Chinese health officials inspect labels on milk products. AFP

China’s Xinhua News Agency reported on Thursday that 96 people have been detained for suspicion of selling and producing dairy products which were tainted with melamine.

Melamine, an industrial chemical normally used in plastic production, was banned from being used in food products in 2008 after the chemical killed six babies and poisoned 300,000.

The chemical gave the appearance of giving milk an increased protein count when it was added to watered-down milk in order to pass quality checks.  Because of the danger posed to the public, two people were executed for their participation in the scandal.

China’s Food Safety Committee Office said since July, officials investigated 40 cases involving tainted milk and detained 96 suspects.  Seventeen people have already been imprisoned, two receiving life sentences.

Since then July, a total of 2,132 tons of milk powder tainted with melamine, has been discovered.
