Reid showered with bottles and bananas!

Posted: 31 May 2010 11:09 AM PDT

London, May 31 (IANS) Cage fighter Alex Reid claims he has been showered with bottles and bananas while walking down a street.

“There were boos when I entered, but I thought: I can live with that. I expected a bit of pantomime behaviour, but it wasn’t nice when people started throwing bananas and bottles. That was unacceptable and I worried about taking Katie,” contactmusic.com quoted him as saying.

“It’s not nice – come on, guys. You had to see some of the hate that was directed towards us to believe it. It was borderline bullying,” he added.

Reid is married to model Katie Price.

Breakthrough in stem cell culture, holds hope for cures

Posted: 31 May 2010 11:08 AM PDT

London, May 31 (IANS) For the first time, human embryonic stem cells have been cultured under chemically controlled conditions without the use of animal proteins, paving the way for harvesting large quantities of stem cells to treat human diseases.

The method has been developed by researchers at Karolinska Institutet, in Stockholm, one of the foremost neuroscience research centers in Europe. The results of the latest research have been presented in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

Embryonic stem cells can be turned into any other type of cell in the body and have potential uses in treatments where sick cells need to be replaced.

However, a major problem is that it is difficult to culture and develop human embryonic stem cells without simultaneously contaminating them as they are cultured with the help of proteins from animals.

Another method is to culture the stem cells on other human cells, known as feeder cells, but these release thousands of uncontrolled proteins and, therefore, lead to unreliable research results.

A research team at Karolinska Institutet, KI, has managed to produce human stem cells entirely without the use of other cells or substances from animals. Instead, they are cultured on a matrix of a single human protein: laminin-511, according to News-Medical.net.

“Now, for the first time, we can produce large quantities of human embryonic stem cells in an environment that is completely chemically defined,” Professor Karl Tryggvason, who led the study said at the KI Monday. “This opens up new opportunities for developing different types of cell which can then be tested for the treatment of disease.”

Together with researchers at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, the KI researchers have also shown that they can culture in the same way what are known as “reprogrammed stem cells”, which have been converted “back” from tissue cells to stem cells.

~ Rest Continues Below ~

Laminin-511 is part of our connective tissue and acts in the body as a matrix to which cells can attach. In the newly formed embryo, the protein is also needed to keep stem cells as stem cells. Once the embryo begins to develop different types of tissue, other types of laminin are needed.

Until now, different types of laminin have not been available to researchers, because they are almost impossible to extract from tissues and difficult to produce.

Over the last couple of decades, Karl Tryggvason’s research group has cloned the genes for most human laminins, studied their biological role, described two genetic laminin diseases and, in recent years, even managed to produce several types of laminin using gene technology.

In this latest experiment, the researchers produced the laminin-511 using recombinant techniques, News-Medical.net said.

Assam, Meghalaya chief ministers to discuss border Saturday

Posted: 31 May 2010 11:02 AM PDT

Shillong, May 31 (IANS) Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Monday said he will meet his Assam counterpart Tarun Gogoi Saturday to resolve the inter-state boundary dispute.

“I have spoken to Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and finalised the date for discussions on the boundary dispute,” Sangma told reporters.

He said he has also spoken to Home Minister P. Chidambaram and updated him on the latest development on the boundary dispute.

The Meghalaya chief minister rang up Gogoi after Assam officials had forcefully occupied a health sub-centre at Psiar village, which is under the jurisdiction of Meghalaya’s Jaintia Hills district.

“I also took up the issue (Assam encroachment in Jaintia Hills district) with Gogoi and the Assam officials have vacated the centre this afternoon,” Sangma said.

Sangma said he has suggested to Gogoi to facilitate a meeting between the district administrations of Jaintia Hills and Karbi Anglong to instill confidence among the people living in the border area and to help rid them of the mistrust that has cropped up.

Asked what would be the reason behind Assam’s aggressive encroachment on Meghalaya land, the chief minister said his government’s priority is to solve the border issue with sincerity.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of Social Organisations (JACSO) of Jaintia Hills Tuesday asked Sangma to immediately set up permanent police outposts at Psiar, Mukroh and Khanduli with maximum strength in the wake of the ongoing encroachment by Assam.

On May 14, four Khasi people were killed and several injured in firing triggered by Assam Police personnel at Langpih village.

Langpih, a village on Meghalaya-Assam border, has been a bone of contention between the two neighbouring states.

A committee headed by the chief secretaries of both states has been formed to amicably resolve the boundary issue.

Nadal moves forward while Henin eliminated in Paris

Posted: 31 May 2010 11:01 AM PDT

Paris, May 31 (DPA) Rafael Nadal assumed his accustomed place in the later stages of the French Open Monday, his fourth-round defeat a year ago just a fading memory.

