‘Munni Badnaam’ a takeoff from Bhojpuri folk

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 01:40 PM PDT

Munni Badnaam from Dabangg'Dabangg' is making a splash at the box office breaking all conceivable records with a significant help from the song 'Munni Badnaam' which is nothing but a takeoff from the Bhojpuri folk song 'Launda Badnaam Hua, Naseeban Tere Liye”.

This song in the movie is making everyone go berserk young and old alike adds to the long list of 'inspired' songs from the very rich and wealthy collection of traditional folk songs we have in India in every language spoken on the land. This one crooned in the local album 'Balmaa badaa Bavaali' by Rani Bala released in '98 has 'Munni' taking 'Naseebans' place to charm one and all including the 'darling'.

The "masaledaar" version of the crude folk song has Malaika Arora Khan matching the 'oomph' of the song step by step as the music director working wonders with the tempo and the beats of the song. Bappi Lahiri's "Rock Dancer" had it pretty plainly as “Launda Badnaam Hua Laundiya Tere Liye.” But the affect 'Munni' has is unprecedented.

The director of the irresistibly hot Salman Khan starrer "Dabangg" Anurag Kashyap however accepted the usage and inspiration from the popular folk song. “Munni” ka genesis yeh hai ki, main UP mein pala bada hoon, aur wahaan ek folk song sunta tha bachpan mein, “Launda Badnaam Hua Naseeban Tere Liye”. Toh jab reference ki baat aayi ki kis tarah ka gaana hona chahiye, toh iss gaane ka reference aaya aur ispe humne improvise karke, phrase banaya, munni badnaam hui darling tere liye" he said.

The list of inspiration from local songs is endless. The rustic UP has always been enlivened onscreen with such traditional songs. Nobody knew "Yamma Yamma, Yeh Khoobsurat Samaa” had inkling from Persian folk track “Mastom Mastom”and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s “Saare Nabian” was inspiration for "Hum Apke Hain Kaun's" immensely popular song "Didi Tera Dewar Deewana." Aishwarya's "Nimbooda", Faakhir’s ‘Marjawan’ in "Aashiq Banaya Apne" and "Genda Phool" a Chattisgarhi folk were copied as it is. The character of a remix Album maker played by Anil Kapoor in "Taal", aptly describes the situation.

No doubt the catchy beats are added in the name of remixing the songs the very soul of the song remains as pure and enchanting as ever thus appealing to the psyche of the masses all the time. So the innocent 'Munni' always gets 'badnaam' in the name of audience demand!!!

Vishwakarma: The Hindu Lord of Craftsmen and Architects

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 10:55 AM PDT

Vishwakarma

Vishwakarma is considered to be the reigning God of craftsmen, architects or builders. He is said to be the son of Brahma, the one who is the Creator of this universe. Vishwakarma is the lord who is responsible for all the beautiful designs and divine touch in the palaces of other deities. He is the reason why their weapons are so wickedly attractive and destructive and he is the builder who is behind all their luxurious flying chariots.

His description in the Mahabharata is vividly drawn as- “The lord of the arts, executor of a thousand handicrafts, the carpenter of the gods, the most eminent of artisans, the fashioner of all ornaments … and a great and immortal god.”

The Vishwakarma Puja: It is the festival in honour of the God who is considered a blessing for architects and engineers alike. The builders of the world get together every year on September 17 or 18th to celebrate Vishwakarma Puja as a mark of respect and thanksgiving. It is a time for rejoicing the blessings of the benevolent architect of the Gods to weave his magic spell and help in prosperity of his sons and daughters on Earth. Along with the enthusiasm for kite flying, the real Puja is held indoors in the actual workspace of the craftsmen which for them is a place for worship.

Vishwakarma's Architectural Exploits: Vishwakarma is the known maker of innumerable mythological wonders which are architectural marvels. The dwelling place of the other Gods or the 'Swarga Loka' was his creation at the beginning of time as also was the fabled 'Sone Ki Lanka' which was the golden palace of Ravana, the Demon King. Dwaraka which is currently a pilgrimage for the Hindus is another one of his creations. This mythical township was built by him at the behest of Lord Vishnu.

