400 people fall sick on consuming ‘Kuttu Ka Atta’

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:55 AM PDT

More than 400 people have been hospitalized and one has reportedly died after consuming adulterated food prepared from 'Kuttu Ka Atta' (buck wheatflour ) in Delhi and areas around the capital. Till now some of the mill owners in East Delhi have been detained by the police for selling adulterated flour to the retailers.

As the Navratri season has begun, food items made out of 'Kuttu Ka Atta', which are specially made for the occasion, were consumed by the victims. People who observed fast on the occasion, terminate their fast by consuming food made of the flour.

The Delhi police and the district administration and food adulteration department are now on their toes by conducting raids in different places. After the incident, the government of Uttar Pradesh has imposed a ban on the sale of the 'kitchen' brand buckwheat flour, as it is suspected to be contaminated.

200 people in east Delhi alone have fallen ill, after consuming the food made of the flour, which was purchased from a local shop. The flour was prepared at a mill in Mandawali. As the Naratri festival has begun, devotees observe fast and do not consume food grains and instead consume food items made out of buckwheat flour.
