Roaming charges to go away soon ?

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 09:19 PM PDT

According to this ET report, DoT panel has recommended to abolish roaming charges for the customers travelling outside their home circle. As a first step towards this, the panel has recommended to divide the country into four regions (East, West, North & South) and thus remove the roaming charges when the customers are traveling within a region.

At present the country is divided into 22 circles and telecom companies are charging the customers Rs. 1.4 / min (Local incoming) to Rs. 2.5 / min (STD Outgoing) when the customer is travelling outside his/her home circle. This constitutes a major chunk of revenue for the telecom operators as they are earning close to Rs. 12,000 crore annually from these charges.

As expected, telcos are strongly opposing against this move as this will hit their revenues strongly and will try to put this move in backseat as they are doing with the Mobile number portability plan. DoT panel which recommended this plan hasnt specify any time frame for the merger of all circles into four region and then to single region but is expected to ask TRAI to work out the modalities for this. Let us hope this will happen soon.

[First Look] Nokia launches C5-03, a budget Symbian touchscreen phone

Posted: 14 Oct 2010 05:26 PM PDT

In the C5 series of budget phones, the Nokia C5-03 is another one however those crafty Finns have added a dash of quality by sticking a touchscreen, Wi-Fi and 3G on it at a low price.  The 3.2-inch touchscreen of the C5-03 is the clunky resistive kind that might be familiar with from old devices such as the Nokia 5800. And the newer, pricier Symbian handsets such as the X6 generally sport capacitive touchscreens. There’s no Symbian 3 love here either and the C5-03 is trapped with the dated Symbian S60 5th edition OS. The C5-03 comes with Wi-Fi, a significant upgrade from the Nokia C5 that only had 3G.

A decent 5-megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom is available however no flash is present. It will come with a compass and assisted GPS, with free Ovi Maps and there’s just 40MB of memory but it supports microSD cards up to 16GB.In weight and size, the C5-03 is similar to the upcoming C6-01, the upcoming Symbian 3 phone that will land in the UK before Christmas for around £220. The C5-03 is available in white, black, lime green and blue.

Nokia keeps churning out the handsets, with the Touch and Type X3 and C3 anticipated this year, but things have changed dramatically in the last few months. Android has the advantage of a huge number of apps and is generally more user-friendly than Symbian. The phone when launched (mostly in the last quarter) in India will be priced around Rs. 10,000.
