Utah Earthquake about 700 earthquakes

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 08:27 PM PDT

According to the University of Utah Seismology Center, the quake, measuring at 2.9 on the richter scale, was centered about four miles NNW of Saratoga Springs, and 16 miles NW of Provo.

The earthquake happened just after 1a.m.

Several people called the ABC 4 newsroom to see what was going on.

What is a fault? A fault is a break in the earth's crust along which movement can take place causing an earthquake. In Utah, movement along faults is mostly vertical; mountain blocks (for example, the Wasatch Range) move up relative to the downward movement of valley blocks (for example, the Salt Lake Valley).

Why are faults a concern? Faults with evidence of Holocene (about 10,000 years ago to present) movement are the main concern because they are most likely to generate future earthquakes. If the earthquake is large enough, surface fault rupture can occur.

The Utah Seismic Safety Commission says about 700 earthquakes, including aftershocks, occur every year in Utah.

Roughly 80 percent of the state's population would be affected by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch Fault.

National Day Of Prayer 2010 Cancelled By Mr.Obama

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:51 PM PDT

The subject of religious observances have proven vexing for President Obama before. For many years Barack Obama attended the prestigious Trinity United Church of Christ then presided over by the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Reverend Wright's invective filled sermons were played and replayed repeatedly on television and talk radio and proved to be very embarrassing to the then Presidential candidate. Barack Obama, who was married at the Trinity United Church of Christ and considered at one time Reverend Wright as his spiritual advisor, was obliged at last to leave the church and to repudiate Reverend Wright.

The truth: President Obama has not, in fact, canceled the National Day of Prayer. Per a 1988 Act of Congress setting the observance on the first Thursday of every May, the U.S. National Day of Prayer will take place as usual on May 6, 2010.

I believe President Truman initiated the National Day of Prayer and it became an ongoing practice for years to come. So, as of right now the event is not cancelled unless President Obama officially announces something in the next couple of weeks.

The White House notes that presidents previous to Bush, including Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, were not in the habit of holding White House events for the National Day of Prayer. National Day of Prayer Task Force Vice Chairman Brian Toon recently acknowledged that there weren't regular White House events to mark the day until the Bush years, telling the Religion News Service: "There was no East Room event until George W."

The National Day of Prayer Task Force, chaired by Shirley Dobson, will be holding an observance at the Cannon House Office Building on Thursday, May 7, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. That observance is open to the public. The White House has been asked to send a representative on behalf of the Executive Branch, but no response has been received, as of today. The Legislative and Judicial Branches will be represented.

This year however, President Obama, decided to cancel the ceremony at the White House not wanting to offend anyone. Yet, on September 25, 2009 from 4am until 7pm, a National Day of Prayer for the Muslim religion will be held on Capitol Hill, beside the White House. As a Christian, this angers me to my roots and certainly offends me! Apparently Obama has no problem running the risk of 'offending' the majority of the American people who believe in the God of the Bible. Just where do the allegiances of this man fall to? I think we know. He has made it abundantly clear.

Volcano In Iceland Evacuated 800 Residents From Eyjafjallajokull Glacier

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:42 PM PDT

The cloud, floating miles above Earth and capable of knocking out jet engines, wrecked travel plans for tens of thousands of people, from tourists and business travelers to politicians and royals. They couldn't see the source of their frustration — except indirectly, when the ash created vibrant red and lavender sunsets.

Authorities evacuated 800 residents from around the Eyjafjallajokull glacier as water gushed down the mountainside and rivers rose by up to 10 feet (3 meters).

Iceland's main coastal ring road was closed near the volcano, and workers smashed holes in the highway in three spots in a bid to give the rushing water a clear route to the coast and prevent bridges from being swept away.

Emergency officials and scientists said the eruption under the ice cap was 10 to 20 times more powerful than an eruption that happened in the area late last month, and carried a much greater risk of widespread flooding.

"This is a very much more violent eruption because it's interacting with ice and water," said Andy Russell, an expert in glacial flooding at the University of Newcastle in northern England.

"It becomes much more explosive, instead of a nice lava flow oozing out of the ground."

About 500 people were moved from the area, a civil protection officer said.

"estimated that no-one is in danger in the area, but have started an evacuation plan and between 500 and 600 people are being evacuated," Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of the Icelandic civil protections department told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Kate Hudson Give Her Son a Haircut

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:29 PM PDT

Kate Garry Hudson (born April 19, 1979) is an American actress. She came to prominence in 2001 after winning a Golden Globe and receiving several nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her role in Almost Famous. She then starred in the hit film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) which gained her wider fame. She has since established herself in Hollywood after starring in several production including Skeleton Key (2005), You, Me and Dupree (2006), Fool's Gold (2008) and Bride Wars (2009). She recently starred in the musical Nine (2009), alongside several notable film actresses.

