Sri Lankan Players’ Participation In IPL 2014 Clouded?

Posted: 07 Jan 2014 06:06 AM PST

The cricket fever is going to be high again as IPL 2014 is soon to begin. With auctions for players of IPL 7 to be held in February 2014, this time inclusion of Sri Lankan players is doubtful in the tournament. Sri Lanka has announced a 2 ODI matches series with Ireland in May. Also the team is scheduled to be playing with England which can hinder the inclusion of Sri Lankan Players in IPL 2014 teams. According to stats, the last visit of Sri Lanka to Ireland was in 1979 for a 1st class match which was a draw.

At present, the matches against Ireland are time tabled for May 6th and 8th; however these are only tentative dates and might be changed. Auctions of IPL players will begin from 13th February and if Sri Lankan Cricket board puts the restriction of national duty first on players then it will be difficult for them to participate. Otherwise Lankan tigers will be free to play for IPL in this season.murlidharan_in_IPl

Showing his reaction on the coming series Phil Simmons, coach of Ireland told Cricinfo, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our squad to face players of the caliber of Kumar Sangakkara, Angelo Matthews, and Tillakaratne Dilshan and of course Lasith Malinga.”

According to Simmons this will provide an opportunity for Irish players to learn from the experienced. He added, “They’re going to be tough opposition but Irish conditions in May will be to our advantage.” Further sharing his views he said, “Ireland need as many matches as possible against Full Member sides: it’s how we measure ourselves now in terms of our cricketing progress. We’ll be gearing our preparation towards the 2015 World Cup, and this series is ideal.”

“Last year couldn’t have gone much better in terms of the fact that we won three trophies and continued our domination against our fellow Associates. We did, however, miss opportunities to claim victories against both Pakistan and England when in strong positions.

“We’ll be looking to take our cricket to the next level in 2014 by winning from these types of situations, pressing home our advantage when we’re on top.”

Not such good news especially for the fans and teams who owe much of their success to players like Sangakkara and Angelo Matthews.

Absence of Sri Lankan players in the IPL 2014 is going to create vacant positions and who all will fill them is definitely be an interesting affair.
