The research led by Heidelberg University in Germany tracked 5,000 men and women aged between 40 and 65 over eight years. They found that among those free of asthma at the start of the project, there was up to a 40 percent higher incidence of asthma eight years later if they suffered stress at work.

The signs were long working hours, demanding schedules and uncomfortable working conditions.

“Our study suggests work stress and the inability to relax after work are associated with an increased risk of asthma,” dailymail.co.uk quoted the report as saying.

Earlier studies have shown stress can lead to the release of chemicals that promote allergies and disrupt the way the body halts inflammation of the airways.

However, the team stressed that the absolute risk of someone developing asthma because they are overloaded at work is still very small.

The study appears in journal Allergy.

Towering entrance of Andhra Pradesh temple collapses

Posted: 26 May 2010 11:32 AM PDT

Hyderabad, May 27 (IANS) The ‘Rajagopuram’ or the towering entrance to the ancient Srikalahasti temple in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor district collapsed Wednesday night, police said. No one was injured.

The temple’s 136-feet-tall Rajagopuram, which had developed cracks recently, caved in. Police said there was no loss of human life as all shops located near the structure had already been shifted. However, over 100 monkeys are feared dead in the incident.

A large number of devotees gathered near the collapsed structure and expressed their anguish over the negligence by the authorities in protecting the Rajagopuram constructed in 1516 by Srikrishna Devaraya, the ruler of Vijayanagara empire.

On Tuesday, engineers, after an inspection of the seven-storeyed structure, had declared the 150-metre area around it as a danger zone. All shops in the area were then shifted.

Chief Minister K. Rosaiah expressed shock over the incident and asked the endowment department to take steps to rebuild the Rajagopuram.

Srikalahasti temple is one among the most visited temples in Andhra Pradesh, and it is considered almost a must visit for anyone who visits the famed Tirupati temple

Sonia Gandhi calls off Srinagar visit

Posted: 26 May 2010 11:24 AM PDT

Jammu, May 26 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi has cancelled her Srinagar leg of her visit to Jammu and Kashmir May 29, official sources said late Wednesday.

According to the sources, the decision to cancel Gandhi’s visit to Srinagar, where she was to lay the foundation stone of a colony to resettle Dal lake dwellers, was taken late Wednesday.

No reasons were given for the sudden change in Gandhi’s programme.

However, official sources said that Gandhi will visit Jammu May 29.

“Her Jammu programme stands as of now,” the official source said.

In Jammu, she is scheduled to inaugurate a tribal cultural centre of the Gujjar community and also address a rally.

She will be accompanied by Prithviraj Chavan, minister of state in the prime minister’s office and union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Canada beckons Indian students with new education body

Posted: 26 May 2010 11:05 AM PDT

Toronto, May 26 (IANS) In a bid to woo more Indian students to Canadian universities and colleges, former Canadian foreign minister Pierre Pettigrew launched the Canada India Education Council (CIEC) here.

He will serve as the chairman of the new educational body and noted Indo-Canadian lawyer Kam Rathee will be its chairman.

“I was very committed to Canada-India relations when I was the foreign minister and I will bring the same passion to the Canada India Education Council,” said Pettigrew, who also held many other portfolios in the Canadian cabinet till 2006, in his opening remarks Tuesday.

Since Canada gets less than 4,000 Indian students compared to 40,000 going to Australia and 80,000 to the US, he said, “We should tell Indians that Canada is such a unique country. We should tell that our education system will make them much more knowledgeable individuals.”

Kam Rathee, who as former president of the Canada-India Business Council (C-IBC) has taken many educational delegations to India, said the new body will fill the gap in the education field between the two countries.

“Of late, India has been the flavour of international business community, and this includes us who are in the business of education. Recent events in the field of education in India – the bill to right to education and allow foreign universities to set up campuses – reflect a strong surge at the governmental, public and private sector level,” Rathee told reporters.

At the same time, he said, Canada’s most powerful province Ontario, with Toronto as its capital, has decided “to alleviate its deficit by increasing the number of students coming from India. But what is missing is a bridge between the two countries to make this happen…and the CIEC will be that bridge.”

