Irrfan Khan feels lucky to get good roles in foreign films

Irrfan Khan feels lucky to get good roles in foreign filmsActor Irrfan Khan, who wowed the international audiences with his performances in "A Mighty Heart" and "Slumdog Millionaire", says he is lucky to have bagged good roles in foreign films and wants to work with director Danny Boyle again.

"I find myself very fortunate. The kind of films I chose in the West, I won't get it anywhere," Irrfan told IANS in an interview.

The actor says he wants to team up with "Slumdog..." director Danny Boyle again.

"There are many other directors I would like to work with like the guy who made 'Babel' (Alejandro González Inárritu). I would also like to work with Danny Boyle again. There are many. I was lucky that I got to work with directors like Mira Nair and Asif Kapadia," he said, adding that he would also like to work with director Martin Scorsese.

The actor is also all praise for the western critics. "In the west, they have the capability to discriminate between a role and what an actor adds to that role.

"I did a very insignificant role in 'Darjeeling Limited' - I had two shots but when the film came out, the critics wrote two paragraphs about that scene," the 47-year-old actor said.

The actor, who was here for the world premiere of Tigmanshu Dhulia's "Paan Singh Tomar", says the Indian cinema is witnessing an interesting phase - thanks to the arrival of new breed of filmmakers and the audiences.

"This is a very interesting phase for our cinema as we are being able to make films like 'Paan Singh Tomar'. There is a whole new generation - new breed of filmmakers and viewers that have come out," Irrfan said.

"In Hollywood, they take an issue and turn it into a very engaging and entertaining film. We have not been able to do it. Earlier, Guru Dutt, K. Asif and Mehboob Khan were capable of doing it.

"But after that, there was degeneration and films were mere empty entertainers, the makers were not able to incorporate layers in the scripts. But again, we are trying to achieve that by making films that are not solely dependent on glamour. The films talk about some issue like 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Taare Zameen Par'," he said.

"Paan Singh Tomar" is inspired by the real life story of steeplechase runner Paan Singh who won many medals and created records but was forced by circumstances to pick up the gun and wreak havoc in the Chambal valley.

"This is a very interesting story. What fascinated me is the fact that the guy died but his story refuses to die. He was a national record holder, but there is no record about him. We tried to research about him, but no trace of him, this is how our system works.

"It's a very engaging drama about how he went into the Army, how he joined sports from there, how his life takes a turn and he did something unexpected. He ran for the country, but after some time the country chose to run after him and eliminate him," he said.

Irrfan says the script provided enough material for him to essay the role as realistically as possible.

"I got enough material in the script. His wife, his son and his coach are alive. I met some of them. I also met some dacoits who were with him. But for me, the physical aspect was more important - like learning the techniques of steeplechase race as there is a certain technique to do hurdle race, so I had to learn that.

"Then the language. It's very easy to copy how people speak in Madhya Pradesh, but our responsibility is to bring the accent and at the same time make it understandable for the audience," said the actor, who injured himself while shooting the film.

"I tore my right leg ligament and it happened while I was jumping. The height wasn't much but I fell and hurt myself."

While shooting for the film, he fell in love with the Chambal valley, a home to rebels and bandits.

"Chambal is an excellent place. If this place would have been in America, it would have been the most popular tourist place. It's so beautiful, so enigmatic and so mysterious - it's breathtaking," he said.

The actor's forthcoming Hindi films are "Ye Saali Zindagi" and "Saat Khoon Maaf".

Freida Pinto ready to act in Bollywood

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 04:13 AM PDT

Freida Pinto ready to act in BollywoodFreida Pinto is out to prove she's no one-film wonder with her performance in "Miral", based on Palestinian journalist Rula Jebreal's semi-autobiographical novel. The actress believes in speaking through her work and says she won't mind working in an Indian film -- provided she falls in love with the script.

"If Indian films came my way and I loved the script, I would say yes. Quite contrary to what people believe, I haven't said yes to every international script that has come my way. I have said no to quite a few. Similarly, unless and until I fall in love with the Indian script, I will not do it," Freida told IANS in an interview here.

Screened in the Narrative competition section at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, "Miral" that opens in Jerusalem in 1948 is the true story of Hind Husseini, who turns her family home into the Dar Al-Tifl Al-Arabi Institute, providing hope and education to orphans, especially girls. Freida's character too grows up in the same orphanage.

The film is directed by American artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel and Freida says he cast her after seeing her in "Slumdog Millionaire".

"I auditioned for it, Danny Boyle put me on tape for this because Julian requested us while we were doing a press junket for 'Slumdog Millionaire' in LA.

"I read the script and I completely fell in love with it. I felt this story definitely needed to be told to the world. I was getting an opportunity to be part of a story that talks about peace, so why not? That's how the film happened."

