase the retention costs and may also lower the average revenue per user.

It is obvious that the introduction of MNP will increase the competition among the operators, to give the most reasonable tariffs for their customers. The service providers have to further improve their services like the network coverage and other services like 3G.

Such services can attract a customer to the operator, if given a reasonable tariff. Sources have said that, the service can be beneficial to those who have a strong profile in the market. Especially those, who are popular among the customers.

At the insistence of the Obama Administration, Chinese President Hu Jintao will take part in a joint press conference with President Barak Obama according to a statement made by the White House today.

The press conference, scheduled for Wednesday, is not something that President Hu normally does.   In China his appearances are often scripted ones with citizens or he makes speeches.    Dealing with a more open media, such as the American press is not typical.

However, the press conference will not be too long, with only four questions scheduled.  Two will be from Chinese reporters and two from American reporters.

The press conference will give President Hu an opportunity to improve China’s image with the American people.

“He wants to try to do a little public relations and get his message across,” said Joseph Cheng, head of the City University of Hong Kong’s Contemporary China Research Center

Subject such as human rights, especially the imprisonment of Nobel Laureate Liu Xiaobo, support for North Korea, China’s valuation of the yuan, or other touchy subjected are expected to be fielded by the American reporters.