But his fellow quadruple tournament winner Justine Henin was unable to re-live her own glorious past on the clay of Roland Garros, with Australian seventh seed Samantha Stosur completing an upset of the Belgian 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Nadal, by contrast, polished his game further in anticipation of a fight to seize back the crown he lost in 2009 through a defeat by Swede Robin Soderling. The Spanish second seed got past Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci comfortably 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

“I’m happy, I’ve been playing better and better with each match,” said Nadal, who has won every match in straight sets. “I’ve got a lot of confidence in my game.”

The second seed from Mallorca will line up in an all-Iberian quarter-final after Nicolas Almagro put out seventh seed Fernando Verdasco 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Nadal will be playing in his 14th quarter from his last 16 majors.

Third seed Novak Djokovic advanced 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 over American Robby Ginepri and will next face Austrian Jurgen Melzer, who beat Teimuraz Gabashvili 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 a round after the Russian hammered Andy Roddick.

Melzer, who knows Roddick well, said he got some match advice from his absent friend, already in London to prepare for the grass season.

Melzer, ranked 22nd, is the first Austrian to reach the Paris quarters since Thomas Muster 12 years ago, claiming victory in just under three hours.

The Austrian has never gone this far at a major and is the oldest man remaining in the draw at age 29. He admitted to receiving some tactical advice on SMS before the contest from Roddick.

“It’s gonna be a tough match for both of us,” said Djokovic, “I wouldn’t give myself too much chances to win, It’s the Grand Slam quarter-finals, the matches are getting tougher.

“Physically you have to be very fresh and you have to expect the longer rallies. He’s very aggressive, he can play defensive and offensive at the same time. So that’s what makes him very dangerous.

“I’ll try to keep up the good rhythm that I had in last two matches, and the better man will win.”

Henin’s loss temporarily derails her career comeback scenario after quitting tennis in May, 2008, but returning at the start of this season as her motivation returned.

Stosur will play her quarter-final against top seed Serena Williams, who beat Shahar Peer of Israel 6-2, 6-2.

“You can never underestimate anyone, Sam is actually a wonderful clay court player,” said Williams. “She proved that last year,

“She’s someone you can’t overlook, she has a good chance to go all the way.”

Henin won the French Open 2003 and three straight years 2005-2007 before not playing the past two editions after she quit.

But Monday the Belgian fell apart under the pressure at the event where she is considered as good as French by the fickle Roland Garros crowd.

“I can’t believe it, I’m so happy to be through,” said Stosur, who had earlier in May lost the Stuttgart final to Henin.

“After the first set, I told myself to keep going. I knew what I dad to do, I just had to do it.

“After the double-fault on match point, I just shook it off, had a laugh and didn’t worry about it. I knew I had some more good serves. I just played the point out.”

Horst Koehler steps down over Afghanistan remarks

Posted: 31 May 2010 06:05 AM PDT

Berlin, May 31 (DPA) German President Horst Koehler announced his resignation Monday, over controversial comments he made about Germany’s military role in Afghanistan.

Koehler had suggested during a recent trip to Afghanistan that the German military was active in the region to defend economic interests.

Monday, he said he could not justify the remarks he had made, and said he had not exercised the necessary respect for his office.

This is the first time in German post-war history that a president has resigned. The speaker of Germany’s upper house of parliament, Jens Boehrnsen, is to fill the post until a successor is chosen.

The 67-year-old member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats held the post since July 2004. He was re-elected to the largely ceremonial role last year.

Fabio Capello 3 decisions that Capello

Posted: 31 May 2010 06:03 AM PDT

London, May 31 (IANS) England manager Fabio Capello has to make three key decisions – one in defence, one in midfield and one in attack – before finalising his 23 for the football World cup in South Africa.

The Daily Telegraph reported that in defence Capello appears to have settled on Leighton Baines ahead of Stephen Warnock to understudy Ashley Cole.

But the options further up the pitch are more complicated.

The daily reported that the England manager sets great store by what players do in training, not just matches, and sometimes he plays those he is unsure about to confirm his suspicions.

Capello, however, is undecided on Emile Heskey, Darren Bent and Jermain Defoe. Bent needed a convincing performance and a goal with, intriguingly, Capello considering him as an alternative to the out-of-form Defoe rather than Heskey.

It appears that Heskey will go along with Peter Crouch as the squad’s two “big” strikers. Defoe should keep his place with Bent remaining a rank outsider.

Another question that is troubling the 64-year-old Italian is regarding, Joe Cole, Adam Johnson and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Cole’s impact and bright display against Japan may have ended Johnson’s hopes and cemented his place.

