Diego Maradona believes Diego Milito will add to squad’s strike-force

London, (IANS) Diego Maradona believes Diego Milito, who had two goals in Inter Milan’s Champions League win vs Bayern Munich, will help to the team’s strike-force in the FIFA World

Cup 2010.

Maradona said Milito’s performance reinforces his belief in the striker’s ability.

“He (Milito) scored two great goals, which show why I picked him,” Maradona was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph Monday.

Maradona has said he may play three forwards, with Lionel Messi of Barcelona teaming up front the Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez of Manchester City. Milito, Sergio Aguero of Atletico Madrid and Martin Palermo of Boca Juniors look likely to be reserves.

A few days ago Maradona said he could not leave Tevez – the most popular player in the country – out of the lineup. In a recent poll, Messi was only No.5 on the popularity list.

“It didn’t surprise me what he (Milito) did. He’s had a spectacular season. But so have Lio (Messi), Tevez and Kun,” said Maradona, using Aguero’s nickname.

“Messi is the best in the world and if he has the ball we have more possibilities,” Maradona said. “Thank God he’s an Argentine.”

Maradona said several times he was relaxed going into his first World Cup as Argentina’s coach, adding that the South Americans had everything needed to contend for the title.

Maradona won the World Cup as a player in 1986 and led Argentina to the 1990 final. But he has been widely criticized since taking over as coach 19 months ago, many questioning his tactics and lack of formal coaching training.

Argentina struggled in the qualifiers, absorbing a humiliating 1-6 loss against Bolivia and a 1-3 loss at home against Brazil, before making the cut for the World Cup.

Nigeria, South Korea and Greece are the other teams clubbed with Argentina.

“I see this group as very solid,” Maradona said. “We have character and everything we need to have a great World Cup.”

Maradona has never publicly explained why he left Inter Milan defender Javier Zanetti and teammate and midfielder Esteban Cambiasso off the 23-man squad.

When asked about it, he shrugged his shoulders and seemed insulted he was even asked.

“Again with the list of 23, brother,” he replied to the question. “It’s done. I’ve already handed it in.”

In place of Zanetti, one of the world’s most experienced defenders, Maradona picked Ariel Garce of Argentine club Colon. Garce has played only one match for the national team, appearing earlier this month in a 4-0 victory over Haiti.

“We know we aren’t the favourites, but we are going to surprise,” he said. “We are hungry for glory. I see it similar to ‘86. Besides, Messi arrives better than I was.”

French Open 2010: Roger Federer starts Paris title defense with simple victory

Paris, May 24 (DPA) Federer defeated Australia's Peter Luczak with 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 todya in a leading beginning to his title defense at the French Open 2010 as the Swiss bids for a 1st soil title this spell.

For only the second time in nine years, Federer enters Roland Garros without having won a clay court tournament. He came close this month in Madrid, where he lost that final to Rafael Nadal, dominator on the red clay in 2010.

Federer put in a straightforward performance in summery 30 Celsius heat and next faces Colombian Alejandro Falla.

“It’s super to return here after a year away from the 2009 final,” said the 16-time Grand Slam champion. “I feel pressure, but that is normal. I played a super match, I’m very content.”

“The first set was tough, it was hot, the ball flew and was a bit tough to control. He served well but so did I. Once I got the first set, I was calm straight through to the end.”

The durable Swiss is competing in his 42nd straight game in a Grand Slam tournament, good enough for fifth in the all-time list of longest uninterrupted runs at the majors.

If he keeps up his pace, the 28-year-old will equal Pete Sampras’s record of 284 weeks at number one when the rankings are released the day after the June 6 Paris final.

Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka also earned an impeccable start to his fortnight, hammering Czech Jan Hajek 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. Tomas Berdych, the 15th seed, got a Czech win as he beat Jorge Aguilar of Chile 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-1.

“I’m very happy with the way the match went, it was the ideal way to begin,” said Wawrinka. “I felt well right from the beginning. Winning so easily against Hajek, who’s a good player, is very rewarding. It’s the perfect beginning.”

Daniel Gimeno-Traver spoilt Dmitry Tursunov’s first match since the US Open nine months ago as the Russian returned after various injuries to sustain a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 thrashing.

American John Isner kept up his improvement on the alien surface with a defeat of Kazhak Andrey Golubev, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2, while compatriot Taylor Dent beat veteran Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).

In the women’s draw, third seed Caroline Wozniacki played through a nagging ankle problem to advance into the second round over Russian Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-0, 6-3.

The Dane said that she is forced to carry on with the problem due to tough WTA rules on top players missing events.

“It’s not just a fine, it’s also commitment tournaments, zero pointers,” she said.

“Maybe it would have been better if I could have taken a few weeks off, but those are the rules, and I did what I had to do.”

China’s 11th seed Li Na started with a win over Kristina Mladenovic of France, 7-5, 6-3. Lucie Safarova spoiled yet another injury return for Australian Jelena Dokic, playing only her fifth Tour-level event of the season, 6-2, 6-2.

But US Open quarter-finalist Melanie Oudin continued to disappoint, going down to Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues 7-5, 6-2.