The 26-year-old speaks English with a Palestinian accent in the war film. "I'm lucky, I can do accents well. I can listen and I can repeat what people say. So Julian set me on a mission - I didn't have an accent coach, I had real people to learn from. I went to the old city of Jerusalem, stayed with a Palestinian family for eight days.

"I also went to the orphanage where Rula grew up. I picked up whatever I could from the students and local people. I recorded everything and found out words that are common and found my own accent. That's my take on my Palestinian accent," she said.

The actress says she doesn't have to prove anything to anybody back home and hopes Indians watch "Miral" since it talks about peace.

"I never had to prove myself while doing 'Slumdog…' either. When the film went out, it did the best it could and did really well and that's the story of my life. I didn't have to go out of my way to prove a point in my first film, I don't have to do it in any film," said Freida.

"I would definitely want to show 'Miral' to India, but not to prove a point...the film (is) about peace which is so relevant in my country and in the countries that are warring or have some kind of conflict with neighbouring countries," she said.

Freida also got lucky to work with star Hollywood filmmaker Woody Allen in "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger".

"I auditioned for Woody Allen's film too, quite contrary to what people think that these roles just fell in my lap. He saw me in 'Slumdog Millionaire' and thought I would be great in that part. But he made me audition because he needed to know I'd be able to do it.

"He is definitely very unique and a genius in what he does. What's most amazing about him is that he will take up serious and disturbing topics and punch the right amount of humour in it, which makes the film so much enjoyable and less depressing."

So what are the other international projects in her kitty?

"I have worked with Tarsem Singh in 'Immortals'. It's a Greek epic. I play Phaedra, the oracle. Again there is no ethnicity to the character - she could be from any part of the world. The film is so multicultural that we never talk about ethnicity, though we talk about Greek places. We shot in a studio in Montreal and it's in English. I did speak a bit of ancient Greek," she said.

"I also did a film called 'Rise Of The Apes' with Rupert Wyatt. It's a prequel to 'Planet of the Apes'," Freida said.

"Since I've taken acting as my profession, my ambition is to keep doing it and keep getting better. So I guess, my ambition is to enjoy life and enjoy my work as well," she concluded.

'The Other Guys' Movie Review

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 04:06 AM PDT

'The Other Guys' Movie ReviewDirector: Adam McKay; Actors: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Michael Keaton; Rating:***

Cinema, as life, is full of cliches. However, what makes both of them interesting is the creative and interesting way in which it is used. "The Other Guys" is full of cliche, but handled in a way that makes them funny.

Allen (Ferrell) and Terry (Wahlberg) are two cops in New York Police department, who are the laughing stock of their department. Allen is nerdy, while Terry has anger management issues. After the 'funny' demise of two star cops there's competition about who will fill their gaps.

After many false starts where they further become the butt of jokes, they finally discover their groove as individual cops and as a team. What their pointless investigation seems to be leading is into the mouth of a big corporate scandal.

The strength of the film is not its originality. Two nerdy cops proving heroes despite the odds have been done to death in both the comedy and the action genre, and in the action-comedy genre which this one is. Its strength is in three things -- a well- written screenplay, expert direction by Adam McKay (also its writer) and the comic timing of Ferrell and Wahlberg, which raises many chuckles and quite a few laughs.

Some scenes are outright hilarious -- the lion and tuna fight between the partners, the wooden gun, the villains taking away their shoes everytime they catch them and the third party exchange of sexual communication with an old woman as the messenger. A much older looking Michael Keaton as their captain who also moonlights as a sales executive adds to the fun.

Cameos by Samuel Jackson and Dwayne Johnson add to the zing. Eva Mendes has a small role and adds to Terry's amazement about his nerdy cop getting all the hot chicks.

"The Other Guys" proves that you don't necessarily have to be original to be funny. All you got to do is be creative with cliches. That is a lesson many filmmakers, both in Hollywood and Bollywood, would do well to remember.

Kamya Punjabi says her motive in life is not just to make money

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 04:02 AM PDT

Kamya Punjabi says her motive in life is not just to make moneyTelevision actress Kamya Punjabi, popularly known as Sindoora of "Banoo Main Teri Dulhaan", insists that her motive in life is not just to make money but to also do work that gives her satisfaction.

"My motive is not just to earn money. As an actor, I have always tried to play different roles which gives me satisfaction. This is the reason why I have been choosy about my work. I like to experiment with my roles," Kamya told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

Kamya is known as the scheming vamp of television for essaying negative roles in shows like "Reth", "Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani" and "Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki". Her character as Sindoora Singh in "Banoo Main...." won her the Indian telly Award for best actor in a negative role.

However, she has also played positive roles in "Piya Ka Ghar" and "Kyun Hota Hai Pyaar". She was also seen doing stand-up comedy in "Comedy Circus".