Capello appears to have decided it is too early for Manchester City’s winger. His team-mate, Wright-Phillips, did well enough but may be one wide player too many, though Theo Walcott’s aimless performance raised question marks over his suitability. The main conclusion is that Cole definitely goes to South Africa.

On Michael Carrick, Tom Huddlestone and Scott Parker, Huddlestone still might make it but is now an outside shot, with Capello springing to Carrick’s defence even though he recognises the Manchester United midfielder is suffering a crisis of confidence. The only chance of a reprieve for Huddlestone would appear to be if Gareth Barry fails to make it.

Israeli Commandos’ Violence Abet Flotilla, Killed 10

Posted: 31 May 2010 05:47 AM PDT

JERUSALEM (DLN) — Israeli nautical commandos squall a fleet of ships hauling many pro-Palestinian protesters to the prohibited Gaza Strip on Monday. With its predawn raid 10 people got killed leading towards its condemnation.

Authorities said that Israel forces bumped into surprised confrontation as they entered the craft. Many passengers along with five Israeli soldiers were injured in confront.

Israel’s harsh answer prompted extensive criticism in European countries as many of the travelers were from Europe. The raid also stressed already edgy terms with Israel's Muslim supporter Turkey, the informal adherent of the action, and extracts more interest to the troubles of Gaza’s 1.5 million people.Turkey declared it was hailing back its ambassador to Israel, terminating 3 combined military drills and asked the U.N. Security Council to assemble in an emergency meeting about Israel.

All its ambassadors seating in Sweden, Spain, Denmark and Greece were given a call for urgent session and the French foreign minister is up for inquiry.

The aggressive conquest also endangered to pact yet one more rage to Israel’s international figure, already stained by war offense allegations in Gaza and its prohibition of the insolvent Palestinian region.

It happened just a day prior to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House over peace.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy criticised “the disproportionate use of force” against the flotilla.

“All light must be shed on the circumstances of this tragedy, which underlines the urgency of resuming peace talks,” he said in a statement.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak showed grief over the deaths but held responsible the hostility on organizers of the flotilla, stating the attempt a “political provocation” by anti-Israel forces.

An Al-Jazeera journalist on ship said the Israelis fired at the craft even prior entering into it. The Israelis, who had announced they won't allow ships arrive at Gaza, said they only started fire after being bothered by protesters.

“On board the ship we found weapons prepared in advance and used against our forces,” declared Israel’s deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon.

“The organizers’ intent was violent, their method was violent and the results were unfortunately violent. Israel regrets any loss of life and did everything to avoid this outcome.”

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas criticised the Israeli “aggression,” affirmed 3 days of grief across the West Bank.

Israel’s military chief, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi, counter attacked him by saying that Israeli soldiers were enforced to act such by protesters.

The protesters were on the way to Gaza in order to draw attention towards a 3-year-old Israeli obstruction of the coastal region. Israel forced the barrier after Hamas that it believes a militant group, aggressively detained the region.

Greta Berlin, spokeswoman for the Free Gaza movement said, “It’s disgusting that they have come on board and attacked civilians. We are civilians,” she has planned the flotilla.

Turkey’s NTV showed protesters were being beaten by soldier with sticks as he hopped on the boats from a helicopter.

Hasan Naiboglu, the Turkish maritime affairs undersecretary, in an interview told that Israel had wedged exchanges with the ships which is a violation of international law.

The United Nations also showed “shock” and criticised the killings.

“We are in contact with the Israeli authorities to express our deep concern and to seek a full explanation,” said a statement from the U.N. official, Robert Serry.

This is the 9th occasion that the Free Gaza activity has struggled to ship in civilized aid to Gaza since 2008.

Gaza Flotilla: India advocated condemning Israeli attack on flotilla

Posted: 31 May 2010 04:32 AM PDT

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) Monday urged the government to condemn the Israeli attack on a flotilla of six ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“India must also work actively with other countries from the non-aligned nations in the UN and other bodies to force Israel to lift the illegal siege of Gaza,” the CPI-M said in a statement.

The statement said Israeli armed forces “illegally attacked” the flotilla in international waters Sunday night, killing at least 15 international activists and injuring many.

About 700 activists from a number of countries were on the six ships aiming to take 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Gaza, “which has been under relentless siege for almost three years now”.

“The attack … shows the complete contempt Israel has for international law or international opinion. Attacking ships in international waters and killing its passengers is a brazen act of piracy,” it said.

FIFA 2010: Can Italy save the FIFA World cup title?

Posted: 31 May 2010 04:10 AM PDT

Rome, May 31 (DPA) Just two countries have ever protected their football World Cup title. And controlling world champions Italy hope to become the 1st to be successful back-to-back crowns two times – and the 1st since Brazil in 1962.

