Miley to quit Pop over Politics in music Industry Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:34 AM PDT London, April 9 (IANS) Teen sensation Miley Cysrus has defended her decision to quit pop for movies, insisting she has grown disillusioned with the “contrived” music industry. Since shooting to fame as schoolgirl pop star Hannah Montana on the hit Disney show with the same name, Cyrus has released three studio albums to date, and has announced that her fourth that comes out later this year will be her last. The 17-year-old has moved on to serious acting with her first grown-up role in “The Last Song”, and has confirmed that she wants to concentrate on her movie career because she felt forced to step away from making music, as she grew tired of record label bureaucracy, reports contactmusic.com. “I just feel like the industry is so contrived and political right now. If people stepped away and said, ‘We’re not going to work like this, it’s more about out art than the politics’, then maybe it would go back to being respected again,” she said. “I’d rather be in an industry that I feel like I can be different in, and do things that really inspire me. It’s not that I don’t love music, I do. But I feel like I just need to get away from that for a little while,” she added. |
Kate Winslet Finds Plastic Surgery Terrifying Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:29 AM PDT Los Angeles, April 9 (IANS) Hollywood actress Kate Winslet admitted that she cannot understand why people are so eager to change their looks, and finds plastic surgery terrifying. “I think plastic surgery is terrifying. It’s out of control. It makes me really sad, especially when you see younger women altering their faces.” The actress feels that beauty magazines are responsible for foisting an unrealistic image of women onto young girls, reports imdb.com. |
Blood pressure drugs could help repair damaged kidneys Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:23 AM PDT London, April 9 (IANS) A study has found that blood pressure drugs could be used to repair damaged kidneys. The study was conducted by the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Bergamo, Italy. The trial on 112 patients showed that the half who were given an ACE inhibitor were less likely to go on to kidney failure than those who received standard treatment, reports telegraph.co.uk. If the trials are successful, researchers believe that the treatment could cut the numbers who need a kidney transplant every year or who are on constant dialysis. While writing in journal Lancet, the researchers also suggested that stem cells could some day be used to allow damaged kidneys to repair themselves. |

Case against four AMU officials for breach of privacy Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:52 AM PDT Aligarh, April 9 (IANS) A court here Friday ordered a case to be registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against four Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) officials and two journalists for breaching the privacy of a gay varsity teacher S.R. Siras, officials said. Siras, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances Wednesday, had moved the chief judicial magistrate’s (CJM) court accusing some AMU officials and journalists of intruding his privacy by carrying a sting operation on him. Siras was filmed engaging in homosexual act with a rickshaw puller. On the basis of the film, he was later suspended Feb 9 by the administration on the grounds of “gross misconduct”. Siras moved the Allahabad High Court against his suspension and the CJM’s court in connection with the breach of his privacy. The high court April 1 stayed his suspension as well as the varsity’s order asking him to vacate his official accomodation. Siras was associated with the AMU since 1988 as a lecturer of Marathi and was promoted as reader in 2003 under Career Advancement Scheme. |
Coppola’s granddaughter joins family business! Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:42 AM PDT London, April 9 (IANS) Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s granddaughter Gia has become the latest member of the family to follow in the director’s footsteps, as she has shot her first short film. The 23-year-old, whose father is Coppola’s eldest son Gian-Carlo, has taken her first steps into the movie business by making a promo for fashion designer Zac Posen, reports dailystar.co.uk. Her directorial debut will promote Posen’s collection for US store Target, and the designer is convinced Gia is the next big talent to emerge from the Coppola family. “She’s going to be the next Coppola force to be reckoned with. They just genetically, aesthetically, have something – they’re able to capture magic,” said Posen. Coppola’s daughter Sofia, Gia’s aunt, has forged her own successful directing career, winning her first Oscar for 2003s “Lost in Translation”. |
Gisele Bundchen could never be a designer Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:41 AM PDT London, April 9 (IANS) Supermodel Gisele Bundchen has revealed she could never be a fashion designer as she doesn’t have the skill or the patience to create clothes and accessories full-time. The Brazilian beauty, however, did enjoy working on her flip-flop collection, Ipamema, with Brazil’s largest shoe company Grendene, reports contactmusic.com. “I am very inspired by nature and like to use that for my ideas, but actually designing them – no way. I would be a disaster,” she said. Bundchen says she is more focused on her creations being environmentally-friendly rather than how much she helped design them. “Nature is very close to my heart, and it is important for me that people who buy my flip-flops are made aware of the environment,” she said. |
Islamic insurgents ban BBC, VOA broadcasts in Mogadishu Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:39 AM PDT Mogadishu, April 9 (IANS) Somali insurgents Friday banned the rebroadcast of programmes by BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) and VOA (Voice of America) on the FM radio stations in Mogadishu, Xinhua reported. The militants also seized the equipments of an FM station that relays BBC programmes 24×7 in Mogadishu. “From today (Friday) onwards all FM (stations) that rebroadcast BBC inside the Islamic Wilayats (regions) shall stop broadcasting and all their equipment will be confiscated,” said a statement issued by Al Shabaab, an Islamist group that controls much of south and central Somali regions. Soon after the statement was issued, fighters from the Islamist rebel movement stormed into an FM station that broadcasts BBC programmes in Mogadishu. The group accused the BBC of implementing what it termed as the agenda of the coloniser (a term the rebels use to refer to non-Muslims particularly Christians). Al Shabaab also banned the VOA from rebroadcasting the programmes from its Somali language section in Mogadishu. Both BBC and VOA use FM stations in Mogadishu and other regions to broadcast their programmes. |
Subhas Bose’s statue unveiled at Presidency College Posted: 09 Apr 2010 10:37 AM PDT Kolkata, April 9 (IANS) A statue of Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was Friday unveiled at Presidency College, 94 years after he was expelled from the institute for manhandling British teacher E.F. Oaten. Academicians, students, and alumni of Presidency College were present in strength to celebrate the occasion as former principal Amal Kumar Mukhopadhyay unveiled the statue on the college campus on central Kolkata’s College Street. Bose, then a 19-year-old third year student of philosophy, was expelled from the college on Feb 16, 1916, along with another student A. M. Dam for the assault on Oaten, which was a protest against some comments by the teacher. “When Bose was informed by the principal about the expulsion, he only replied ‘Thank You’ and left the college,” said the college’s political science department head Nandalal Chakraborty. Mukhopadhyay, as principal, had withdrawn Bose’s suspension in 1996, and also hung a portrait of the freedom fighter in his office. |