Hastinapur, the land of the famous Pandavas and Kauravas of Hindu mythology was built by Lord Vishwakarma and so was Indraprastha, which is mythical but said to be an architectural miracle. It is a great gesture towards Lord Vishwakarma that workers and builders alike celebrate it with fervour and respect that comes from standing in awe of this great miracle worker, Lord Vishwakarma.

RBI Increases Repo Rates: Loans Now a Costly Affair

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 10:49 AM PDT

The Reserve Bank of India has revised their policies regarding the lending & borrowing rates. The new rates now stand at 25 base points higher values. On Thursday RBI released their revisions in their debut mid-quarterly policy review. The move has been taken so as to rein in the inflation rate in India.

July saw an inflation rate of 9.8% which later decreased to 8.5% in August. The inflation rates were revealed by the government on Tuesday based on the 2004-05 prices. Inspite of the visible decline in inflation, fact is there still needs to be some measures to control the pressures of inflation that's adversely affecting the money flow in India. The move by RBI to increase the repo rates has been debated upon by many experts.

“I think RBI may go for hike in each of the two key policy rates, repo and reverse repo, by 25 basis points each as there was an upward bias towards the interest rates. I also see a possible hike in cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 25 basis points as there was ample liquidity available into the system,” said S Raman, chairman and managing director, Canara Bank.

SA Bhat, chairman and managing director, Indian Overseas Bank agreed but said–”However, I don’t think if the RBI will go for any hike in CRR,” Subir Gokarn, deputy governor at RBI said-”The inflation rates that the economy is now experiencing, both from the supply and the demand sides, are clearly a matter of great concern. It is incumbent on the government and the central bank to use all the means at their disposal to rein inflation.”

Till date RBI has increased their policy rates by 1.25% bp. A rate of 0.25% and 0.50% for repo & reverse repo was fixed in July. The current rates stand at 5.75%, and 4.50% respectively.

India's gross domestic product saw an increase by 8.8% in the first quarter of 2010. This was better than the GDP rate of 6% in the first quarter of 2009. Also the industrial output has witnessed a hike by 13.8% this year as compared to 7.2% in the month of July 2009.

Rahul and Dimpy not to feature in Bigg Boss 4

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 10:43 AM PDT

Rahul and Dimpy

There was much speculation and anxiety in the media that Rahul Mahajan and his wife Dimpy may be a part of Bigg Boss 4 but now they have come up and openly stated that they are not participating in the gameshow.

Dimpy whose very sexy and explicit videos of frolicking in the pool with guys had made headlines very recently is not very far behind her husband in courting controversies and relishing it too. The couple also made a drama out of the domestic violence episode with Dimpy making various comments on his dad and the abusive husband although she pardoned him when he was ever so dramatically saying sorry to her and to take him back.

The couple says these reports are just rumors and they were in the city and very much together enjoying the festivities. Dimpy denied commenting on whether she was offered participation in Bigg Boss 4 but confirmed that she's not in it for sure.

They were very much anticipated to be a part of the show but with Mahajan also claiming no participation everything comes to rest. The couple however would have to find newer ways to remain in news and even take pride in the bas press they get. So going by the policy of any publicity being good for the people involved in it the couple is making hay while the sun shines.

Illegal drug consumption last year maximum in a decade

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 08:39 AM PDT

The survey done by the U.S government has put light on the fact that the usage of illegal drugs like meth, marijuana and ecstasy has gone up sharply in the year that past and the percentage rise is the maximum in a decade.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration conducted the study and prepared the annual report with the observation that marijuana was the most preferred and there was an 8% hike in its consumption while only good news is that cocaine has lost ground with reports showing 32% decline from the brow in 2006.

The annoying reports further show that now 21.8 million i.e. 8.7% of the adult population was consuming these prohibited drugs in 2009 while about 20 million of the age-group of 12 and above was using them in 2006 which was the capstone at the time. The study has started in 2002 and this year's rise is the maximum yet when considering the data for the whole of the decade.