Rathee said: “‘Brand Canada’ is non-existent in India and the CIEC will endeavour to fix it.”

~ Rest Continues Below ~

He said the Canada India Education Council will have a strong “social, legal and physical” presence in both India and Canada to “operate exclusively and strategically within the burgeoning Canada-India education corridor”.

The new body will regularly take education delegations to India and invite Indian educationists to Canada.

Elton John to perform at Morocco festival despite protests

Posted: 26 May 2010 10:16 AM PDT

Los Angeles, May 26 (IANS) Singer Elton John will be performing at Morocco's biggest music festival despite calls by the country's main Islamist party to shelve the British singer because of his homosexuality, say organisers.

“We deal with artists and intellectuals for what they do, without taking into account their private life,” accesshollywood.com quoted Mawazine Festival organizer El Hassan Neffali as saying.

“Somebody's private life is one thing, and their art or creative activities are another,” Neffali added.

Other singers performing during this year's May 21-29 festival include Sting, Mika and Carlos Santana, along with a host of Arab music stars.

The public spat between organisers for the Mawazine Festival and the Justice and Development Party, or PJD, the country's largest authorised Islamist group, illustrates the growing rift between Morocco's Western-leaning authorities and the more conservative Muslim movements that are on the rise in the North African kingdom.

“This singer is famous for his homosexual behaviour and for advocating it. We're a rather open party, but promoting homosexuality is completely unacceptable,” said Mustapha Ramid, a leader and spokesman for the PJD, the biggest opposition party with 40 lawmakers in parliament.

Navjot Sidhu calls for national debate on revenue sharing

Posted: 26 May 2010 10:14 AM PDT

Chandigarh, May 26 (IANS) Cricketer turned politician Navjot Singh Sidhu Wednesday said there was dire need for a national debate on the issue of sharing of revenue between the rich and the poor and added that he would raise the issue in parliament.

“In the past two years the central government has given tax rebates to the tune of Rs.10 lakh crore to the corporate world,” said Sidhu, who is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national secretary.

He added: “Revenue forgone on account of tax sops in 2009-10 amounted to Rs.502,299 crore, which amounted to 79.54 percent of the total central revenue. Whereas in 2008-09, the revenue forgone was Rs.414,099 crore, which was 68.59 percent of the total central revenue.”

Sidhu said that in contrast the total allocation for schemes for the poor under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) was Rs.60,000 crore.

“While the central government shouts from the rooftops about Rs.60,000 crore given for the 70 percent of India’s people, it hides Rs.10 lakh crore gifted to the two per cent rich in the bulky budget documents,” Sidhu said.

He said that there is a dire need for a national debate on the sharing of revenue between the rich and the poor of the country.

“I am going to raise the issue in the next session of parliament. There is too much favouritism for the rich at the cost of the poor. I am not against growth and the rich, but there should be at least 50:50 parity. The government policies are giving rise to social inequity, which is the cause of every problem in the country,” Sidhu added.

Rape by traffic policeman a serious matter: Dikshit

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) The rape of a woman in a moving car allegedly by a constable of the Delhi Traffic Police was a “serious matter” and calls for stringent action against the guilty, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Wednesday.

“We all feel very disturbed about the incident. It is a serious matter. I am sure that stringent action will be taken against the guilty as per rules and regulations,” the chief minister told reporters, commenting on the Sunday night incident.

The traffic policeman, who knew the victim, met her along with his accomplice for dinner. They went on a drive and the two men allegedly raped the woman in the moving car in Connaught Place.

The accused were arrested Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said: “Both the accused are in judicial custody. In addition, suitable departmental action will be taken against the traffic constable.”

Hold — VT — 14-year-old tops in IIT Delhi region

Posted: 26 May 2010 09:35 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) Fourteen-year-old Sahal Kaushik, who holds the 33rd rank at all-India level in the IIT JEE exam, emerged the Delhi region topper in the entrance examination.

