Britain’s coalition talks to continue into Monday

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:58 AM PDT

London, May 9 (DPA) Britain’s Conservative and Liberal parties ended a day of consultations over the possible formation of a new government Sunday with a pledge that economic stability and a reduction of the massive state deficit would be at the heart of any future agreement.

Negotiating teams of the two sides would meet again in the next 24 hours, William Hague, the Tories’ foreign policy spokesman, said. The talks had been ‘positive and productive’ and covered political reform, banking reform and measures to cut the budget deficit.

Earlier, party sources said the two sides were keen to give a signal of reassurance to financial markets already unsettled by the Greek debt crisis.

The Conservatives, who emerged as the biggest party from Thursday’s general election, have claimed the ‘moral right’ to lead negotiations with the Liberals, Britain’s third political party.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whose Labour Party suffered heavy losses, remains in his post, in accordance with constitutional rules.

Coin release heralds Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:58 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) A commemorative coin to mark the beginning of the yearlong 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was released by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee here Sunday.

The coin was released at a glittering cultural gala at the packed Meghdoot theatre at the Rabindra Sadan here.

This is the second commemorative coin to be released by the Indian government as a tribute to the poet on his birth anniversary. ‘We released the first coin during the birth centenary celebrations,’ Mukherjee said.

The first commemorative coin was issued in 1961.

‘The coin is significant because it perpetuates the legacy of Tagore, who is a global icon,’ Mukherjee said.

Paying homage to the poet, the finance minister outlined his role in the ‘evolution of modern India and his contribution to its growth and the spirit of nationalism’.

Tagore was a pioneer, having spearheaded several social reforms that were ahead of their times, the minister said.

The minister said talks were on with the Bangladesh government to ‘carry forward the cultural pact’ that India had inked with the country in January ‘which centres on the shared legacy of Tagore between both the nations’.

Mashiur Rahman, a top aide of the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ‘had recently called on me and I discussed the cultural engagement,’ Mukherjee said.

‘Tagore spent considerable time in Bangladesh. His family owned considerable land in Shelidah in Bangladesh and Tagore managed it for a long time. His tenure in Bangladesh was marked by fecund literary activity,’ Mukherjee said.

In January this year, India had agreed to increase the annual scholarships to Bangladeshi students to 300 and had proposed a joint celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Tagore in 2011.

A special culture programme, Rabindra Pranati, featuring Tagore’s songs set to regional dance choreography, marked the occasion.

‘Honour killing’ victims make dramatic reappearance

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:56 AM PDT

Lucknow, May 9 (IANS) A couple in Uttar Pradesh declared dead by police in an ‘honour killing’ Sunday made a dramatic reappearance, even as an incensed father threw his daughter from the roof of his house after her ’secret’ marriage, while another girl was killed for insisting on marrying according to her choice.

Ajit Saini and Anju Tomar of Muzaffarnagar district, who were declared dead by police after disappearing for the past few days, followed by the identification of a highly mutilated body as that of Saini, showed up before the police in the district.

Anju’s brother, Anuj was arrested Saturday and admitted to murdering Ajit.

‘I hacked him for the sake of honour… I wanted to save the prestige of my family and, therefore, killed him,’ Anuj told reporters. Police suspected that Anuj had killed his sister as well.

Saini and Anju had eloped, and on reading news reports about their ‘murder’, promptly called one of their relatives who, in turn, informed the Muzaffarnagar police.

Additional Director General of Police Brij Lal however maintained that the police were not at all at fault. ‘The police most naturally believed the confession by Anju’s brother. And what further confirmed the theory was the identification of the body by Ajit’s own family members,’ he said.

Police have now launched a fresh investigation to ascertain the true identity of the mutilated body.

‘The fact remains that Anju’s brother actually killed someone, so we have directed our men to carry our a fresh probe into the whole affair,’ Brij Lal said.

‘Members of both families have been detained for questioning,’ he added.

In another case, a 21-year-old MBA student was ‘critically’ injured in Meerut after falling victim to the wrath of her father, a police sub-inspector posted at Ghaziabad.