Hudson, 31, has said it's always been tough to give her son a haircut.

"He won't let me cut it," she said in 2007. "I said, 'We're gonna have to cut your hair...' and he goes, 'Yeah mom... I wanna mohawk!' I was like, 'I can't.'"

With Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk doing its thing up on the Newman Bandstand — the same picturesque outdoor stage that has hosted countless New Orleans weddings as well as "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" — Hudson is feeling the music, dancing and twirling while her white sundress dances and twirls along with her.

Kate Hudson Has a New Boyfriend

While Kate's enjoying the single life, her ex hubby Chris Robinson, who is the father of her child, is less than thrilled about all the men in her life.

A source said: "Chris is concerned about Ryder [their son] and the effect all this dating will have on him. He knows there's not much he can do about it. Kate enjoys the company of a man."

Tommy Thompson Don't Know What He Is Going To Do

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 01:20 PM PDT

Tommy George Thompson (born November 19, 1941), a United States politician, was the 42nd Governor of Wisconsin, after which he served as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Thompson was a candidate for the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, but dropped out early after a poor performance in polls such as the Iowa Straw Poll.

As head of Health and Human Services, Thompson oversaw the scandal-ridden FDA when it approved the VeriChip as a medical device. Shortly after leaving his cabinet post, he joined the board of the VeriChip Corporation and wasted no time in using his clout to promote the company's glass encapsulated RFID tags. These tags are injected into human flesh to uniquely number and identify people.

But Thompson later told the AP that he hadn't made up his mind. "The only person who knows what I'm going to do is myself and I don't know what I'm going to do," he said.

That forced the local radio station to amend its earlier report; it now says Thompson will announce his decision tomorrow.

Thompson has been the marquee Republican in the state for decades and was elected as governor four times. He also served as secretary of health and human services in the Bush administration and ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008. (He dropped out well before the voting began.)

Charlie Crist Veto poverty schools children's education

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 12:34 PM PDT

On June 24, 2009, Fla. Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed the Consumer Choice Act (H.B. 1171). The bill would have trumped state regulation, and allowed Florida's biggest insurance companies to establish their own rates.State Farm Florida expressed its disappointment with Crist's veto of the bill the company said "would have given consumers more options in their choice of a property insurer. It would have attracted more capital to the property insurance market in Florida." State Farm had proposed a 47.1% property insurance rate increase for Florida policyholders. As a result of Crist's move, State Farm plans to drop coverage for more than 700,000 homeowners by 2011.

Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed a bill Thursday that would have made it easier to fire Florida teachers and link their pay to student test scores, a move that will anger Republican legislative leaders and former Gov. Jeb Bush. Some say Crist's rejection of the measure (SB 6) signals that he is about to drop out of the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, where he badly trails in the polls, and run as an independent.

And at least one lawmaker - maybe in what is a sign of more to come -- pulled his support of Crist in the U.S. Senate race. "Governor Crist is playing political games with our children's education," said Rep. John Tobia, a freshman Republican from Satellite Beach.
The bulk of GOP lawmakers who pushed the merit pay for teachers legislation dodged comment or gave mild retorts, preferring to issue prepared statements. The reaction came quickly with the Florida Education Association issued one of the quickest releases (at 12:11 p.m.) mere moments after Crist opened his remarks.

Republicans are angry that Crist embraced the stimulus package -- which did a lot more to help public schools in Florida than the misguided merit pay legislation SB 6. The legislation would tie teacher salaries and recertification to student performance on a host of standardized -- yet undeveloped -- tests. Teachers overwhelmingly oppose the legislation. Even award-winning teachers who stand to gain from the measure have condemned it.

The measure would likely make low performing "poverty schools" even less attractive to talented teachers because it would exacerbate existing pay inequities and job insecurity. But lawmakers apparently do not mind playing political football with something as vital as education. Teachers should face quality evaluations, but standardized testing is woefully inadequate in this regard.

Meteor in Wisconsin Fireball Seen What is this ?

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 05:41 AM PDT

'Gamma Meteor Shower' amazed the spectators last night at the areas of Wisconsin and Iowa around 10:15 pm. An official at the Communications Center said "the meteor was first spotted to the center about 10:15 pm and after half an hour almost 36 calls were received by the center regarding the same matter". An amateur astronomer said that he actually saw the clouds of fire rolling towards the ground last night.