3G services in India: Telecom operator Etisalat DB confident of services in Future

Posted: 24 May 2010 06:31 AM PDT

Dubai, May 24 (IANS) Telecom operator Etisalat DB, which pulled out from 3G auction in India after bidding exceeded the USD 2 billion-mark, is sure of providing the 3G services in coming time, reports The National, Abu Dhabi-based English daily.

“We pulled out around $2 billion and it did not make any sense for us to keep bidding. We had (selected areas to bid on) and those states went above our limit,” the daily quoted a company official as saying.

The Indian subsidiary of UAE’s Etisalat has recently launched operations in India under the Cheers Mobile brand. It was shut out of the 15 areas it bid on.

Etisalat wants to become a significant player in India. It remains confident that it can eventually offer 3G services when it determines that the Indian market is ready for it, according to the unnamed official.

“It is not the end of the world for 3G. The Indian government can hold another auction for 3G. At this point, they’re ready to sell anything,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.

The company launched its Indian operations with the lowest mobile rates in the country – between Re 0.1-0.6 per minute – but could sign up only a small number of subscribers.

Etisalat’s Chairman Mohammed Omran has said that the company also plans to acquire other companies in India.

“It is inevitable for India,” the official said, adding, “The next step is if we want to be part of the (mergers and acquisitions), what are the options we have on the table. Will we be part of it? Yes, because that’s what the market needs.”

India is the second fastest-growing mobile market in the world behind China, with 621.28 million subscribers.

Champions League T20 [CLT20] to include ten squads

Posted: 24 May 2010 06:25 AM PDT

Mumbai,  (IANS) The Champions League T20 (CL T20), that will be held in SA in coming September 10-26, will have ten squads, the governing body of Champions League T20 established on 24th May.

Squads from India, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies will compete in the tournament.

England counties have pulled out of the event because of clash of dates with their domestic competition.

Of the nine teams already qualified, just three will be returning from the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2009 – Royal Challengers Bangalore (India), Victorian Bushrangers (Australia) and Wayamba Elevens (Sri Lanka).

Only one place remains to be filled, with the West Indies’ representative to be confirmed in late July. Trinidad and Tobago represented the Caribbean in 2009 and set the tournament alight with their brilliant run through to the final.

“There is no doubt that the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 has improved the quality of domestic Twenty20 cricket around the world and motivated teams in all countries to strive for a coveted place at the tournament,” said N. Srinivasan, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Gerald Majola, Cricket South Africa CEO, said the tournament will reinforce South Africa's reputation as an ideal host for international sporting events.

“The CLT20 concept has also shown the potential for Twenty20 cricket to attract new, ever-increasing fans to the game and the associated benefits have subsequently flowed to domestic cricket around the globe,” he said.

James Sutherland, Cricket Australia, CEO, said: “While the participation of international players is an obvious highlight, CLT20’s ability to provide development opportunities for non-capped players is one of the most satisfying aspects of the tournament.”

The tournament will see 23 matches with the tournament format, match schedule and venues to be decided in the coming weeks.

Nine of the 10 competing teams:

Chennai Super Kings (DLF Indian Premier League – India)

Mumbai Indians (DLF Indian Premier League – India)

Kites in US Top 10 List, International Version on 28th May

kites

As former anticipated Hrithik Roshan & Barbara Mori's Kites gave a fabulous reaction at the box office throughout the nation. Reliance BIG Pictures made sure that the movie had the widest launching ever for a Bollywood movie with 2,000 shows in India & throughout 500 shows abroad.

Kites which was marketed fantastically globally has produced an astonishing amount of enthusiasm & interest & Reliance BIG Pictures is hence leaving no stones unturned in ascertaining that Kites arrives every keen movie viewer through 10,000 shows in India. Multiplexes have numerous 30 or more shows managed in a single day with Kites taking as good as entire screens in most of the theatres.

The publicity for Kites was great which resulted in a bumper starting though the crucial as well as viewer reaction was quite mixed. Several disliked the movie for its old story (or lack of it), predictable drama, general music & a sad climax. Nevertheless the exciting factor was so tough that the film traded of 21crores on its inaugural day itself, the 2nd highest inaugural response in India ever (after 3 Idiots). The film has telecasted to full-houses in 30 nations, again an unanticipated job.

The vital response in the international market was quite in comparison to the Indian media with several international interpreters ranking the film high. Like Hrithik claims, "Kites is pasta and not biryani' signifying it was aimed highly towards the overseas viewers in comparison to the Indian counterpart.

It started at No. 5 on the UK Box-office & whereas numerous Bollywood movies have appeared in the UK Top 10 list, Kites is the 1st Bollywood movie to make it appearance to the US Top 10 list in its opening weekend with No.10 place.

In the meantime, in India, the reaction is not actually as per the expectations & business specialists forecast that the business will go downward from Monday onwards by when the publicity settles down. Although there is no mega launching on the coming Friday & Kites has totally no competition at the box office, it requires being visible whether the business would be fast for Kites in its 2nd week. Assuming its big budget cost, the box-office fate of Kites will be determined by its 2nd week collections in India & revenues from the abroad.