The Brazilians were the second country to repeat their world title in 1958 and 1962 after Italy had accomplished the feat in the second and third World Cups in 1934 and 1938.

Italy are also trying to match Brazil as the only other five-time world champions, going along with their other 1982 crown. The task, however, will not be easy for Italy’s 2010 boss Marcelo Lippi, who became a national hero for guiding the Azzurri to 2006 glory. Lippi left the team after the Germany spectacle but replaced successor Roberto Donadoni, who could only lead Italy to the Euro 2008 quarter-finals.

Lippi has much of the same group of players as his back, with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, captain Fabio Cannavaro, Fabio Grosso and Gianluca Zambrotta now four years older as they man the defence – their ages ranging from 32 to 36.

Midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo also hope that their experience has increased with age as Lippi has found no rising star among the several newcomers he tested.

Up front there remain questions about top notch quality without a real clinical striker to rely on, unless one among Vincenzo Iaquinta, Alberto Gilardino, Riccardo Pazzini or Antonio Di Natale step up their game.

Especially since Sampdoria’s Antonio Cassano, possibly the best supporting striker in the Serie A, never met the favour of Lippi.

The Italians had a solid qualifying campaign, finishing atop Group 8 ahead of Ireland and Bulgaria. Lippi’s men did not lose a match and only allowed seven goals in their 10 matches.

In South Africa, the Azzurri will face off against Paraguay, New Zealand and Slovakia in Group F.

And Lippi remains faithful to his trusted veteran guard. “You don’t judge a player’s quality on age or technical ability alone. Enthusiasm, experience, charisma, wisdom, international experience: they’re all part of the equation,” Lippi told the FIFA website recently.

“The World Cup is about seven games over a month. We don’t necessarily need all the players to be 24 years old. If I had to use this team over an entire league season, I’d probably make some

different selections. But for a month, it’s not a problem.”

Also not a problem this time for Lippi and his players is the corruption scandal which hung over the team in 2006 as Italian football was rocked by the scandal in the buildup to Germany 2006.

Now Lippi and the team can concentrate on a historic repeat.

The coach: Before lifting Italy’s fourth World Cup in 2006, the 61-year-old Marcello Lippi built his reputation as coach at Juventus. In two stints with the Turin side, he won five Serie A titles between 1994 and 2003.

In 1996, he won the Intercontinental Cup with Juve, which makes him the only trainer to have won world titles with a club and a national team.

In South Africa, Lippi hopes to follow the path of Vittorio Pozzo, who steered Italy to two consecutive world titles in 1934 and 1938. A fifth cup would also bring Italy level with top-winners Brazil.

The star: With the 2006 world title, Gianluigi Buffon, 31, topped a career that he spent for the most part at Juventus, where he won two Serie A titles, after an early stint at Parma.

Equally effective between the posts and in tackling onrushing strikers, Buffon is the most nominated as best custodian by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, whose award he received four times.

He closed the 2006 World Cup beaten only by an own goal and a free kick and came in second behind Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro.

Reliance Communications pays USD 1.91 billion for 3G spectrum

New Delhi, May 31 (IANS) RCom led by Anil Ambani on Monday paid Rs.8,585.04 crore (USD 1.91 billion) towards spectrum fees to the govt. to begin 3G telecom services in India.

RCom is one of the three private telecom operators which won 3G spectrum in 13 service areas, including the most lucrative Mumbai and Delhi circles, in an auction of airwaves that concluded May 19.

“RCom’s nationwide 3G-ready network offers a number of innovations to its over 102 million customers… RCom won 3G spectrum in all circles where it has 900 MHz spectrum. The 13 circles where it has obtained 3G spectrum include all high growth ‘C’ circles for less than Rs.500 crore,” the company said in a statement.

This makes RCom the only operator which has pan-India 3G capability in CDMA and among the top three with highest 3G-enabled coverage, the statement added.

The company will have minimal capex investment into 3G network due to its nationwide state-of-the-art GSM network.

It will leverage its media, gaming, cinema and broadcasting capabilities to offer its customers a “unique true 3G experience”.

According to the guidelines of Department of Telecommunications (DoT), May 31 is the last date for all telecom firms to make payments for 3G spectrum.

Bharti Airtel, which also won 3G spectrum in 13 circles, has paid Rs.12,295.46 crore ($2.73 billion) to DoT, a company official told IANS.

The third winner, Aircel paid Rs.6,499.46 crore ($1.44 billion). “We made payment for the 3G on Friday (May 28),” a company spokesperson said.

Nine companies — Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Tata Teleservices, Aircel, Etisalat, S Tel and Videocon Telecommunications — participated in the 3G spectrum auction.

However, Etisalat and Videocon could not win a single circle in the auction, which fetched the government Rs.67,718.95 crore ($15 billion).
