Asian Investment – Approaches to the Market: Pan-Asian Funds

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 01:38 PM PDT

I attended a recent Investment in China and India Summit hosted by Financial Research Associates  I will use this forum to share some of the slide/insights that were given at this summit for the benefit of those hoping/thinking/planning on investing in an Asian country – China, India or Japan.

Pan-Asian funds usually are staffed with more experienced personnel and have the flexibility to redistribute country allocations within Asia in response to political, currency, or legal issues.

Most of the large Pan-Asian funds, because of their size, are targeted at the large buyout market, often investing in globally focused companies.

For those specifically interested in Indian or Chinese exposure, Pan-Asian funds are not the best vehicle.

Sachin Tendulkar Creates Record

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 05:34 AM PDT

94988.11

Sachin Tendulkar of India overtook retired West Indian captain Brian Lara on Friday to become Test cricket’s highest run-getter.

Tendulkar,35, surpassed Brian Lara’s total of 11,953 runs from 131 Tests when he scored 15 on the first day of the second Test against Australia at the Mohali , He made 88 before being caught in the slips off debutante pace bowler Peter Siddle with the second new ball, returning to the pavilion with 12,027 runs against his name.

Tendulkar, a veteran of 152 Tests, is already the world’s top scorer in one-day internationals (16,361 runs), and has more Test (39) and one-day (42) centuries than any other batsman.

He is also the most senior active cricketer, having made his Test debut as a 16-year-old on November 15, 1989 against Pakistan in Karachi.

"It is a good achievement because it took 19 years to reach there," Tendulkar said in a television interview after the day’s play.

"Sourav (Ganguly) and me were focused on batting out the day. I did not really think of the record too many times. I try to keep the records out of my mind and my aim is mainly to contribute.

"But when you come near a record, subconsciously you think about it, but the important thing is to play your best for the country.

"It’s nice that it’s come at the right time because the Australians are a quality opposition.

"I planned to stay till the end but that did not happen. I thought I did not use my feet well but that’s the beauty of the game.

Child ‘Playmates’ Booming Business

Posted: 13 Sep 2010 01:34 AM PDT

Hired Indian kids are known as "playmates" for babies or "household helps."

Recruiters rationalize that they "are doing something noble by helping feed and clothe poor village children."

Others are just looking for a profit – "earning between 3,000 and 10,000 rupees per child, as well as a percentage of the child's monthly wages."
child.labor.jpg
The children make around 100 rupees a month, ($2.25) depending on their chores.

Indian government estimates that there are about 12 million children under 14 that are employed. Children activists say it is much more…maybe 5 times more.

Nevertheless, children are employed as maids, slaves, little worker bees and given just enough to subsist on.

Villagers are deceived into thinking their children will be given a better life. The moms and dads who give up their children don't know any better.

I worked with a friend in India to buy back many of the children who were sold into slavery. Some parents did NOT want their children back even though they knew the truth.

We made arrangements to provide for the returned children and other villagers became jealous and refused to allow the children to come home.

The problem is not that children become laborers. The problem is that India's village people are not educated enough to stop having and selling their youngsters.

Some of the children we bought back are grown now. These former 'child slaves' know first hand the experience they went through. Their voice is much more powerful than mine.

It may take several generations…but if enough of these children are returned, educated and become advocates, then will changes take place.

Until that time, child labor will continue to thrive in India.

Do you think there is another way to prevent child labor?
