British Prime Minister Mr. Gordon Brown has tendered his resignation. His resignation has ended the rule of Center-Left Labour Party that had been enjoying the power for last 13 years. On this occasion Gordon Brown declared conservative leader Mr. David Cameron his successor.

In Parliamentary election conducted in Britain labour party of British PM could not do well enough to secure their place as the party in the center. In these elections conservatives did awesome job and won most of the seats but despite this they could not get the majority. In this whole procedure labour party bagged the second spot and Liberal Democrats remained on third position.

Both Labour and Conservative Party put their best efforts in order to cajole liberal democrats for their support. But on Monday it became crystal clear as well as public that labour party has lost so British PM Mr. Gordon Brown will have to tender his resignation.

Today Mr. Gordon Brown told to our trustworthy sources that his intention is to tender his resignation to the queen. In this regard information has been sent to the queen's private secretary.

Brown looked highly emotional as he has to vacate his Downing Street residence for the opposition leader. All the vents took place in sequential manner as well as according to the British Constitution's manner. After releasing his statement entire family decided to have a small photo session before saying good bye to Downing street residence for Prime Minster.

Brown's statement made one thing very clear that Liberal Democrats and Conservatives had agreed to share some power in the center. It may be sort of power-sharing agreement between the two parties. But its word to word details have still not been made public.

According to the senior Conservative William Hague told the reporters immediately after the release of Brown's statement that he and his team had some recommendations to offer for party members.

Earlier, British currency jumped by one percent against the dollar. Moreover government kept on relying on reports that were showing the deal imminent between conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

British stock market experts believe that markets is in the need of resolution and favor for conservative-led government because due to this it will move swiftly.

These days Britain is coming out of the bad effects of its worst recession since Second World War. So far as analysts are concerned so they think that only a strong and potential government can deal with the deficit efficaciously and provide protection to Britain’s triple-A credit rating.

Earlier Liberal Democrats had decided to support Labour party but all of sudden British Prime Minister shocked everyone by stating that he is likely to step down from his post of prime minister in the months to come.

This move was taken because their main aim was to temp the attention of Liberal Democrats away from the Conservatives Party so that there can be an alliance of labour party and Lib Dems. So now all British nationals are all set to welcome their new conservative Prime Minister Mr. David Cameron.

Anand cements place among all-time greats of chess (Profile)

Posted: 11 May 2010 11:23 AM PDT

Chess players are by nature a sensitive lot. The slightest of things upset them – even the colour of the chair they sit on! So, to be forced to travel by road for 40 hours on the eve of the World Championship match would without doubt have been a trying time for one defending his world title. But not for Viswanathan Anand.

With volcanic ash from Iceland forcing a suspension of flights all Europe and the World Chess Championships organisers refusing to change the dates, Anand travelled by road to reach Sofia, Bulgaria, the venue of the world championship, to meet Veselin Topalov.

Anand lost the first game to Topalov, but quickly found his feet, bounced back and won the next two games. He held the lead past the midway stage and held his nerve when Topalov equalized in game eight. Then came the cruncher in game 12 where Topalov held the advantage of white pieces, but Anand came out with flying colours.

Showing a level of maturity that has come with age and experience, Anand chose a practical opening – the Queen’s Gambit Declined Lasker Variation widely considered a safe opening for black – and then proceeded to dismantle the normally aggressive Topalov to win 6.5-5.5 and retain the undisputed world title for the third time.

Before the latest win, he won in 2007 and 2008. And even before that in 2000 he won the title for the first time in a knockout format.

Widely considered as the greatest Indian sportsman, Anand, born Dec 11, 1969, has been among the game’s elite for more almost two decades. Now with world title in virtually all formats – knockout, tournament and matchplay – he has legitimate reasons to stake a claim to being one of the all-time greats in his sport.

Not till a few months before defending his title against Kramnik in 2008 when he fell to No.5, Anand was always in the top-3 of the world for almost 15 years.

In 2007 World Chess Championship in Mexico City, Anand won the eight-player, double round robin tournament with a total of nine points out of 14, with a total of 4 wins and 10 draws. Anand was the only undefeated player in the tournament.

~ Rest Continues Below ~

In 2008, he successfully defended the title against the previous world champion, Vladimir Kramnik, beating the Russian in the famous Battle of Bonn 6.5-4.5 with one game to spare in the 12-game final.

