California earthquake: no reports of damage Posted: 14 Jun 2010 11:03 PM PDT An earthquake measuring 5.7-magnitude on the Richter scale struck southern California with the tremors being felt in Los Angeles and San Diego. As per the California Integrated Seismic Network, the epicenter of the quake was about 5 miles southeast of Ocotillo, within the Imperial County, near the Mexican border. In addition, western Arizona and some parts of Mexico also experienced aftershocks. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 4.3 miles. However, no damages or casualties have been reported. The major quake was followed by several smaller tremors but few of them exceeded the 4.0 magnitude on the Richter scale. However, a cautious the Los Angeles Fire Department has adopted an Earthquake Mode that dispatches firefighters to check for damages. Their spokesman Devin Gales has said the move was taken as a preventive measure. Two months back, another quake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale had caused destruction in the Mexicali area of Mexico. Meanwhile, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center ruled out possibilities of tsunami in the aftermath of the quake. |