‘Parul, a first year MBA student, married her classmate Dileep Kumar at a temple during the course of a college trip to Vaishno Devi temple earlier this month. However, no sooner the girl broke the news about her marriage to her parents, the father started beating her up and eventually flung her off the terrace,’ police circle officer Tribhuvan Bisen told IANS over telephone from Meerut, 400 km from here.

Parul’s father, Suresh Pal Singh was not ready to accept her marriage to a boy of her choice.

The helpless girl was rushed to the hospital by her neighbours, who gave an eyewitness account of the brutality committed by her father Saturday at their family home.

In the third instance, a girl was allegedly hacked to death by her father and brother in Kaushambi district, about 260 km from here, Saturday.

According to police, 19-year-old Soni, a resident of Khalilabad village in the district, was hacked to death by her father Bachu Lal Kori, for insisting on marrying a boy of the same village.

‘Kori, accompanied by his brother and son, thrashed Soni to death and then chopped her body into pieces before abandoning it in the fields outside a temple,’ a police spokesman told IANS. The father was not ready to approve a love marriage even though both the girl and boy belonged to the same caste.

Arrested Karnataka ex-minister admitted to hospital

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:54 AM PDT

Bangalore, May 9 (IANS) Former Karnataka minister Haratalu Halappa, arrested Sunday in a rape case, has been admitted to a government hospital in Shimoga after he complained of chest pain, police said.

‘Halappa has been admitted to a government hospital after the magistrate ordered the jail authorities to provide necessary medical assistance to the accused, who complained of chest pain while in the custody of the state Crime Investigation Department (CID),’ Shimoga Superintendent of Police S. Murugan told IANS.

Halappa was formally arrested after he surrendered to the CID and was presented before the local magistrate Sunday night. His anticipatory bail application has been posted for hearing at the sessions court Monday.

Halappa, 49, resigned May 2 as food and civil supplies minister after he was accused of raping Chandravathi, the wife of his friend Venkatesh Murthy, at Shimoga on the night of Nov 26-27, 2009.

The CID served a notice on Halappa May 6 to appear before its inquiry team by May 10 for interrogation.

The Shimoga police had registered the criminal case against him May 4 on a complaint by the victim a day earlier.

‘Halappa reported at the office of the district superintendent of police at 2.30 p.m. for deposition in response to our notice served at his residence in his absence. He was taken into custody and interrogated on the basis of the victim’s complaint,’ a CID official told IANS from Shimoga earlier.

Halappa was quizzed on the various charges levelled against him, including rape, wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation.

Shimoga is some 270 km from here.

Israeli-Palestinian indirect talks ‘wide-ranging’

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:54 AM PDT

Washington, May 9 (DPA) The US government Sunday said that the first round of indirect peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians had been ’serious and wide-ranging’.

Both sides had taken ’steps to create an atmosphere that is conducive to successful talks’, state department spokesman Philip Crowley said in a statement.

Special envoy George Mitchell had left for the Middle East and was due to return next week.

The US had ‘received commitments from both sides, and we have made assurances to both sides, that are enabling us to move forward’, Crowley added.

However he emphasised that if either side took ’significant actions during the proximity talks that we judge would seriously undermine trust,’ the US would ‘hold them accountable’.

India fail to handle short-balls, lose to West Indies

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:52 AM PDT

Bridgetown (Barbados), May 9 (IANS) Skipper Chris Gayle struck a whirlwind 66-ball 98 as hosts West Indies bounced India out of the World Twenty20 with a 14-run win in a Group F match of the Super Eight here Sunday.

Gayle came agonisingly close to becoming the first to make two international Twenty20 centuries. But his superb knock took the West Indies to a challenging 169 for six in 20 overs after being put to bat by India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on a dampish pitch at the Kensington Oval.

The Indians were pathetic in their chase and the in-form Suresh Raina top scored with 32 before the innings folded for 155 for nine in 20 overs. They were again out done by the short-deliveries, in a repeat of the last year’s World Twenty20 against the same opponents.

With the loss, India slipped to the fourth place in the group and with still a match against Sri Lanka, their chances of making the semi-final is virtually over.

West Indies bowlers used the short-balls cleverly, exposing the Indian batsmen’s vulnerability to short-pitched deliveries.

