Dear friend,
Two weekends ago nearly a quarter-million people rallied in Washington in support of immigration reform - it was an incredible, inspiring moment for the movement to enact fair and moral reform. As we have learned from past efforts, we must not only march in the streets, but also raise our voices and concerns with our political leaders. One tactic without the other loses impact. The rally garnered national media attention and raised the issue of immigration reform as a serious contender for legislative action this year. But it will take all of us to convince Congress to take immigration reform seriously and introduce a bill. Advocating for immigration reform - including an earned pathway to legalization and citizenship – is one tangible way we can live out our calling as Christians to love our neighbors. As we’ve seen with health-care reform, there is a large role for the faith community to play in this public policy debate. Though the present political environment might seem daunting, we must be faithful in working for a more just system! Flawed “enforcement-only” practices continue to divide families, deport workers, underpay laborers, defer students’ dreams, and offer no agency to those still living in the shadows. Millions of immigrants in the United States can't "get in line" to gain legal status. By signing the pledge, you’ll help make the case to Congress that Christians want to see compassionate reform of our immigration laws as soon as possible. Sincerely, Allison, Justin, Matt, Elizabeth, and the rest of the immigration team at Sojourners. P.S. After you sign the petition, check out the picture of our banner and a video from the rally - the images are incredible. |
