Children dropped from height of 15 feet as ritual Posted: 21 Mar 2011 07:52 AM PDT The Nidoni village in the state of Karnataka in India, has a weird ritual of dropping small children from a height of 15 to 20 feet. Children as young as six months are dropped at the hands of the priest at the Shiva Parvathi temple in the village. Couples who are blessed with a child after a long time, take a vow, that they would make their child go through this weird ritual as an offering to the God. The priest drops the child from a height and is held in a blanket held below by men. The temple authorities say that cotton and soft material is placed below the blanket as a safety precaution. Till now no reports of any child getting injured have been reported. The ritual takes place annually at the temple and has been practiced since many years. Couples with blind faith, register themselves for Rs. 100, which goes to the temple fund, to get their children dropped. Such a practice to drop children from a height may even lead to neck or spine injuries as they are dropped in the blanket without getting harnessed or protected. Attempts are being made to stop such weird practices in the village and to create awareness about superstitions. |