In the fourth over, opener Murali Vijay (7) was the first to depart after Darren Sammy pitched it short and he mistimed the pull to a diving Keiron Pollard at deep square. Gautam Gambhir (15) followed him soon in the next over after a fast and short Kemar Roach delivery kissed his gloves to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramadin. Yuvraj Singh (12) and Yusuf Pathan (17) also fell to short-pitched deliveries as the innings fell apart.

Raina and Dhoni (29) came up with some useful contributions but lost partners at the other end. Raina was severe on Pollard, hitting him for a six and two fours in three successive deliveries. With Raina on fire, Gayle brought himself to cut short his innings while Dhoni was run out after a direct hit from Dwayne Bravo.

Earlier in the day, sloppy fielding allowed the West Indies get a challenging total on the board. Gayle struck five fours and seven sixes in his typical style, after play started half-an-hour late because of a damp pitch.

West Indies openers Gayle and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (23) started cautiously as the Indian spinners extracted some sharp turn. Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh troubled the batsmen with some turn and bounce and conceded just 16 runs from his four overs.

But slowly, the West Indies batsmen cut loose and Gayle made the best of the life he got on 46 when he top-edged a pull off Ashish Nehra in the 12th over, but Dhoni and Pathan messed up the chance by colliding with each other.

Gayle reached his 50 from 41 balls when, two balls later, a thick edge off Nehra flew to third man for his third four.

Chanderpaul, remained a mute spectator during the 80-run stand with Gayle. Sammy smashed two fours and a six in 19 from 10 balls while the big-hitting Pollard two sixes in 17 from 11 balls before he was caught at long-on in the 19th over.

With two balls left, Gayle was run out and failed to achieve the record. He was the first to score a Twenty20 international hundred when he made 117, the highest Twenty20 individual score, against South Africa in the opening match of the inaugural World Twenty20 in Johannesburg in 2007.

Dhoni blames batsmen for World Twenty20 loss

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:50 AM PDT

Bridgetown (Barbados), May 9 (IANS) India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed the batsmen for his team’s 14-run loss to hosts West Indies in the Group F match in the Super Eight stage of the World Twenty20 at the Kensington Oval here Sunday.

‘Batting hasn’t been up to the expectation. Bowlers have done decently, give or take a few overs here and there. Batting is supposed to be our strength, and we should chase 170 in these conditions. We are hoping to give our best in the next game,’ said Dhoni.

West Indies skipper Chris Gayle, who hit a match winning 66-ball 98, said that he played the knock under pressure.

‘Good win, just what we needed. I was under pressure, not just cricket-wise but also given so much support. So it was important to play well myself,’ he said.

Gaga blasted over missing underwear!

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:50 AM PDT

London, May 9 (IANS) Pop star Lady Gaga is facing the wrath of bosses at an underwear company after she allegedly failed to return four ‘priceless’ items of lingerie.

The ‘Poker face’ hitmaker was reportedly sent seven undergarments from Rigby and Peller, which supplies underwear to British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, Gwyneth Paltrow and Sophie Dahl, among others.

Celebrifi.com reports that Gaga was sent the exclusive items on loan to wear in her next music video, but company bosses allege only three of the briefs were returned.

Executives at the company claim the underpants were prototypes for their 2010 autumn/winter collection unveiled at a fashion show May 3 and their loss could stall the production line.

‘Obviously we were delighted that Lady Gaga wanted to use our new pieces in her next video, but we did stress we needed them back in plenty of time for our press show,’ said a spokesperson for the company.

‘They are handmade, unique designs, simply priceless and not available anywhere in the world so we are really disappointed not to get them back for our major showcase of the year,’ the spokesperson added.

A spokesperson for Gaga said: ‘We’ve nothing to say.’

Brazilian companies launch trade fair in Dubai

Dubai, May 9 (IANS/WAM) About 200 Brazilian companies are participating in a three-day trade fair that opened here Sunday.

Brazil is a major source of food products for the Gulf. As a major property development hub, the Gulf also represents a solid housing and construction market for Brazil, which traded around $132 million in related products with the region in 2009.

Scientists end brides’ wedding dress storage dilemma

Posted: 09 May 2010 11:48 AM PDT

London, May 9 (IANS) British scientists have found a novel way to put an end to the age old dilemma of what brides should do with their wedding dress once their honeymoon is over.

