Alice in Wonderland Tim burton and Jhonny Depp biggest Box Office Film Posted: 07 Mar 2010 02:18 PM PST Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" is the first 3-D release since James Cameron's "Avatar" opened to box-office numbers that made had every studio exec in Hollywood crying, "We need our own 3-D mega-blockbuster!" Luckily, Disney had long planned "Alice" as a 3-D release, and Burton didn't have to submit his film to the last-minute addition of a third dimension, as "Clash of the Titans" filmmakers had to earlier this year. Alice in Woderland 2010 Movie Review 3: "To be honest I was expecting so much more from all the hype building up to this film's release. Burton has more than obviously juxtaposed the relationship between good and evil, however this is not what Alice in 'Underland' is about. I was hoping to see a graphical dive into the creativity and imagination of Alice's mind, however what we are presented with is an idolised view of each individual character thrown together in a weak and see through plot about power. The story has no originality, and throughout I was noting similarities between 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.' C.S Lewis may be in touch about copyright. Yes it's quirky and Burton's directing technique is interesting as always, but what is directing without a storyline?" his movie takes the audience on a miraculous ride through wonderland with mystical creatures and impossible events. The MPAA rating of "Alice in Wonderland" is PG for fantasy, action/violence involving scary images and situations, and for a smoking caterpillar. Critics seem to have differing opinions on the film, with Michael Rechtshaffen of The Hollywood Reporter calling it, "Truly, madly wonderful," and Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly describing it as "...murky, diffuse, and meandering..." Burton's real-life partner, Helena Bonham Carter, is visually and vocally perfect for the role of the Queen of Hearts, her giant heart-shaped face perched atop a tiny animated body. But for all the work that's gone into devising the character's Valentine-lollipop look and querulous voice, she's never given anything memorable to say beyond "Off with her head!" Stephen Fry (as the Cheshire Cat), Timothy Spall (as the Queen of Hearts' pet bloodhound), and Michael Sheen (as the White Rabbit) all provide top-drawer voice work, but the sense of ensemble is absent. Just as the human actors seem to have been filmed in green-screen isolation, so the voices sound like they've arrived from separate glassed-in booths. (Compare, for example, Fantastic Mr. Fox, in which the actors mesh so beautifully with one another and with their animated avatars that you forget George Clooney and Meryl Streep weren't born covered in fur.) California Lottery and all the numbers Posted: 07 Mar 2010 02:17 PM PST The California State Lottery, also known as the California Lottery, began on November 6, 1984 after California voters passed Proposition 37, the California State Lottery Act of 1984, authorizing the creation of a lottery. The first tickets were purchased on October 3, 1985. The minimum age to purchase or redeem California Lottery tickets is 18. top lottery games rollover again after players fail to match the winning numbers for several weeks. Multi rollover games are always exciting for players and there three amazing jackpots in particular for lottery players to get involved in this weekend. These come from both US multi state lottery games MegaMillions and PowerBall and of the European games, the EuroMillions as all of these lotteries unfortunately failed to produce a winner on the last draw. |
Alice in Wonderland Review of Breaking All Records Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:49 PM PST Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland set a new high for March openings. The film brought in $41 million including its 3D and IMAX 3D screens, making it the biggest Friday on record for March, and puts it on pace to easily beat the previous weekend record in March, which up until this point was held by action film, 300. Three years ago 300 set the record with a $70 million opening weekend. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but wait, isn't this supposed to be a kids' film? Director Tim Burton does have the tendency to go either too dark or too light, and the strange lack of balance is glaring in Alice in Wonderland, and as a result the movie is a mess in various ways. In the end, this film is clearly a paycheck gig for Hollywood's most mainstream freak. While the main culprit is the assembly-line screenplay, Tim Burton is the director and must shoulder the blame for this genuinely uninvolving motion picture. This film could have been made by any number of less-talented directors, and there are few genuine Burton touches to be found (Danny Elfman's score is a lone highlight). Where Tim Burton goes from here is any one's guess. Steven Spielberg followed up Hook with Jurassic Park, which kicked off seventeen-years of some of the very best work of his career (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, Munich, etc). We'll know soon enough whether or not, to paraphrase Batman Returns (his second-best film, behind Ed Wood), Tim Burton can once again become a genuine freak or whether he'll have to wear a mask for the rest of his career. As the tantrum-prone Red Queen saddled with a basketball-sized noggin, Helena Bonham Carter does for "Alice in Wonderland" what Depp achieved as swaggering Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean" — making an average movie better. Every time the quirky British actress appears on screen to glare, purse her lips — painted to resemble hearts (nice) — and explosively bark out, "Off with their heads!," Bonham Carter's electrifying. That nothing in her real-life partner Tim Burton's 3-D tinkering of the Lewis Carroll adventures — rumored to have cost $250 million — matches her isn't an outright Tags: Alice in Wonderland, alice in wonderland awesome, alice in wonderland box office, alice in wonderland rating, alice in wonderland ratings, alice in wonderland reviews, alice in wonderland reviews 2010, alice in wonderland sucked, alice in wonderland trailer, alice in wonderland, art art gallery, illustration ottawa, Tim Burton, trailers, 1966, alice in wonderland, holly story book library, lewis carroll, r.garcia, world publishing company, Alice in the wonderland 2010, alice in the wonderland film by tim burton, alice in the wonderland movie, alice in the wonderland movie review |
What and when Daylight Savings time 2010 ? Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:48 PM PST Every Spring we move our clocks one hour ahead and "lose" an hour during the night and each Fall we move our clocks back one hour and "gain" an extra hour. But Daylight Saving Time (and not Daylight Savings Time with an "s") wasn't just created to confuse our schedules. In the US and Canada Daylight Saving Time always begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. This means that, on March 14, 2010, at 2:00 a.m. - you set the clocks ahead one hour. (Spring forward) And on Sunday, November 7, 2010, at 2:00 a.m. - you set the clocks back an hour. (Fall back) Daylight Saving Time begins each year at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March. Move clocks ahead one hour at the start of Daylight Saving Time. Standard Time begins each year at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November. Move your clocks back one hour at the resumption of Standard Time. Daylight Saving time and Time zones are regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation, not by NIST. In 2009, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 8 and ends on Nov.1. In 2010, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 14 and ends on Nov.7. Alice in Wonderland Box Office Report Highlights Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:32 PM PST The rest of the box office followed pretty much as expected. Overture's R-rated cop drama Brooklyn's Finest grossed an estimated $13.5 million for a second place finish. Shutter Island came right in under that with a third weekend take of an estimated $13.3 million. (These two films could swap places once the actual numbers are reported tomorrow.) Warner Bros. buddy comedy Cop Out fell 50% to earn another $9.1 million for a two-week gross of $32.4 million. Avatar, which held onto 695 of its 3-D screens, dropped 44%, its largest fall since it opened three months ago. Still the box office juggernaut earned another $7.7 million to put its 12-week domestic take at $720 million. This is just one of those cultural phenomenons that has caught everybody's interest," said Chuck Viane, Disney's president of distribution. "They don't come like this very often." Especially old-school is the framing device devised by veteran Disney animation screenwriter Linda Woolverton ("Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King"). In this version, Alice is introduced as a 6-year-old girl troubled by visions of falling down a hole and "seeing all these creatures," episodes her kindly dad assures her are nothing but dreams. Providing the voices for Underland's menagerie of inhabitants is an eclectic mix of British acting talent, including Welsh star Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit, Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Alan Rickman as Absolem the caterpillar, Barbara Windsor as the Dormouse, Sir Christopher Lee as the Jabberwocky, and the Rhondda Valley-born Paul Whitehouse as the March Hare. Oasis of the Seas trip and ride Cruise Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:31 PM PST Guests booked on the original inaugural season sail date of December 12, 2010, will be contacted by their travel agent or a Royal Caribbean representative, and given the opportunity to move their cruise vacation to the new sailing of December 5. Booked guests who wish to take the December 5 sailing will be re-accommodated in the same stateroom and category, and the cruise fare will be the lower of either the fare paid or current prices. Guests booked