At the press conference to honour the toppers, Sahal, who was too shy to speak on stage, handed the mike over to his mother Ruchi Kaushik. But that was just for a while, off the stage, the boy giggled with his friend and answered media questions quite comfortably.

“He mixes where he wants to. He has participated in competitions at the international level and mixed very well with everyone,” says Ruchi. A doctor by profession, Ruchi was her son’s first teacher.

“His basic schooling was mostly at home and I looked after his studies,” Ruchi said.

“We got him admitted for Class 10 boards at the Vandana International School in Dwarka. He did all his studies for Class 11 and 12 from Narayana Institute,” she informed the media persons.

Asked how she felt about her son performing so well at such a young age, Ruchi said: “He was always a very bright child, so it was not a surprise.”

The boy also has to his credit two Asian Physics Olympiad medals — silver for 2009 and bronze for 2010. Sahal was also a member of Asia School Camp at Japan in 2009 and is a scholar of the prestigious Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana.

Talking about his interest, Sahal said: “I want to do research.”

“I will either go for the integrated M.Sc. at IIT Kanpur or for the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research,” he says.

Ruchi supports her son, saying: “He can do what he likes. We have never pressurised our children for anything.”

His mother says that Sahal is apart from other children not only in his performance but also in his interests and hobbies. Sahal is interested in reading historical books and listening to old songs. Asked about his favourite singer, Sahal said: “It is hard to say who is my favourite but I like Kishore Kumar.”

Sahal also breaks the myth of toppers scoring 90 plus in board exams. This topper scored a modest 76 percent in Class 10 and 73 percent in Class 12 board exams.

“He has a sharp brain, does calculations very fast, but fails to express very well on paper. Perhaps that is why he scored less in CBSE exams,” Ruchi said.

Crystal Bowersox made the latest episode of American Idol 2010 a memorable one with her heartfelt rendition of “Up to the Mountain”, written by Patty Griffin. With just a day left for crowning the winner, both the contestants seem to display the best of their talent.

Lee Dewyze’s performed cover of u2’s “Beautiful Day” on Tuesday and has been predicted as the winner by Simon Cowell even before the finale. However, Crystal had remained the frontrunner in the initial weeks of the show, but was later overshadowed by a more confident and energetic Lee.  Bowersox' latest performance “Up to the Mountain” has meanwhile put her back in the spotlight with Cowell terming the song as the night's best.
The winner of American Idol 2010 will get the chance to release their song as a single.

Fish to get dearer with trawling ban ahead

Posted: 26 May 2010 09:06 AM PDT

Thiruvananthapuram, May 26 (IANS) The price of fish, already at a high with a kilo of Seer fish costing Rs.400 as against Rs.250 last year, is set to soar further as the annual trawling ban during the monsoon starts June 15.

For 45 days from June 15, the sea along the Kerala coast extending to 12 nautical miles will become silent as boats and trawlers are beached and fishermen wait for the monsoon fury to subside before going out to sea again.

“The trawling ban will extend for 45 days,” Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told reporters after the weekly cabinet meeting here.

He said no mechanized boats will be allowed to fish.

The ban on fishing during monsoon was first introduced in 1988 with the main aim of fish conservation. The period is the spawning season for many varieties of fish, including shrimp.

Thirty years on, EU and ASEAN seek stronger partnership

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:45 AM PDT

Madrid, May 26 (DPA) The European Union (EU) and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Wednesday pledged to upgrade their cooperation in order to support each other’s integration efforts and to recover from the global crisis.

“We are both evolving very quickly,” Brunei Foreign Minister Mohammed Bolkiah said as foreign ministers from the two blocs marked the 30th anniversary of their official relations at a Madrid meeting.

“Europe and South-East Asia need each other maybe more than ever before,” Bolkiah said.

He was referring to the two blocs’ reforms to step up regional integration – the EU’s Lisbon Treaty and the new ASEAN charter – and the economic crisis.

Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos – whose country holds the rotating EU presidency – called on ASEAN to help the EU dismantle trade barriers, boost investments and reform the global financial system.

The meeting was bringing together foreign ministers from seven of the 10 ASEAN countries, with Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia sending lower-level representatives.