Fashion and engineering students at Sheffield Hallam University have developed a wedding dress that can be recycled into five new fashion pieces.

The dress is made of polyvinyl alcohol, a biodegradable substance that is used in laundry bags and washing detergents, which is knitted into the fabric. This enables it to be dissolved into water without harming the environment.

‘The students wanted to challenge the notion that a wedding dress should only be used once and aimed to explore modern society’s attitudes towards throwaway fashion,’ telegraph.co.uk quoted Jane Blohm, a fashion lecturer, as saying.

‘The project is a union between art and technology which explores the possibilities of using alternative materials for our clothing.

‘The wedding gown is perhaps one of the most symbolic garments in (a woman’s) wardrobe and represents the challenges of ‘throwaway fashion’.

‘In order to reduce fashion’s impact on the environment, the fashion industry must begin to challenge conventional attitudes and practices,’ she added.

Man arrested for threatening Dikshit

Posted: 09 May 2010 10:28 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) A 25-year-old man was arrested Sunday for making an anonymous call warning that Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s life was in danger, police said.

Veer Singh, a resident of Farsh Vihar in east Delhi, allegedly made the call Thursday to implicate a man who was harassing him to repay his dues. He had stolen a mobile phone from Narela in outer Delhi to make the call to the police control room and then called up the other man.

‘Veer Singh thought the police would track down the other person and arrest him in connection with the death threat to the Delhi chief minister,’ a police officer said.

‘We apprehended him after systematic investigations,’ the officer added.

Delhi Police beefed up Dikshit’s ‘Z’ category security cover following the telephone call.

‘We got a call at 11 p.m. The caller said the chief minister’s life was in danger for the next 72 hours. As a precaution we have stepped up her security,’ a Delhi Police official said.

Dikshit, who has been chief minister of Delhi since 1998, said she was not worried.

‘I don’t have any fear. I am not worried,’ she told reporters on the sidelines of a function in the capital.

Dempo are I-League champions

Posted: 09 May 2010 10:26 AM PDT

Shillong, May 9 (IANS) Goa’s Dempo Sports Club Sunday emerged the I-League champions for the fourth time with a 1-0 win over relegation threatened Shillong’s Lajong Football Club here.

Skipper Anthony Pereira scored in the 37th minute to clinch the I-League title with one round still to go.

An elated Dempo coach Armando Colaco said: ‘We are almost champions and there is still one more match to go. The title is a great honour and a great privilege for us and we are proud of the boys who have given their best.’

The Goan outfit needed only a draw against Lajong to become champions in their 25th round match of the I-League.

With this win, Colaso’s side secured 53 points, much more than their nearest rivals Churchill Brothers and Mahindra United.

The match at the jam packed Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex started on a low note with none of the teams showing an urgency to break the deadlock and the contest was confined to the midfield.

Dempo received a set-back in the 15th minute when mid-fielder Climax Lawrence was replaced by Peter Calvalho after injuring his ankle during a collision with his Brazilian team mate Beto.

In the 37th minute, an unmarked Pereira stole the ball from a flag kick awarded to Lajong and raced into the box and gently placed it into the net as a hapless Gumpe Rime remained a mute spectator.

In the second half, Lajong came out with a better game plan and Dempo custodian Abhijit Mondal was alert, thwarting more than a dozen flag kicks.

Lajong came close to scoring in the 64th minute when substitute Anil Gurung headed the flag kick by Daniel Bidemi, but Mondal punched it out.

Brazilian playmaker Beto was declared the Man of the Match and was handed the award by Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

Lajong have managed only 26 points with just one round to go. The Stanley Rosario coached team will play their last match against Salgaocar Sports Club and will be looking to avoid relegation.

Chelsea thrash Wigan to lift Premier League title

Posted: 09 May 2010 10:26 AM PDT

London, May 9 (DPA) Chelsea romped to the Premier League title Sunday as they beat 10-man Wigan Athletic 8-0 with a hat-trick from Didier Drogba and a double from Nicolas Anelka.

The victory meant that they finished a point ahead of Manchester United, who beat Stoke City 4-0.

When Drogba headed the fifth, it carried Chelsea to 100 goals for the season, the first time any side has reached the mark in the English top flight since 1963.