on the December 12, 2010 sailing will have until the end of February 2010 to opt to change their cruise to the December 5 sailing and ensure they keep the same stateroom. On the December 5, 2010, inaugural season voyage of Allure of the Seas, guests will be among the first to enjoy an exceptional vacation experience on the newest Oasis-class ship MS Oasis of the Seas is a cruise ship in the fleet of Royal Caribbean International. The first of her class, she is expected to be joined by her sister ship Allure of the Seas in November 2010. Both vessels are expected to cruise the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ship surpasses the Freedom-class cruise ships (also owned by Royal Caribbean) as the world's largest passenger vessel. With seven themed neighborhoods, from the open air Central Park with live plants and trees to a Boardwalk with a Coney Island feel, including a carousel and a zip-line, Oasis of the Seas is so much more than the world's largest cruise ship — it's on another level and has changed the face of cruise travel. But will cruise travelers want to sail with 5,400+ passengers and pay high fares for the experience? Academy Awards 82nd and Guesses Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:23 PM PST The introduction of a preferential voting system could possibly help "Inglourious Basterds" score what would be a monumental upset, but "The Hurt Locker" remains on pole position despite a slew of controversies which have engulfed the film in the final week of campaigning. BEST DIRECTOR FAVORITE: Kathryn Bigelow ("The Hurt Locker") DARK HORSE: James Cameron ("Avatar") After virtually ignoring woman directors at 81 previous editions of the Oscars -- only four women have ever been nominated for best director -- the Academy is finally set to honor a female film-maker, Kathryn Bigelow. Disney-owned WABC, the station that would be beaming the festivities to New York City-area viewers, was pulled off Cablevision around midnight last night. The channel was still AWOL as of this morning, with no immediate resolution in sight. Some 3 million area customers are affected. The Academy Awards have scrapped Tiger Woods jokes that were to be performed by hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. "Some of the Tiger jokes were deemed too rude," a source told the New York Post. In other Oscars news, Avatar director James Cameron has reportedly said he doesn't mind Avatar jokes. Alice in Wonderland Movie and Film View's Posted: 07 Mar 2010 01:15 PM PST The face belongs to Mia Wasikowska. The fortunate may remember her from the HBO series In Treatment, where, portraying a troubled teenager, she burned a hole right through the small screen – one look was enough to know you were in the presence of a major talent. Here, thanks to Linda Woolverton's reworking of the Lewis Carroll books, Wasikowska is a teen again. This is an older Alice, 19 now, poised to return to the half-remembered "Underland" of her youth, although not before appearing as the star attraction at a Victorian engagement party. There, proposed to by dishwater-dull Hamish, she does the only sane thing – flees down the rabbit hole with her furry, frocked companion. The familiar journey begins. Depp takes to many different voices and persona's with Mad Hatter which gives you an eclectic mix of funny, serious and downright maddening feelings from the character but still humanizing him as a lovable person who at times may just be simply confused, which he most certainly is. Almost as mad in her own right is the Red Queen whose head is so large you can't quite help but wonder how it sits atop her body. The Red Queen has the attention span of a small child and amuses herself with royal subjects that are just as peculiar as herself. Following a brief childhood scene at outset, Woolverton flash-forwards to several years later. Now 19, Alice (an impressive Mia Wasikowska) is at a stuffy garden party, where a dull, chinless suitor with bad digestion is set to propose. None too jazzed at the prospect, this imaginative spitfire ditches the aristocratic revelers the instant a White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) presents an escape route. urton has never really felt an emotional connection to Alice in the past, saying that the original story was about a girl who was wandering around from character to character without experiencing an emotional connection, herself. It's for that reason that he wanted to give the story "some framework of emotional grounding, and to try and make Alice feel more like a story as opposed to a series of events." Alice in Wonderland Breaks Box Office Posted: 07 Mar 2010 12:03 PM PST This weekend was another trip to the record books as Alice in Wonderland propelled to $116.3 million over its debut weekend. That's the sixth-biggest start ever, the biggest non-sequel ever (beating Spider-Man, which debuted to $114 million in 2002). It's the biggest 3D debut (besting Avatar's $77 million opening). Plus, it's the second-biggest non-summer opening of all time behind the $142 million debut