Marijuana Policy Project which has been pressing for legalizing the drug in USA and Mike Meno, its spokesman voiced the views of the people involved with the group saying that the Govt. has completely ill-designed ways of tackling the burning problem and should now accept its failure getting further stringent laws of taxation in place as we have for alcohol and tobacco.

The very spirited public safety campaign launched in 2000s to spread awareness and warnings against the banned drugs like ecstasy and meth waned as initial reports suggested decline in usage that time but a sustained effort on the part of the Govt. is needed. The survey has been conducted based on questionnaires and personal interviews of 67,500 people and is a very reliable one.

Other such studies have reported 37% increase in ecstasy and 60% hike in meth addicts. The banned drugs are finding more acceptance with medical marijuana sales also on the rise. The federal law issued in 2006 was helpful in declining meth sales but later loopholes were found by the abusers and "smurfing" was witnessed that means people got substance from different pharmacies and accumulated medicines to get the drug prepared in the kitchen without much effort. The across the border availability was also seen from Mexico showing rise in the drug abuse.

National Drug Control Policy office director Gil Kerlikowske was dissatisfied with the current trend and showed no amazement about the increased rate of usage as he was very much aware of the "eroding attitudes" in the public perception which was sending wrong signals to the younger generation projecting marijuana as a medicine since many states were declaring it such.

The consumption and acceptance these illegal drugs are getting have made the efforts of the authorities go down the drain and the last years sustained rise in the figures are now posing greater risk than ever because these are the highest recorded in the decade.

Dearness Allowance: DA increased by 10 % for government employees

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 06:16 AM PDT

The central government employees are in for a double treat this season. They were recently overjoyed because of the hike in the interest rate on the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF). And now, the government employees have another occasion to celebrate.

The Central Government today announced a 10 percent increase in the Dearness Allowance (DA) taking it to 45 percent of the basic pay. This comes as a reason to rejoice for some 88 lakh employees and pensioners who will be benefited with this hike just in time for the festive season ahead.

This announcement regarding the increase in DA for the government employees will result in expense of an added `9,303.2 per year for an exchequer, as proclaimed by an official spokesperson following the meeting of the Union Cabinet which came to this decision of raising the DA.

The central government employees and the pensioners will be paid according to the new DA conditions from July 1, 2010 and the excess liability for the ongoing fiscal  is estimated to be `6,202.1 crore.

The spokesperson further added that the raise in the DA is in accord with the formula based on the proposals put forward by the Sixth Pay Commission. The current rate of DA is 35 percent which is calculated as a percentage of the basic pay of the employees is paid to counterbalance their incomes as opposed to the rising expenditures of day-to-day life.

Inflation was placed at 8.5 % last month (August) whereas the food inflation is standing around 15 %, as per the new WPI indices. The increase in DA comes as a relief for the employees as Dussehra and Diwali are just round the corner, the former in October and the latter in November. This decision will be a reason to cheer about for around 50 lakh employees of the central government and around 38 lakh pensioners.

RBI

In the wake of high inflation, the Reserve Bank of India has increased the repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.75 to 6% and the reverse repo rate by 50 basis points to 5% from 4.50%. The hikes are expected to be in the right direction and are supported by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and chief economic advisor Kaushik Basu. The former hoped that the hike would ensure better liquidity while Basu said that the measure would not affect growth prospects. The revisions were made on Thursday and will come into force with immediate effect.

Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission meanwhile assured that the revised rates will not hamper the prospects of foreign portfolio investments. The banks can now increase the deposit rates though the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) corridor requires narrowing the gap between loans and deposit rates. Kaushik Basu also added that inflation trend seems uncertain, but shall come down by the first quarter of 2011. Basu noted that keeping inflation in mind, more steps are likely from the RBI. He was hinting at the possibility of more hikes in the future.

A day before government had hiked the interest rate on the provident fund by 100 basis points. Both the measures would offer a festive treat to the 5 million employees and around 3.8 million pensioners of the central government.

