Posted: 28 Sep 2010 07:34 AM PDT No rough edges…check. No batteries….check. No lead in the paint…check. China needs desperately to come up with something that can pass all the safety standards and be in no danger of a recall. How about something that is also environmentally friendly…always a good buzz-word. China has a solar-energy-powered toy that can turn the sunlight and lamplight into electricity….so that when it just sits there it takes much much longer to burn up energy. I give up…what's the little five-leaf clover thingee do? |
Ayodhya verdict on Sept 30, All states put on high alert Posted: 28 Sep 2010 04:45 AM PDT The Indian Supreme Court today gave a green signal to the Allahabad High Court to give its verdict on the Ayodhya Ram Temple/Babri MAsjid dispute, dismissing a petition that sought its deferment. “The verdict will be announced on 30th (September) at 3:30 p.m. (1000 GMT),” said Subodh Sahay, registrar of the court in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya verdict: All states put on high alertAn apex court bench of Chief Justice S.H. Kapadia, Justice Aftab Alam and Justice K.S. Radhakrishnan passed the brief order when the court reassembled after lunch break Tuesday. Speaking for the bench, Chief Justice Kapadia said: “Having heard the arguments in detail, we are of the view that the petition deserves to be dismissed.” Attorney General G. Vahanvati told the court: “If there is any possibility of the settlement (out of court), we will welcome it but at the same time we don’t want any uncertainty to continue.” “For the sake of maintaining law and order, we cannot keep security forces in sustained animation,” he added. The apex court last week ordered an interim stay on the pronouncement of the title suit verdict by the high court, acting on a petition by Tripathi. |
China Moves On Intellectual Property Rights Of Foreign Textbooks Posted: 28 Sep 2010 03:34 AM PDT Chinese universities have banned illegally copied foreign textbooks. The Ministry of Education has given universities until the end of the year to clean up its act. Chinese universities and students aren’t able to afford the higher quality textbooks…thus they resort to photocopying them. It’s no surprise. American students can’t afford to buy textbooks either. The textbook companies ‘renew’ the books every year as well to keep students from passing them on to underclassmen. China’s largest private English school, the New Oriental School, was sued by U.S.-based Educational Testing Service because NOS copied and sold test materials. The fine was $450,000. China seems to be getting more and more serious about intellectual property rights. As a textbook writer, I applaud this initiative and hope to see it carried through. I also wish textbook publishers would make their products more afforadble. What do you think? |