Last seen in "Jeet Jayenge Hum", Kamya has returned to the small screen with Star Plus' new show "Maryaada", where she plays the role of Uttara. The show portrays the life of four women, whose lives are full of trials and tribulations, lies, deceit and betrayal.

"This is the kind of role I have never done before. I play Uttara. She is young, lively, innocent but at the same time upset with her life. Her husband doesn't treat her well. This show is different from the typical saas-bahu sagas where the mother-in-law is constantly torturing her daughter-in-law.

"I hate crying but this is a show where I am actually enjoying shedding tears because the concept is so appealing," she added.

Kamya is married to assistant director of Vishesh Film Bunty Negi and is mother to one-year-old daughter Aarah.

So how does she balances her work and personal life?

"I have always balanced my personal and professional life. It is true that it becomes difficult with such a young child but my mother will be taking care of her," she said.

'Rakta Charitra' Movie Review

Posted: 23 Oct 2010 03:28 AM PDT

'Rakta Charitra' Movie ReviewFilm: "Rakta Charitra"; Starring: Vivek Oberoi, Shatrughan Sinha, Abhimanyu Singh, Radhika Apte, Zarina Wahab; Directed by: Ram Gopal Varma; Rating: *** ½

Ram Gopal Varma's "Rakta Charitra" is arguably the most violent Indian film ever made. Human beings get their heads crushed in sugarcane grinders (this sequence comes long before Darshan Zariwala playing a contented cop, sucks benignly on a piece of sugarcane), heads are crushed with large boulders (easy enough, considering the film is shot on rugged rocky terrain), legs and hands are chopped off with sickles and hatchets… In brief, human life seems to be snuffed purely for anarchic purposes.

The violence in Varma's new film could be considered overpowering in another context. Not here. Not this time. Violent tension is the crux and the core spirit of "Rakta Charitra". You cannot take away the arms from the man, unless it's one of those aforementioned limb-choppers at work again. Ouch.

Returning to a territory that Ramu knows by heart (if heart is the space you can mention in this film's extra-aggressive context), the director has fashioned a bludgeoning homage to Coppola's "The Godfather". This is the Sicilian mafia transposed with frenetic fluency into the semi-rural Andhra milieu where the caste system fosters the most barbaric acts of violence that man has ever conceived.

Varma doesn't flinch from the sight of unmitigated brutality. Often you wonder if the dark recesses of the subconscious that Varma manifests are actually the spaces that the director enjoys peering into. But then when you look closer into the eyes of his ravaged and ravaging characters, you see profound regret and fear barely discernible to the naked eye.

As usual, Varma's cameraman (Amol Rathod) treats the masculine hinterland like a voyager walking through virgin territory with proprietorial arrogance. The semi-rural setting is captured in lazy greys and toasted browns. These are colours that are typical of Varma's badland where marauders from the world of politics and crime rub shoulders.

The mayhem is disturbing in its majesty. Remarkably Varma avoids slow-motion slayings. The hard-hitting impact of the killings comes from the normal tone and unadorned shot takings which signify a disturbance in the environment too deep to be dramatized and yet too fascinating to be ignored.

In one sequence while the villain Bukka (Abhimanyu Singh, outstanding) crushes a victim's leg, Bukka's mother casually leaves for a prayer meeting turning around to ask her son if he'd like to accompany her. Humour in unique form?

Drama there is in plenty in the narrative. Taking Coppola to the Naxalite (Maoist) belt couldn't be easy. Varma has earlier taken "The Godfather" to the underworld (in "Company") and to the world of extra-constitutional politics ("Sarkar"). In fact, many of the domestic scenes in "Rakta Charitra" with the ladies of the house cooking and serving meals impervious to the murderous discussions on the dining table, remind you of "Sarkar".

However, the familiar tone and territory do not assume a lack of novelty in the narrative. Though Ramu walks the known path in "Rakta Charitra", he nonetheless infuses the drama with layers of virgin velocity. The introduction of Shatrughan Sinha's character as a wily star-politician who uses Pratap (Vivek Oberoi) to settle his own scores, comes at a very clever juncture in the plot when the narrative could lose momentum. Sinha's imperious politician's part is an act of bravura done as a sly homage to Andhra Pradesh's immortal neta N.T. Rama Rao.

Besides Shatrughan Sinha, Zarina Wahab, Sushant Singh, Ashwini Kalsekar and the unknown actor Omkar who plays the Muslim casualty of Bukka's barbarism are unforgettable in their expressions of elemental angst.

Some sequences such as the villain Bukka's murder in a congested apartment in Hyderabad are done with such savage grace that you wonder if the director has entered the territory to savour its shock-value along with the audience.