Ministers from about 10 of the 27 EU countries were also attending, as well as EU foreign policy director Catherine Ashton.

The agenda of the meeting included this year’s elections in Myanmar, the date of which has not yet been set.

The EU is hoping to send a mission to Myanmar to discuss the poll, a Spanish senior diplomat said, explaining that the EU would even be willing to send observers to the elections if they respected democratic standards.

Ashton was expected to stress to Myanmar the need to allow the opposition to contest the elections and to free political prisoners, including opposition icon Aung San Suu Kyi, the source explained.

The EU would maintain sanctions against Myanmar while stepping up a dialogue with the regime, because “purely and simply isolating” the country had brought “very few results”, the source said.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle commented on the rising tension between South and North Korea, describing the March sinking of a South Korean warship as an “aggressive military act that cannot be justified in any way”.

“Of course South Korea has our solidarity,” the minister said, calling for an “appropriate and well thought-out” reaction from the international community.

The political turmoil in Thailand was not officially on the agenda, because it was considered an internal Thai matter. However, Bangkok was expected to inform the EU about the situation in the country.

The ministers were due to discuss a large number of issues, among them climate change, terrorism, piracy, nuclear non-proliferation, natural disasters, and EU and ASEAN relations with China.

ASEAN and the EU are each other’s third-largest trade partners, according to figures given by Moratinos.

ASEAN comprises Brunei, Myanmar, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Federer rides out the rain for Paris victory

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:29 AM PDT

Paris, May 26 (DPA) Roger Federer dealt calmly with a pair of rain interruptions, not letting the weather interfere with his concentration in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, 6-4 defeat Wednesday of Colombian Alejandro Falla to reach the third round of the French Open.

The Swiss top seed, who won the Roland Garros title for the first time in his career a year ago, was joined as a winner by last year’s finalist Robin Soderling, who crushed American Taylor Dent 6-0, 6-1, 6-1.

Three more men’s seeds ducked the weather to advance.

French favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the number eight, beat rising compatriot Josselin Ouanna 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 while Croatian tenth seed Marin Cilic defeated Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

Tsonga said it was tough playing his good friend, but the seed showed no mercy.

“I thought I have to start playing with a lot of intensity, grab him by the throat. I didn’t want him to do too much, and frankly, it was a good start from my side,” he said.

“This weighed a lot on the whole match.”

Russian 11th seed Mikhail Youzhny overcame an early stutter to defeat Slovenian Lukas Lacko 6-7 (8-6), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

Federer was interrupted by brief bouts of rain as the forecast of poorer weather came true after days of hot sunshine in the capital.

The Swiss improved to 3-0 in the series with the 70th-ranked Falla, with all matches played at Grand Slams. Federer won his 20th match of the season as he finished on the first of three match point as the South American returned long.

“Falla is a dangerous opponent, I knew I had to win the first set to have best chances of winning,” said Federer. “I’m very content with my game right now.

“During the rain break I spoke with my coach and we decided that I needed to play more aggressive when we returned.”

Soderling, who lost the 2009 decider to Roger Federer, showed no mercy in the hammering of Dent which took just 71 minutes and finished before a concurrent women’s match.

Fifth seed Soderling broke his American opponent eight times while fighting off four break points against his serve.

The Swede, who last played Dent in 2004, improved to 11-6 in Paris as he bids for the sixth title of his career.

Dent, who has been tormented by back problems which required surgery and kept him off the ATP for months on end several seasons back, last competed in Paris six years ago and had never been to the second round previously.

The Californian has now lost his last 10 matches against top 10 opposition.

Women’s second seed Venus Williams, her career as a fashion designer starting to rival her tennis, displayed another new lace dress as she beat Spain’s Arantxa Santonja 6-2, 6-4.

“The courts were playing slower than my first round, so definitely had to work the point a little more,” said the American. “She’s scrappy, so I did not know exactly what ball to expect.

“That definitely kept me on my toes. Overall today I just thought I played well on the bigger points, especially on my serve. That was key.”