of Twilight Saga: New Moon. With a surprisingly strong 2.8x multiplier, the picture debuted with a $41 million Friday and a $44.3 million Saturday (up 8%). The might of its first two days leads me to believe that Sunday, an estimated 30% drop to $30.9 million, was vastly underestimated (with the Oscars being the big unknown variable), so don't be too surprised if tomorrow's final numbers are even bigger. The teaser images of Tim Burton's 3D Alice in Wonderland were really something, and pure Burton: dual versions, seemingly moulded from dough, of Matt Lucas as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, and Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen with scarlet hair, cupid's-bow lips and a huge bulbous head. The characters, language, puzzles and predicaments of Carroll's 1865 novel and its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, became and remain part of the texture of our lives, as embedded as ancient mythology and more endearing. From the start, they've attracted movie-makers. Oscars Awards 2010 Academy Awards 2010 Posted: 07 Mar 2010 10:37 AM PST The 82nd annual Academy Awards will air live from Hollywood at the Kodak Theatre on Sunday, March 7, 2010 on ABC at 8 PM ET. Meanwhile, the full official roster of nominees were announced on February 2, 2010. This year, 10 major Hollywood films were nominated for best picture, in a clever move by the Academy to further popularize the Oscars with a wider audience. Hopefully, the new format will keep more viewers glued to their TVs on Oscar night to see if their favorite movie or Hollywood star wins. Hosting duties this year go to the quirky combo of actor Alec Baldwin and comedian Steve Martin, who co-star in the December release "It's Complicated" opposite Meryl Streep. This will be the first time the Oscars have featured a hosting duo since Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase in 1987. Zach Galifianakis shaved beard off Posted: 07 Mar 2010 04:37 AM PST Zacharius Knight "Zach" Galifianakis (born October 1, 1969)[1] is an American comedian and actor, known for numerous film and television appearances including his own Comedy Central Presents special. While initially more of an "underground" comedian, he garnered mainstream attention with his role in the successful 2009 comedy The Hangover. Too bad he shaved it off sometime during the March 6th episode of "Saturday Night Live," as his rep confirmed to Zap2it. In the opening monologue, Galifianakis delivered his signature one-liners while playing the piano. It's difficult to really describe his humor. Some of it's observational, some of it's non-sequitur. While working as a bus boy, he got his first acting job on a sitcom called "Boston Common" for NBC. He has since been seen on a number of late-night talk shows including "Letterman," "Conan" and "Jimmy Kimmel." His films include "Heartbreakers," "Bubble Boy," "Below," "Corky Ramano," "Out Cold" and "The Comedians of Comedy." He was also a series regular playing Davis on "Tru Calling" for Fox. "What I call the 'geography' of a room — its size, its layout, the overall feel of the place — really determines how far you can push things," the comic in question, a cherubic man with a fiery red beard and the distinctly unshowbizlike name of Zach Galifianakis, told me in the greenroom a short time before. "I love to do shows in unlikely places, because the audience's expectations are less fixed. If you're going on right after a guy with suspenders and a skinny, 1980's-style comedy tie, who's been striking crazy poses — doing the same type of material that worked in 1991 — there's no space for trying unconventional stuff. tags: zach galifianakis, come on and get it (up in 'dem guts) feat fiona apple, Zach galifianakis, featuring fiona apple |
Posted: 07 Mar 2010 04:17 AM PST Mark Linkous (March 6, 2010) was an American singer, songwriter and musician, best-known as leader of Sparklehorse. Originally from Virginia, Linkous lived in North Carolina where he established the Static King Studio in Hayesville, NC. He was the first in his entire family to not be a coal miner Linkous cofounded indie band Dancing Hoods in the 1980s. Following their breakup, Linkous continued writing songs (notably "Sick of Goodbyes" with David Lowery, which appeared on Kerosene Hat by Cracker). Linkous founded Sparklehorse in 1995, who have since released four records. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous has committed suicide, his publicist confirms to Rolling Stone. Best known for his acclaimed work with Sparklehorse, who released four albums of imaginative ambient psych-folk, Linkous also produced Daniel Johnston's 2003 album Fear Yourself and collaborated with Danger Mouse on Dark Night of the Soul. Mark Linkous: Well, I'm working on what I hope will be my next record and writing a lot of new songs that are sort of atypical of a lot of Sparklehorse stuff we've been doing. I've been trying to write really simple songs to make them sound like they're coming out of a satellite that's crashing into a gas giant or something.