Now the win 6.5-5.5 over Topalov in 2010 adds lustre to his six chess Oscars, the last of which came in 2008. Anand has won the Chess Oscar – an award given by polling votes from the global chess fraternity, including players and best writers across the world – a record six times with the wins coming in 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. His six Oscars make him the best ever, with Kasparov having won it only four times and Bobby Fischer three.

Anand, who learnt the game from his mother Susila Viswanathan, learnt the nuances while following the game on chess in Manila, the Philippines, where his father R.Viswanathan, a senior railway officer, was posted for some years in the early 1980s.

Anand’s early success in the sport came in 1983, when at the age of 14, he stunned the field with a nine out of nine perfect score winning the National Sub-Junior Chess Championship.

A year later he became the youngest Indian to win the International Master’s Title at the age of 15 in 1984.

By 16, he was the National Champion and he won it twice more.

Playing his moves at great speed, he earned the nickname of “Lightning Kid” and also “Tiger from Madras” and in 1987, he returned to Manila, to become the first Indian to win the World Junior Chess Championship.

In 1988, at 18, he earned three Grandmaster norms in a span of less than 12 months and in December, he became India’s first Grandmaster.

His first big moment came at the Reggio Emilia tournament in 1991 where he finished ahead of Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, signalling his arrival at the world stage.

In 1991, Anand lost in a tie-breaker to Anatoly Karpov in the quarter finals of the FIDE Knockout World Chess Championship.

As the world of chess split, Anand also played in the Kasparov promoted Professional Chess Association and reached the final, where he lost to Kasparov in New York City’s World Trade Center. After eight draws, Anand broke through with a win in ninth game.

But then the more experienced Kasparov hit back and won four of the next five games and went on to win the match 10.5-7.5.

In 2000, with Kasparov and Kramnik staying Anand’s win at the FIDE World Championships in New Delhi and Teheran did not impress the chess fraternity, which still considered the classical Matchplay as the real world title.

But on the tournament circuit, Anand continued his domination in various forms, winning Advanced Chess tournaments in Leon, Spain, and the Chess Classic of Mainz, where he won the title 11 times.

His five successes at Wijk Aan Zee have been a record and he has also won in Dortmund and Linares, the latter three times.

In 2007 he won the Linares-Morelia with the world’s top players in attendance, though Kasparov had retired by then. The tournament was played to crown the undisputed world champion and Anand was finally one.

Then with critics still claiming Anand had not won a title in Matchplay, he came up against Kramnik, who had dethroned Kasparov.

Anand decimated Kramnik and went three-up in first six games, before Kramnik began his fight. The Russian challenger won the tenth game, but that only narrowed the deficit to two points before the Indian drew the 11th game and won 6.5-4.5 to retain his world title.

Anand is the only player to have won the world title in three formats – the 128-player FIDE Championship in 2000, the closed tournament format in Linares-Morelia in 2007 and now the Matchplay against Kramnik.

In October 2003, FIDE, organised a rapid time control tournament in Cap d’Agde and called it as the World Rapid Chess Championship. Each player had 25 minutes at the start of the game, with an additional 10 seconds after each move. Anand won this event ahead of ten of the other top twelve players in the world with Kasparov being the only missing player.

Apart from six Oscars, his other awards include the Arjuna award for Outstanding Indian Sportsman in Chess in 1985; the Padma Shri, National Citizens Award and Soviet Land Nehru Award in 1987; the inaugural Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honour in the year 1991-1992. His book, “My Best Games of Chess” also won the British Chess Federation ‘Book of the Year’ Award in 1998.

Amanda puts career before love!

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:56 AM PDT

Hollywood actress Amanda Seyfried says she puts her career before love.

“My character was very motivated by her job and not by her love life, which is kind of normal for a girl her age. I know it is for me. Sometimes I focus less on my relationship and more on my career,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.

“I think it’s common to meet somebody and fall in love right away, but the rest isn’t easy. When you’re in love, sometimes you just can’t see it realistically. The world inside a relationship can be very warped because of feelings and memories, and it all becomes jumbled,” she said.

Amanda admitted her own relationship with Dominic Cooper had been quite a challenge at times.

“It’s never easy to be separated from someone you love. When your love lives in another country, it’s a lot of miles on airplanes, a lot of distance in space and in time. I always find it hard, even after you’re separated even for just a few days,” she added.

Pranab attacks Trinamool for failure of seat-sharing talks

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:46 AM PDT

Attacking Trinamool Congress for the collapse of the seat adjustment talks with the Congress for the coming civic polls in West Bengal, Finance Minister and state Congress chief Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said nobody should expect his party to wind up in the state for the sake of an alliance.

