The word 'Ugadi' also termed as 'Yugadi', is a South Indian word and festival celebrated by the people of the Deccan region of India. The word has two divisions, 'Yug' and 'Aadi'. 'Yug' means an era and 'Aadi' means the beginning. The festival is thus celebrated as the beginning of a new era.
'Yugadi' is celebrated in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, while the same day is celebrated as 'Gudi Padwa' in the state of Maharashtra. The Sindhis too celebrate the same day as their New Year Day, which they call 'Cheti Chand'. Manipuris too celebrate the same day as their New Year as 'Sajibu Cheiraoba'. The festival of 'Navratri' is celebrated by Hindus, when the nine different forms of Goddess Durga is worshipped in nine days. With the addition of Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala, the participant teams have become 10.