If Chelsea had any nerves, they disappeared after six minutes.

A Drogba free-kick hit the wall, but as Frank Lampard returned the ball to the box, Florent Malouda, who was possibly offside, chested the ball down for Anelka to sweep in.

Wigan, fielding an unfamiliar three-at-the-back formation, began to dominate possession, although without ever really posing a threat, and the game was as good as ended as a contest after 32 minutes.

Lampard was hauled down in the box by Gary Caldwell, who was sent off, and stood up to rattle in his 22nd Premier League goal of the season.

Drogba barely celebrated, apparently furious he hadn’t been given the opportunity to take the penalty to increase his chances as finishing as the Premier League’s top scorer.

Kalou added a third nine minutes after half-time following a slick one-two with Lampard.

Two minutes later, Anelka volleyed a magnificent fourth from Branislav Ivanovic’s cross.

Drogba headed the fifth from a Lampard cross after 63 minutes, and then converted a penalty after Ashley Cole had been tripped five minutes later.

He completed his hat-trick with 10 minutes remaining, tapping in after Mike Pollitt had saved from Joe Cole.

That took his tally for the season to 29, making him the Premier League’s leading scorer, three clear of Wayne Rooney.

Chelsea had scored seven on three previous occasions this season; this time they went to eight, their biggest top-division win, as Ashley Cole volleyed in a Joe Cole cross in the final minute.

United did as much as they could, goals from Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs seeing them 2-0 up at half-time against Stoke.

A Danny Higginbotham own-goal and a Park Ji-Sung header extended their lead to 4-0, but it was too little, too late.

Arsenal held on to third as Robin van Persie, Andrei Arshavin, a Chris Baird own-goal and Alberto Vela helped them to a 4-0 win over Fulham, while fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 4-2 at relegated Burnley.

Manchester City retained fifth with a 1-1 draw at West Ham United, Aston Villa remained sixth despite a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers as Liverpool drew 0-0 draw with Hull City.

Elsewhere Bolton Wanderers beat Birmingham City 2-1, Everton beat Portsmouth 1-0 and Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Sunderland 2-1.

Jesica Parker feared ‘Sex and the City 2′ plot leak

Posted: 09 May 2010 10:10 AM PDT

London, May 9 (IANS) Hollywood actress Sarah Jessica Parker was so concerned about details of the ‘Sex and the City 2′ plot could be leaked on the Internet that she reportedly banned its cast and crew from discussing the storyline.

The actress, who plays writer Carrie Bradshaw in the franchise, is the executive producer of the film, which is set to hit movie theatres around the world later this month. The plot is a closely guarded secret, with movie bosses even filming fake scenes involving Kim Cattrall to throw gossips off the real story, reports contactmusic.com.

Parker was so keen to avoid a leak she allegedly told stars including Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon that anyone who publicly discussed the plot would be fined.

‘Also, every page of every script was watermarked with the name of the actor or crewmember to whom it belonged, so if pages were leaked, the mole could be identified,’ said a source.

Jharkhand chief minister’s post: Raghubar Das frontrunner

Posted: 09 May 2010 09:40 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) The Bharatiya Janta Party’s (BJP) Raghubar Das, who is the deputy chief minister in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led government in the state, has emerged the frontrunner for the chief minister’s post ahead of the party’s parliamentary board meet here Monday.

BJP sources said party chief Nitin Gadkari is in favour of appointing Raghubar Das as the Jharkhand chief minister. ‘Raghubar Das is the front runner,’ said a BJP leader on condition of anonimity.

Meanwhile, party sources said a lobby is strongly working for former chief minister Arjun Munda, who is now a Lok Sabha MP. Former union finance minister Yashwant Sinha is also eyeing the post.

‘A decision on who will be the next chief minister will be taken in the parliamentary board meeting tomorrow (Monday). The issue will be settled in that meeting,’ said party spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain but declined to give further details.

The BJP got an opportunity to form the government in the state under the settlement with the Shibu Soren-led JMM to end the political stalemate in the state. The row began as the BJP threatened to withdraw support after Soren, who has retained his Lok Sabha seat, voted in favour of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) April 27 against the BJP’s cut motion in the house.
