Hollywood Movie: Chronicles of Narnia 3 (3D)' Review Posted: 04 Dec 2010 03:43 AM PST Film: "Chronicles of Narnia 3 (3D)"; Director: Michael Apted; Actors: Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes, Will Poulter; Rating: **1/2 The chronicles of Narnia series, with the message of fighting evil, goes darker in this instalment of the film, with the evil this time lurking inside. Sadly, despite commendable special effects, the film does not have the charm or wit of the first part. Lucy (Georgie Henley) and Edmund (Skandar Keynes) are living with their cousin Eustace (Will Poulter) who does not believe in their tales of Narnia. However, all three kids are sucked into the world of Narnia, where they join Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) in search of seven lords that have disappeared after going to an island. Their search leads them to the edge of the world, to a strange evil that threatens not only their mission, but the peace and quiet of entire Narnia. The previous films were simple tales of good vs. evil and of choosing the good no matter how defeating it seems. There was a visible evil in both films. In the third instalment, the evil is not outside, it is inside and each character must face the evil inside - their fears and insecurities. That is the greatest evil. The film thus obviously misses a face to this evil. Green mist is not a character that can scare audiences. Though it is bold, for a children's film, to tell children that the greatest evil is inside you, this grand evil is not translated well on screen despite commendable special effects and introduction of some quirky characters and settings. "Chronicles of Narnia" has always been a book to imbibe lessons of Christian goodness in children. And this part is an extension with most of the seven deadly sins and its evils subtly demonstrated. The metaphor is thus beautiful, but not its translation on screen. The film also misses out on the presence of the two elder siblings, who have now grown up and hence cannot be a part of Narnia. The introduction of Eustace to take the place of a meek and fearful Edmund from the first part of the film, does add some fun, but is not enough to raise the stakes of the film. Yet, if one looks at it, there isn't much more that could have been done with the story. Perhaps, the fault does not necessarily lie with the makers of the film, but with C.S. Lewis, who wrote a story that is good to read, but is perhaps untranslatable to screen. Or maybe the series misses the direction of Andrew Adamson, who passed the baton to Michael Apted.

Rani Mukherjee says, 'No One Killed Jessica' should get 'A' Posted: 04 Dec 2010 02:23 AM PST Usually actors wish for a U/A certificate for their films so that many people can go and see the film, but Rani Mukerji is different. The actress wants an 'Adult' certificate for her forthcoming film "No One Killed Jessica". "I'll be more than happy with an 'A' certificate for the film. In fact, I want that because we don't want children to come and see this film. I think it won't be okay for children to come and see this film so it will be okay if they give it an 'A' certificate," Rani told reporters here. "Even I wouldn't get my niece for the film because I think it's not meant for her," she added. "No One Killed Jessica" is based on model Jessica Lall who was shot dead in 1999 by Manu Sharma in a nightclub. Produced by UTV Spotboy, the film also features Vidya Balan as Jessica's elder sister Sabrina. It will hit the screens Jan 7 next year. In the film, Rani will be seen in a completely different and bold avatar. "My role is that of a TV news reporter called Meera Gaiety. She is a fearless journalist, in a way heroic like most female journalists. It was a great experience working on this film because I had the chance of asking the questions and not answering them," said Rani. "The character is inspired by many women journalists. It's a mixture of all, not on one particular woman journalist. My director wanted me to build this character as my own," she added.

Hindi Movie 'Rakht Charitra 2' Film Review Posted: 04 Dec 2010 02:12 AM PST Film: "Rakht Charitra2"; Starring: Suriya, Vivek Oberoi, Priyamani, Radhika Apte; Directed: Ram Gopal Varma; Rating: *** ½ In this sequel to Ram Gopal Varma's month-old film about gangwars during the time of politics and elections we get to see for the first time in a Hindi film Suriya, an actor of searing intensity and devastating emotional velocity. Suriya takes the frontseat in the sequel to create an ambience of implosive violence. Yes, we've never seen an actor so controlled in his intensity for a long time. Suriya's vendetta spree certainly lends an added sheen to the proceedings.
Whether expressing his love for his wife (Priya Mani, over-madeup) and baby or hatred for his opponent Paritala Ravi (Vivek Oberoi, not able to add to his performance from the first part), Suriya's eyes convey a smouldering universe of indignation injustice grief and anger.
Cleverly Varma has given Suriya long stretches of silence in which the star-actor negotiates his angst-filled journey from betrayal to redemption. Suriya's lengthy introduction sequence, the even lengthier attempt to kill him in the court house and the long fight sequence in jail are all 'items' constructed to spotlight the star's agile histrionics.
"Rakhta Charitra2" goes a little slower on the body count than the first part. It is still one of the bloodiest, most violent films in living memory.
This must be the quickest sequel ever. "Rakht Charitra2" is better, more engaging and riveting in terms of content and drama. Full credit to Ram Gopal Varma for re-creating the savage world of politics and bloodshed in the Andhra hinterland. With skilled hands, Varma weaves the theme of an internecine war between two Men Who Would Be King In The Concrete Jungle.
The background score and editing highlight the ruthless profile of the hinterland. "Rakht Charitra 2" goes beyond the first part in pursuit of the savage impulses that accentuate the hunger for power. Suriya has the most pained eyes since Om Puri in "Aakrosh". Between the pleading and the bleeding that are projected into his character, Suriya proves himself the discovery of the year.
Watch "Rakht Charitra2" for Suriya. And then watch it for the parable of violence that Ram Gopal Varma continues to construct in search of a meaning for the cinema beyond surface beauty.
