Tradition of death money followed in Rajasthan

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 11:01 AM PDT

India is a land of several traditions. Some of the traditions which are considered weird like the 'Sati', in which the wife is set ablaze to death if the husband dies, are not practiced any more. But there are still some weird practices like 'Mautana' or death money, which is still prevalent.

The tradition is prevalent in the state of Rajasthan in India, in which the person who is responsible for another person's death has to pay the family of the victim some compensation money. Gautam Meena was killed by Manish, a resident of Lakhya Phanta village.

Manish's shop was set ablaze, when he refused to give the 'mautana' to the family members of Gautam. According to the tradition the family of the victims has all the right to fight for the compensation until the money is given.

This tradition is known as 'chanotara' and is mostly practiced by the tribal communities in the region. When Manish refused to pay the money, the victim's of the family members had stolen many things from his house and then had put the house on flames. In another similar incident, Narmada's parents kept the body of their daughter, who died of illness in front of her in-law's house and said that they would take the body only when the 'mautana' is paid.

The local authorities also known as the 'panchayat' in Surjapur village in Ajmer, India had given weird punishments to three men in the village to prove their innocence. The tribal community of the village had ordered to stay in seven feet deep water, unless another swims up to 100 feet.

While the third man was made to stand naked in front of the whole community, for the whole night. The villagers said that the case started in 1994, when Nathu Lal was killed in a road accident.

Nathu's wife had then accused her duaghter's husband of killing her husband Sunil Kanjar and had also filed a case against him in the court. The court had then acquitted the accused due to lack of evidence.

But the matter was then taken out in the village panchayat, which also led to riots in the village. Meanwhile nathu's wife had brought back her daughter from her in-laws place. And when Sunil asked the panchayat, to give him his wife back, the village authorities had taken him and two of his relatives to the jungle to take the decision. The meeting was held secretly, where the panchayat gave the weird punishments. Later the police came to know about the meeting and raided them and warned not to practice such things.

Bhagat Singh’s death anniversary today, some of his quotes

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 11:16 PM PDT

23rd March is observed as the death anniversary of the great Martyr Bhagat Singh. He possessed great passion for the country's independence and did not fear death.

Bhagat left home and sacrificed his family life, to fight for the country's independence. Apart from his passion for the country's independence, Singh liked to read and also maintained a diary, when he was arrested by the British police from Lahore in the year 1929.

Bhagat had set an example for the all the youngsters in the country by showing the spirit he had at a very young age. His fight for freedom had got support, when he underwent fast for 64 days while in jail, demanding for equal right for Indian and British political prisoners.

To remember the great person on the day of his sacrifice, here are a few quotes that can be sent to friends and family to remind them about Bhagat's sacrifice.

1. If the deaf are to hear, the sound has to be very loud. When we dropped the bomb, it was not our intention to kill anybody. We have bombed the British Government. The British must quit India and make her free.

2. I emphasize that I am full of ambition and hope and of full charm of life. But I can renounce all at the time of need, and that is the real sacrifice.

3. We humbly claim to be no more than serious students of the history and conditions of our country and her aspirations. We despise hypocrisy.