In a broadside against Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee, whom he did not name, Mukherjee said: “If somebody ignores us, we have nothing to say about it. But even the Britsh could not finish the Congress. Thousands of our party workers embraced martyrdom in fighting the British. Nobody should forget the Congress’ rich history”.

Addressing a public meeting in the northern part of the city in support of Congress candidates for the May 30 Kolkata Municipal Corporation elections, Mukherjee took a pot shot at Banerjee saying: “We want to win as many seat as we can. But if we lose, we are not going to scream that the polls have been rigged. We will accept the verdict of the people in all humility”.

Banerjee has time and again in the past attributed her party’s electoral defeats to “rigging” by the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).

Mukherjee said his party had sacrificed a lot last year for the sake of an alliance with the Trinmool against the ruling CPI-M-led Left Front.

“We surrendered most of the seats to our alliance partner in the Lok Sabha elections because we knew people wanted an alliance against the LF. So despite deep resentment in our party, I ensured that Trinamool got to contest two-thirds of the seats. What did we gain from the alliance? Nothing. But we told our workers that we need to make sacrifices for the sake of the alliance”.

Earlier, Mukherjee ruled out any effect at the centre or next year’s state assembly polls of the collapse of the poll alliance with the Trinamool Congress for the civic elections.

“It would not be correct to equate the municipal polls with the Lok Sabha or assembly elections. In municipal polls, the issue is civic amenities, not politics. But Lok Sabha and assembly polls are much bigger stages,” he told reporters here.

Mukherjee said his party had tried to enter into a seat adjustment with the Trinamool for the May 30 municipal polls, but it failed.

“It’s unfortunate. But we don’t want to blame anyone. We want to win the maximum number of seats. There is no need to make any advance prediction of the post-poll situation,” he said.

Noting he had only taken part in the initial discussions with Banerjee for the municipal polls tie-up, Mukherjee, however, took responsibility for the way the seat adjustment parleys proceeded finally resulting in the two parties going their own way. “Though I was not present in the talks, whatever has happened is my responsibility. Those who took part in the discussions consulted me regularly.”

The two parties have failed to forge alliances in none of the 82 civic bodies including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) which are slated to go to polls.

Miners in blast-hit Chhattisgarh coal mine untraced

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:42 AM PDT

Rescuers at a blast-hit underground coal mine in Chhattisgarh have failed to make contact with two missing miners despite their best efforts for the past one week, officials said Tuesday.

An air blast hit the Anjali Hill mine in Koriya district, over 400 km north of capital Raipur, May 6 when workers were trying to fix a carbon monoxide leak. The mine caved in and killed four people. The toll has since risen to nine.

The mine is owned by the South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), the largest profit-making subsidiary of the public sector Coal India Ltd.

“The rescuers are doing the best to reach out to the two trapped miners. Hopes of their survival are now almost zero,” SECL spokesperson Alok Sinha told IANS by phone from Bilaspur where the firm’s headquarters is based.

He said the accident had halted production of the blast-hit mine that had a daily output of 800-900 tonnes of superior grade coal.

Sinha said: “I can’t say when production will restart. Our focus now is on rescue work.”

The state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), meanwhile, formed a panel of three Lok Sabha MPs – Saroj Pandey (Durg), Murarilal Singh (Surguja) and Vishnu Deo Sai (Raigarh) – who will visit the blast-hit mine Wednesday. They will submit a report to the party about the cause of the accident.

The panel will also talk to family members of the victims to ensure adequate monetary compensation and other assistance.

Separate dialysis centre coming up in Delhi, court told

With Gandhi as guide, Gates goes to a Dalit village

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:39 AM PDT

After showing Bill Gates a glimpse of the development he had initiated in the social and the health sectors in the Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies represented by him and his mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi took the Microsoft chief to experience life in a Dalit village in Pratapgarh district Tuesday evening.

It was here that Gates opened up to a closer interaction with the locals – men, women and children – making inquiries about their personal lives, their livelihood, education and the general quality of life in this village.

Dodging the media, Rahul and Gates drove off to this village, some 25 km away from the Munshiganj guest house where they were spending the night.

They chose to halt at the Dalit dominated Chamrahi locality of the village where they squatted on a charpoy and entered into a free-wheeling interaction with the villagers, for whom it seemed like a treat with Rahul acting as interpreter between them and Gates.