The friend reported seeing several "vertical trails" in the sky, so it sounds like it could have been a meteor exploding and creating several trails.

These are dreadful indeed but as most meteors are smaller than sand grains, so almost all of them crumble and never hit the Earth's surface, but some powerful or unusual meteor showers do hit the surface and are known as meteor storms. They can fabricate more than 1,000 meteors in just an hour and so can harm the living beings on earth as well. The 'Gamma Meteor Shower' of last night is one of the first few meteor showers that were marked for year 2010.

Over time, shale, dirt and sediment filled the hole to make the impact site virtually indistinguishable from the surrounding land. A shallow sea covering Wisconsin at the time of the impact likely blunted the meteorite's effect.

The report said the impact at Rock Elm released more than 1,000 megatons of explosive energy, lifted the earth at the center more than 1,650 feet and sent shock waves through the rocks, crushing them.

"They were at ground zero, so they got the brunt of it," said William S. Cordua, of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, and one of the paper's authors.

The confirmation of what happened here millions of years ago is significant to geologists seeking to trace geological patterns, said Don Yeomans, an astronomer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

Brooke White American Idol Love and All

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 05:37 AM PDT

Brooke Elizabeth White (born June 2, 1983) is an American indie pop/folk-pop singer-songwriter from Mesa, Arizona who was the fifth place finalist on the seventh season of American Idol. In 2005, White released her first studio album called Songs from the Attic. White's first post-Idol album High Hopes & Heartbreak was released on July 21, 2009. The first single "Hold Up My Heart" was released on February 25, 2009 and the song debuted at #47 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single "Radio Radio" was released on June 23, 2009.

As I told you when we posted the Adam Lambert performance (of "Whataya Want From Me") from last night's American Idol, Brooke White & Justin Gaston also performed during the (double) elimination episode, delivering a duet of "If I Can Dream". White, a former Idol contendee was on the piano while Gaston (who I've honestly never heard of) played the guitar. The week's theme on American Idol was Elvis, and featured the aforementioned Lambert as the mentor for this season's contestants.

We lost Andrew Garcia first, but it wasn't really too much of a shock. He'd been barely hanging on for weeks, and was most likely getting through on the strength of his earlier success. He was a favorite from the auditions, and once Hollywood week hit, he did the most amazing version of Paula Abdul's Straight Up, showing so much promise. But that was apparently the best he had in him. He failed to even come close to that for several weeks, but then had a good week singing Chris Brown's Forever, and a so-so week after this singing Can't Buy Me Love.

Type o Negative heavy metal band from Brooklyn

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 05:29 AM PDT

Type O Negative is a heavy metal band from Brooklyn, New York City. Although commonly viewed as a gothic metal band, Type O has also incorporated elements of doom metal and thrash metal. Their dramatic lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death has resulted in the nickname "The Drab Four" (in homage to The Beatles "Fab Four" moniker). The band went Platinum with 1993's Bloody Kisses, and has gained an enormous following with seven studio albums, two best-of compilations, and concert DVDs. Their most recent album is 2007's Dead Again.

Peter Steele, the lead singer for Type O Negative and a true icon, enigma, has reportedly died of heart failure at the age of 48. As of 4AM, fellow bandmate Kenny Hickey has confirmed initial rumors of his passing, despite a similar rumor in 2005, it appears the reports of his passing are true. His work with Type O Negative was groundbreaking and a large influence on other various genres of metal especially "doom". As the song goes, "Everything Dies" but know that the music lives on...

Peter Steele Dead or Alive ?

Posted: 15 Apr 2010 05:29 AM PDT

Peter Steele (born Petrus T. Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S., died April 15, 2010) was the lead singer, bassist, and composer for the Gothic metal band Type O Negative. Steele, who stood 6' 7" (201 cm) tall, had a low, bass heavy voice, which is one of the most recognizable features in Type O Negative's music. Before joining Type O Negative, he played for the metal group Fallout and the thrash band Carnivore.

Despite a message on the band's official web site that seems to suggest otherwise, TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele HAS NOT DIED.

The band, who are famous for their dark sense of humor, have spent much of the last few months preparing material for their SPV Records debut, which is expected to be recorded later in the year.

TYPE O NEGATIVE cancelled their U.S. tour last fall in order to allow Steele to undergo further tests after "undisclosed anomalies" were discovered during a medical exam. A February 11, 2005 update on Peter's condition from TYPE O NEGATIVE drummer Johnny Kelly stated, "There really isn't much to report other than he's doing fine and his health is improving daily."
