“China – How Good a Friend to the US is it?” plus 5 more

China – How Good a Friend to the US is it?

Posted: 07 Nov 2010 12:23 AM PDT

Opinion leaders and the general public were surveyed recently.  One of the things both groups were asked to do was "Rate China as an Ally."

Opinion leaders (nearly 60%) thought more highly of China than did the general public (less than 50%).

People in the know or people who influence others, it seems, find China to be more reliable than the general popluation.

If China is such a reliable ally, why are they always on the opposite side of issues at, for example, UN security issues?

I heard a while back that one reason China does this is so that it will have leverage against the US when negotiating in other areas.

China is big enough and now supplies enough to the world that it knows the world depends on its manufacturing capability. China is secure in its relationships and frankly does not care what other countries do, unless it means to stop buying perhaps. And even then, new customers are lined up.

In the end, if China can be on the other side of an issue from the US, it will.

I don’t think China is an ally.

As a reminder – these results and the results in other similar posts are from the Committee of 100 survey of American Attitudes toward China conducted this year (2006).

5 Facts About Taiwan Computer Usage

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 04:20 PM PDT

A Taiwan-based consultancy group stopped more than 26,000 people on the street to ask them about computer usage at home.

The results –

1. 75% of houses in Taiwan are wired to the Net…up 4% from last year.

2. Each home has 1.5 computers. The .5 PC in home is still on dial-up.

3. 73% of Internet users in Taiwan use MSN on-line chat.taiwan.jpg

4. 33% of Taiwanese netizens use on-line phone services – Skype…

5. 45% of Taiwanese shop online up 37% from last year.

Taiwan is a small country. It is not hard to get relays, and cables throughout the whole island such that everybody can get online. No doubt, the 25% that are not online are homes with oldsters who aren't interested.

Chollywood Box Office Receipts Expand $75 million in 2006

Posted: 06 Nov 2010 12:19 PM PDT

Chollywood saw a 600 million yuan ($75 million) growth in box office receipts this year over last year.

Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and company probably made that much money last year.

Still, Chollywood is growing. More cinemas are being built. More large budget (by Chinese standards) are being made.

And, of course, more Chinese can afford to go to the movies.chollywood.jpg

The difference between Chollywood and Hollywood, however, is that moviegoers on both sides of the pond want to see Hollywood flicks, whereas, only Chinese will watch Chinese movies.

Chinese moviemakere have stories to tell, great acting and special effects.  But, the producers will be hard pressed to get English speakers to want to 'read' their movies.

Chinese don't mind reading subscript or watching dubbed movies. Americans, for good or for bad, do NOT want to watch a dubbed movie…Passion of the Christ was an exception.

If Chollywood would really like to make some money, they need to find a way to appeal to people with the bucks…the Americans…