Curtain to come down on Mahindra United Thursday

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:27 AM PDT

Mumbai, May 26 (IANS) After 48 years of existence, the curtain will ring down on famed Mumbai soccer club Mahindra United who face JCT in their last match of the I-League here Thursday.

The club management took the decision earlier this month, at a time when the team was in the title hunt, to disband the club and focus on grassroots level football came. It came as a shocker not only for fans but also footballers, who are now finding it tough to get a team.

On Thursday, the Cooperage will see the last of the Mahindra and team manager Henry Menezes said that he would like his boys to end in style as a win will help them to finish fourth.

“It is an emotional moment for everybody and we would like to end a glorious chapter in Indian football on a winning note,” said Menezes, a former India goalkeeper.

Coach David Booth feels that this is the last chance for his players to leave a long lasting impression in the minds of the fans.

“During the last several weeks, 95 per cent of the players have received contracts elsewhere, so there is no excuse for the lack of performance in recent games,” Booth said.

The Englishman, however, was unhappy with the performance of his boys in the second half of the league.

“I’m surprised when you consider that the same group of players lost just one game in 20 and then only draw one of the next five,” he added.

Abu Dhabi, May 26 (IANS/WAM) The Abu Dhabi Police have urged people to remain alert and follow the safety rules to avoid fire accidents as the soaring summer heat increases the risk of such disasters.

Mishaps during summer increase as more people use electric devices, some of low quality, for cooling and other purposes.

Court orders police probe into MCD’s ‘ghost’ employees

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:15 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed city police chief Y.S. Dadwal to conduct an independent inquiry into the ‘ghost’ employees scam in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) after allegations that a probe by the civic agency would not be proper.

A division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Madan B. Lokur directed the police commissioner to hold a detailed inquiry into allegations that the civic agency has on its rolls employees who do not exist and said: “You (MCD) can’t be judge of your own cause.”

The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Jagrook Welfare Society through counsel C.S. Parashar, seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry or an independent agency’s probe into the scam.

After a media report in November, the MCD revealed that there were 22,853 gardeners and sweepers as ‘ghost’ employees on its payrolls and admitted it was an administrative lapse that cost the civic body Rs.17 crore every month.

The court slammed the MCD May 12 for “concealing facts” in its affidavit on money paid to ‘ghost’ employees.

Senior advocate Ravi Shankar Prasad, appearing for MCD, said: “The whole confusion peeped (sic) in due to the installation of the biometric system (for attendance) as some of the employees were left out while installation of the system.

“Our sole motto of installing these biometric system is to bring in transparency,” Prasad said.

The high court has now directed the police to submit the investigation report within two months and slated the matter for hearing Aug 25.

Strauss ask teammates to be vigilant about match-fixing

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

London, May 26 (IANS) England Test captain Andrew Strauss has asked his teammates to come forward and report any suspected attempts at match fixing as it is the players duty to curb the menace.

Strauss returns for the first Test against Bangladesh at the Lord’s Thursday amid allegations from an unnamed county player that he was approached by an Indian bookmaker to influence a one-day game this season.

The player has remained anonymous because of fears about his safety. The Professional Cricketers’ Association is liaising with the International Cricket Council’s anti-corruption unit on his behalf.

“We have a duty if we hear of (match fixing) in domestic cricket or with England to come forward and report it straight away. For players to be tempted to take bookmakers’ money is ludicrous. From my experience, I haven’t seen anything in the Middlesex dressing room or had any reason to suspect that a game I have played in has been fixed in any way. If it is happening, it needs to be stamped out straight away,” Strauss was quoted as saying in the Guardian Wednesday.

The warning last week by Lord Condon, the outgoing head of the anti-corruption unit, that match-fixing and spot-fixing – where bets are placed on individual moments of a game – represent a risk to English domestic cricket comes less than a week before the start of England’s Twenty20 tournament.

Strauss said he was happy to be back in the side after England won the World Twenty20 under Paul Collingwood.

“I’m excited to be back among the group again,” he said.

“After all they have achieved, there is a real vibrancy in the team. It is important that I give good, strong leadership. As for my batting, hopefully I can hit the ground running.”