“We have never had the opportunity to see and talk to Rahul Gandhi one-to-one manner. It was great,” said 55-year-old Siya Ram, a local farmer.

Adding to their delight was Gates’ introduction as the “world’s wealthiest man”, who gave a new dimension to computers.

Excited with the brief interaction that she had with Gates, 14-year-old Asha told this scribe: “I could have never imagined myself face to face with such a personality.”

What had clearly impressed her most was the concern that Gates showed on learning that she had dropped out of school in class VIII as her family did not have enough money to support her studies.

Forty-year-old Rama Devi felt proud giving an account of how as a part of a women self-help group she had succeeded in motivating a number of women in her neighbourhood to create a decent kitty out of small savings.

“The Gora sahib (referring to Gates) listened to me with rapt attention as Rahul bhaiyya went about explaining things to him after asking me different questions,” she said.

AS word spread about the arrival of Rahul Gandhi with a foreigner VVIP, men, women and children made a beeline for the corner where Rahul and Gates were chatting away with the locals.

After spending about 45 minutes in Chamrahi, the two returned to the guest house and then again ventured out to yet another village to interact with more people.

Carey Mulligan donates BAFTA dress for charity

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:26 AM PDT

Hollywood actress Carey Mulligan has donated to Oxfam charity her black and white gown, which she wore during BAFTA.

The dress, made for “An Education” star by French label Vionnet, was lauded by fashionistas during the award function.

It is to be displayed at a charity shop which will open for a week in the basement of London department store Selfridges, staffed by high-profile figures led by singer Annie Lennox. The bids will start at just 50 pounds, although fashion industry insiders suggest the dress could go for a far larger sum.

“I’m honoured to be able to donate my BAFTA dress to support Oxfam’s work helping women living in extreme poverty across the world,” telegraph.co.uk quoted Mulligan as saying.

James Servini, head of personal shopping at Selfridges, said: “Carey’s dress is a complete one-off that is never going to age. The dress has become so iconic in such a short time that it can only gain in value over the years.

“If Carey continues to prove her mettle as a leading actress and a modern fashion front-runner, that dress could easily smash the 10,000 barrier once it officially turns vintage in 10 years time.”

The event begins May 14 and continues until May 20. The funds raised from the sale will go to Oxfam’s women’s projects across the world, including Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Democratic Republic of Congo, West Africa and South Africa.

US drone attacks kill 24 in Pakistan (Second Lead)

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:25 AM PDT

At least 24 militants were killed Tuesday in two US drone attacks that targeted suspected hideouts of Islamist insurgents in Pakistan`s tribal region near the Afghan border, security officials said.

The first strike hit the Datta Khel area of the North Waziristan tribal district, a stronghold of Taliban and Al Qaeda militants.

“The drones fired 18 missiles at a house and vehicle parked there,” an intelligence official said. “Fourteen people died while six were injured.”

A second intelligence official confirmed the attack, saying most of those killed were members of a Pakistani Taliban group headed by warlord Hafiz Gul Bahadur.

Hours later, a second drone strike hit a compound and a car at Gurweek, 46 km southwest of Miran Shah, the main town in North Waziristan.

“Ten militants were killed in the attack that destroyed a mud compound,” an intelligence official said on the condition of not being named.

A senior military official also confirmed that the strike was a drone attack, but he refused to verify the death toll.

North Waziristan, one of the seven districts in Pakistan’s lawless tribal region, is used as a base by many Al Qaeda and Taliban militants, who run training camps and conduct crossborder raids on NATO troops in Afghanistan.

Unlike other tribal districts, North Waziristan has escaped Pakistan’s recent assault on Islamist insurgents, mainly because the militants there have a peace deal with the government under which they avoid attacking official targets.

But the pressure is mounting on Pakistan for an all-out offensive in the district since Faisal Shahzad, a US citizen of Pakistani origin, admitted he received training in the region for last week’s attempted bombing in New York.

The US Central Intelligence Agency is conducting a drone bombing campaign against the militants and their hideouts in the region. More than 900 people, most of them militants but also many civilians, have died in more than 100 airstrikes since August 2008.

Pakistan officially criticizes the drone attacks as a violation of national sovereignty that fuels public resentment. But many analysts said the country’s intelligence agencies secretly cooperate in the attacks by giving information about possible targets.

Anand wins final game to retain world chess title (Lead)

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:25 AM PDT

Viswanathan Anand held his nerve and focus way better than his opponent Veselin Topalov here Tuesday to win the 12th and final game to retain his World Chess Championships title.