The movie's international edition "Kites Remix" directed by Brett Ratner (Hollywood's moviemaker), will make it first appearance globally on the 28th May. Let's watch whether the abroad viewers reaction more optimistically to the international edition of the Kites or not.

‘Sajid Nadiadwala didn’t involve in corrupt business practice’

Posted: 24 May 2010 05:29 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): Chiefs at the music company Saregama have come out in defence of producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who has been claimed for unethically using the number “Apni toh jaise taise” in his movie “Housefull“, saying he followed the legal procedure to obtain the rights of the song.

“Sajid Bhai is a veteran and would not indulge in any unethical business practices,” Apurv Nagpal, Managing Director, Saregama said in a statement.

“Our relationship has been and continues to be excellent. I wish the Producers Guild of India and the Music Industry could get together to prevent such legal action in the future,” Nagpal added.

The Calcutta High Court had issued a notice to Nadiadwala earlier this month restraining him from using the remixed version of the song from late Prakash Mehra’s 1981 film “Laawaris”. His son Puneet Mehra alleged that Saregama had flouted copyright norms by allowing Nadiadwala to use the song and it should be removed from the film.

Nadiadwala’s counsel managed to get an amended order and the movie was released with the song.

New Delhi, May 24 (IANS): Industrial output in India will register double-digit increase in 2010-11, as per info by the government.

“Inspite of a calibrated withdrawal in the shape of a partial rollback of incentives, with a view to rein in inflation through fiscal and monetary measures, the performance in the industrial sector is expected to remain steady in 2010-11,” says an official note on industrial production.

India’s industrial output, measured by the index of industrial production (IIP), rose by an impressive 13.5 percent in March, despite the withdrawal of fiscal stimuli and tightening of the monetary policy, taking the overall expansion for 2009-10 to 10.4 percent.

During March, manufacturing output rose 14.3 percent, mining by 11 percent and electricity by 7.7 percent.

The cumulative growth for 2009-10 for these three sectors was 10.9 percent, 9.7 percent and 6 percent respectively.

“The growth in these sectors is expected to remain strong and with this, the overall growth in IIP is expected to be double digit during 2010-11,” a commerce ministry official said.

Asked about the likely impact of the European debt crisis on Indian economy, he said: “Till now, there has not been any significant impact. But we need to be very cautious. The situation needs close watch.”

Empowered ministers will take decision on petrol price rise

Posted: 24 May 2010 05:10 AM PDT

Chennai, May 24 (IANS): The meeting of empowered ministers is scheduled on June 7 to decision on rise in petrol and diesel rates, Petroleum MinisterMurli Deora said on Monday.

“The petroleum and natural gas ministry is working out a formula addressing the under-recovery of losses faced by government-owned oil marketing companies,” Deora told reporters here.

Deora was here to attend the parliamentary consultative committee of his ministry.

He said the government will take a balanced view taking into account the interests of consumers and vulnerable sections of the society as well as the health of the oil companies.

Ministry officials, however, hinted at a hike in petrol and diesel prices as the price of crude oil in the international markets is now hardening.

“The international price of crude oil is around $85 per barrel now. At this price, the oil companies will face an under-recovery of over Rs.100,000 crore,” said Petroleum Secretary S. Sundareshan.

Also, the debt-equity ratios of oil marketing companies is turning adverse owing to their borrowing, which stands at Rs.88,300 crore at the end of last fiscal.

Deora cited the increasing crude prices since 2003-04 when it ranged at $28 per barrel to $142 per barrel in 2008.

He said the government decided not to pass on the full price hike to the people to protect them from inflationary pressures.

The oil marketing companies have under-recoveries of Rs.46,051 crore in the last fiscal and the government has provided them with an assistance of Rs.26,000 crore, while the upstream oil companies have contributed around Rs.14,430 crore.

Sundareshan said the balance was absorbed by the oil marketing companies.

One charger will charge all mobiles; soon in the global market

Hyderabad, May 24 (IANS): An energy competent standard charger for all cells will shortly be launched in the global market, said International Telecommunication Union, a leading United Nations agency for Information and Communication Technologies matters.

ITU officials announced on the first day of World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-10) here Monday that standard mobile phone charger is ready to be introduced in the market. The new Universal Charging Solution (UCS) underlines the role of ICT in providing solutions towards mitigating climate change.

Director of ITU’s Telecommunication Standardisation Bureau (TSB), Malcolm Johnson, told reporters on the sidelines of the conference that it was a significant step in reducing the environmental impact of mobile charging.

He said UCS would reduce 13.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and 82,000 tonnes of redundant chargers.

Johnson said the telecom industry led the development of UCS and hence it would be universally accepted by the telecom companies.

The standardization of technology enables the same charger to be used for all future handsets, regardless of make and model. It will cut the number of chargers produced, shipped and subsequently discarded as new models become available.

The new standard will mean users worldwide will be able to charge their mobiles anywhere from any available charger, while also reducing the energy consumed while charging.

The new UCS standard was based on input from the GSMA, which predicts a 50 percent reduction in standby energy consumption.