The film's all-too-familiar drama of doom and depravity is delineated with demoniacal passion. While Vivek Oberoi turns in a restrained performance, aligned and aggrandized by a smouldering sense of injustice and vendetta, Abhimanyu Singh as his utterly depraved adversary turns in an amazing animalistic performance.

Varma excels at conveying the despair of the damned. Not much room for tenderness here. But hang on. Varma weaves a sweet little love story between our outlawed hero Pratap and his college sweetheart (Radhika Apte, expressive and endearing). How he creates space for sensitivity in a canvas cluttered with brutal creatures, is a miracle.

Yes, Ram Gopal Varma is back in ferocious form. Not much to rejoice here. The joy of watching a film on people on such a joyless journey into self-destruction is in picking those shards of broken glass out of our savagely mutilated social order.

And yes there's the joy of watching Vivek Oberoi return to the intense form he had displayed in his debut performance in Varma's "Company".

Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra to shoot for Don 2 in BerlinBollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan reveals he dreams of dating as many girls as possible while shooting here for "Don 2". Priyanka Chopra says she would love to walk around the streets of Berlin she finds so full of amazing energy. Film director and actor Farhan Akhtar said he is crazy about the architecture of the city.

They made these points at a press conference held Friday where Shah Rukh repeated 'achtung' (careful) and 'danke' (thanks) and said that Berlin was chosen as location for "Don 2" because the film demanded a more realistic backdrop, unlike some of his other films shot in more fairy tale like environments of countries like Switzerland.

The making of "Don 2" opens a new chapter in the ongoing love affair between Bollywood and Berlin. "Don 2" is being made with financial support from the Medienboard Berlin Brandenburg. The Indo-German production is being shot in the German capital and hundreds of Bollywood fans from around Europe have descended on the city.

The entire crew and cast of "Don 2" are in the German capital to film for about 50 days at a cost of more than six million euros.

The stars began shooting two weeks ago at several famous landmarks in the city like the great Cathedral, and the car chase took the crew through the streets around Checkpoint Charley.

Shah Rukh's character in "Don 2" is of a bad man who is very lovable.

German actor Florian Lukas is relieved that he does not have to dance in the film but is very proud to be acting in an Indian film and excited about his role in "Don 2".

More and more Indian films have been screened at European film festivals in recent times, particularly at the Berlinale, the most popular of all the film festivals held around the world. Dorothee Wenner, Berlinale's curator for Asian and African cinema, is delighted that Berlin promises not just to be a locale in "Don 2" but is treated as a character.

Wenner is responsible for first inviting Shah Rukh Khan to the Berlinale in 2007 when "Om Shanti Om" was screened here. "My Name is Khan" was showcased at the Berlinale 2010.

More Shah Rukh Khan fans are expected in the city Nov 2 when the actor celebrates his birthday in the German capital.

Lindsay Lohan escape jail

Lindsay Lohan escape jailHollywood actress Lindsay Lohan has escaped further jail, but been ordered to return to rehab to continue her drug treatment until the new year.

She had appeared in front of a judge late last month over allegations that she failed two court-ordered drug tests and was told to spend a month in prison, but walked free after posting $300,000 bail.

The "Mean Girls" star subsequently checked herself into the Betty Ford clinic in Rancho Mirage, California and only left the centre in the early hours of Friday in preparation for her court hearing, reports imdb.com.

Lohan appeared before Judge Elden Fox at the Beverly Hills Courthouse in Los Angeles, Friday when she faced a three-month jail term. The judge has decided to keep the troubled star in a drug programme to help her kick her addictions once and for all.

"You are an addict. I hope you understand that," he told Lohan.

The actress nodded in response and thanked Judge Fox for his lenient sentence.

Lohan has been ordered to stay in rehab until at least Jan 3 - meaning she will be spending the upcoming Christmas holidays in treatment. She will undergo random drug testing upon her release until her next court date Feb 25.

Lindsay Lohan fears for her fashion lineHollywood actress Lindsay Lohan fears her extended stay in rehab will ruin her movie career and make her fashion line "6126 Collection" collapse.

The "Mean Girls" star appeared in Beverly Hills Courthouse in Los Angeles Friday when Judge Elden Fox ruled she had violated her probation by failing two mandatory drug tests in September.

Contactmusic.com reports, he rejected the prosecution's suggested three-month jail term and ordered the actress to return to the Betty Ford clinic in Rancho Mirage, California to continue battling the drug demon until January.

In the probation department papers submitted to court Friday, the officer states: "The defendant says her clothing line is falling apart because she is not available to monitor the product."

However, Lohan's probation adviser insists rehab is the best option for the actress, claiming she "needs to continue to work on her issues in order to save her life".

Willow, who is also an aspiring actress and starred with her father in "I Am Legend", revealed that the idea for the Warriorettes, the gang she dances with in the video for "Whip My Hair", was mother Jada Pinkett Smith's idea.
