NEW DELHI, May 24, 2010 – Shares in firms controlled by India’s billionaire Ambani brothers Anil Ambani and Mukesh Ambani rallied on Monday after the brothers ended a non-compete agreement, taking a step towards reconciliation in their long-running feud. Ambani brothers Mukesh and Anil reconciliation bid props up shares * Reliance Ind, Reliance Natural, Reliance Comm shares up * Ambani brothers – Anil Ambani and Mukesh Ambani now free to compete on each other’s turf * Agreement gives firms scope to enter new sectors in India The brothers will now be free to compete on each other’s turf, with the exception of gas-fired power plants, removing a source of friction between the two conglomerates — Reliance Industries (RIL) and Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). “We believe the new agreement is positive for RIL, as it opens up opportunities for growth in new sectors within India,” Goldman sachs analysts wrote in a note. “But, given the competitive landscape in telecom, financial services etc., any potential entry by RIL could be in the form of co-operation with ADAG or via industry consolidation, in our view,” they wrote. Shares in energy major Reliance Industries, India’s most valuable firm at $73 billion and controlled by elder sibling Mukesh Ambani, were up 3.5 percent at 1,030.90 rupees by 0415 GMT after rising as much as 5.3 percent in early deals. Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Communications, India’s No. 2 mobile phone operator, rose 6.1 percent to 141.50 rupees, while Reliance Natural Resources jumped 20 percent. Sat, May 22, 2010 | air india express crash: Mangalore-bound air india plane crashes, leaves 160 dead A Mangalore-bound Air India Express plane overshot the runway at Bajpe Airport in Mangalore at 6.30 am this morning. At least 160 people are feared dead. Initial reports said that six people have survived the mishap. The Boeing-737 coming from Dubai burst into flames soon after it overshot the runway while landing at the airport, said eye witnesses. The Air India plane, manned by a Russian expat pilot reportedly landed 2000 feet from touchdown point. As many as 25 ambulances and firefighters have reached the spot and rescue efforts are on. Karnataka home minister VS Acharya told a TV channel: “There were 169 passengers on board, including four infants. Six or even of them may have survived.” All the passengers injured were taken to government hospitals. Abdul Putter, one of the survivors of this tragedy, lives to tell the gory tale. Reports say, another passenger, Pradeep, a technician who works in Dubai, jumped out of the plane and helped save two others. In his account to a TV channel, he said, “The local villagers helped us a lot, till the ambulance came in about 15 minutes. I can’t believe I’m still alive.” Rescue operations at the site are almost over. There is very little chance of any more survivors. Rescue operators said, most of the bodies were charred beyond recognition making it difficult to identify the dead. Aviation experts say that landing an aircraft in the Table Top airport in Mangalore requires special skills. The Boeing 737 is equipped with enough gadgets for a safe landing, so speculation is that human error maybe the cause of the accident. Experts also argue that if the visibility was poor, the pilot could have taken the aircraft up again and hovered around the airport till the visibility improved. But since the blackbox hasn’t yet been recovered, the exact cause of the crash remains unknown. The Bajpe airport was inaugurated only 10 days ago. Sonia Gandhi and Karnataka CM have condoled the death of the passengers. UPA has cancelled its anniversary celebrations.