The 40-year-old Indian beat local man from Bulgaria in the closing game with black pieces to emerge a 6.5-5.5 winner and seal his place as one of the dominant players of his era.

Anand first won the world title in 2000 and held it till 2002 when the chess world was still split. He became the undisputed World champion in 2007 and then retained the title in 2008 when he beat Vladimir Kramnik. This time around he beat Topalov to cement his place among one of the games’ all-time greats.

Anand, who travelled more than 40 hours by road to reach the venue as flights in Europe were suspended due to the volcanic ash from Iceland, lost the first game. He, however, quickly hit back with wins in the second and third game.

Anand held his lead past the midway stage of the match, before Topalov caught up with Anand in eighth game to equalize the match scores. In game nine Anand had his chances but failed to find the crucial win. Then again in game 11, both players had a nail-biting clash before sending the match into the 12th and final game.

The game began with Topalov having the advantage of white pieces, but Anand, who is considered one of the most aggressive players in world chess, held his own and found the winning route with black pieces as his opponent blundered in crucial stages.

The game started with a Queen’s Gambit Declined Lasker Variation, a solid but not very commonly used at this level. This variation saw a lot of exchanges but with Topalov going for a win, the game became very sharp. However with 32…fxe4 Topalov blundered horribly and from there on he was a slide.

There was a time when Anand seemed to have let the Bulgarian back in the game, but in the endgame Anand once again held supreme.

The line used by Anand with black was not the most popular one, but clearly the Indian wanted to have it as a surprise weapon and also because it is reasonably safe opening for black and difficult for white to force a win. A draw would send the match into the rapid games, where Anand would have the edge.

Anand’s place was to have a symmetrical pawn structure while white had space advantage. Topalov was able to avoid the symmetrical pawn structure, but Anand continued to find a defence for his ‘under attack’ c5 pawn.

By this time it was clear that Anand was prepared to play a practical and safe line and avoid taking any chances and get Topalov to play the sharp lines and try for a win, though they were slim, if not negligible at all times.

Into the mid game, Anand continued to hold his c5 pawn and yet put pressure on the Kingside of Topalov.

It was around the 30th move that Anand sneaked ahead in a manner of speaking. He developed a strong attack and from there on he kept his focus and nerves.

By move 35, Anand knew he had a great chance of a win. And then Topalov made some bad moves to give Anand a decisive edge.

Anand did sense a winning route but it was not all that easy and then Topalov made the biggest blunder on move 38 with his Qf1 which opened the h1 – a8 diagonal. Anand found the right move 38…Rxg4+ and from there on Topalov’s only hope was a bigger blunder from Anand.

Anand for a brief moment seemed to have given Topalov a lease of life, but it was only a mirage of sorts. Anand still had a chance to win and Topalov clung on a straw and then finally gave in on move 57 as he had no chance of saving the game and Anand had plenty of time to wrap the issue.

Arrested Dahod police chief’s remand extended

Posted: 11 May 2010 10:24 AM PDT

A Gujarat court Tuesday extended by seven more days the police remand of Dahod Superintendent of Police Vipul Agrawal, arrested in connection with the Tulsi Prajapati “gunfight” case.

Agrawal was arrested by the state CID (crime) earlier this month and was remanded in police custody for seven days. He was the then Banaskantha police chief when Prajapati, the sole witness in the staged killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh, was killed by the police.

On the expiry of his remand, Agrawal was again brought before a Danta court Tuesday and while the police wanted 10 more days remand, the additional sessions judge, Danta, S.S.Joshi, granted seven days.

The police plea was that he needed to be questioned on the Prajapati gunfight for more details. Along with him, two police constables then posted in Banaskantha, were also granted seven more days of police remand.

Prajapati was killed in December 2006, about a year after Sohrabuddin’s killing.

The then police sub-inspector, Ashish Pandya, who was believed to have shot Prajapati dead, is still absconding, while four policemen of Rajasthan, who were in the know of the things, are also believed to be “missing”.

Meanwhile, the CBI, investigating the Sohrabuddin case, has written to all district collectors to check from the list of the armed license holders in their respective districts if the owner of the 0.32 bore revolver recovered from Sohrabuddin after his encounter, could be traced. The district collectors have been told to intimate the CBI immediately if any information was available about the revolver.

The first batch of machines is expected to roll out in the next 20 months.