Inflation has remained high, with 8.5 per cent in August. Food inflation too has soared above15 per cent, reveals the new wholesale price index as the base year has been changed from 2004-05 from 1993-94. In addition, 241 new items have also been included to assess the wholesale price index.

Duttabhau

Nakusha, played by Mahi Vij seems to be the reason behind the change in Duttabhau(Mishal Raheja)'s wardrobe in Laagi Tujhse Lagan on Colors.

Yes, Dutta is all set to impress his lady love by wearing what she wants and likes him to wear.

It seems earlier Nakusha had commented on his attire and suggested certain colors would look good on him. Now he has got the opportunity to woo her while going for change in his dressing style. However, the actor himself is impressed with the change. In the soap, Dutta was used to the coats /blazers with jeans outdoors but now wears them indoors as well.

The Maharashtrian look is till retained by wearing the typical checkered shirt inside. It seems Dutta does not want to forgo the chance to keep his new love happy, says Mishal. He also feels that the new look itself is great.

He adds that though the long kurtas were more impressive, they had to be done away with as they would not not suit the character of Dutta. Mishal comments that his new look is perfect for the role. However, the final verdict would belong to Nakusha for whom the whole change has been initiated.

The Montreal Protocol was singed by our nation as well and deals with the commitment to abate ozone damage by phasing out materials that bring about ozone depletion. Extending across 15 km-55 km, ozone layer protects the earth surface from the harmful UV rays that can adversely cause a lot of damage to both life and biosphere of earth.

The prime factors responsible for the depletion of this layer include usage of air conditioners, perfumes, hair sprays, deodorants and many other products that stand at a count of around 200 in number releasing chemical component chlorofluorocarbons. The protocol states directions that can help reduce the damage that is being made and also the commitment to reduce any such products that are harmful for the well-being of earth and its ozone layer.

Movie Review: West Is West by Andy DeEmmony

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 01:51 AM PDT

West is West

West is West

Andy DeEmmony's 'West Is West' is a film based in the North of England during the year 1975. The story takes us to Manchester where a Pakistani family strives for survival with its claustrophobic and dysfunctional take on living. The film is originally based on the 1999 version of East Is East starring Om Puri but in this 2010 sequel it is the Pakistani shop owner who must adjust according to the cultural differences proposed by his return to his native place after 30 years of abandoning it.

The original version was a thorough success and hence the challenge that West Is West has on hand is to cope up with the feat that was established by East Is East.

The sequel has been penned down by the same writer Ayub Khan-Din so this will probably help meeting about same or better standards of this film. The film focuses on the same old issue of the traditional nations battling with the western culture, but this same old battle has a new ground to fight upon these issues. The movie begins in a futuristic covering a period of five years ahead in Salford, England. The family members of George Khan have either moved out of the house or have got married leaving George all alone with his British wife (Linda Bassett) and his youngest son (Aqib Khan).

Sajid his youngest son hates his cultural Pakistani heritage because of the racial differences he is subjected to at his school. Suffering a mixed up identity both father and son go back to their roots for a recollection. This trip brings a bitter truth forth when George turns Joginder and has to face the family and his wife he left behind. Om Puri can be given creditability applause as he essays one of the most comic roles ever seen in recent British flicks.

Action Replayy

Action Replayy

Action Replayy is also planning to play well on the publicity tactic and hence it is Akshay and Aishwarya who will rock the floor with their retro look coupled with their retro music. Yes both Akki and Aish will be together at a night club playing out some cool numbers dressed as the late 20th century hero and heroine with Akki sporting those long hairs, bell bottom pants with printed dotted shirts that will be seen on him for his film Action Replayy and Aish will put up tied tops, dotted skirts, platform shoes and huge round earrings.

After cooking for the Desi version of Top Chef, Akshay is now trying his hands at DJ-ing. The supporting factor is that Akshay himself is a huge fan of retro music and has a large collection of Boney M hits stored as CD's and is going to use his collection for the club.

Close sources also revealed that the actor is getting some expert help too so that he can professionally scratch on turn tables with that perfectionist hint. Vipul Shah who is looking forward to the event confirmed that Akshay will actually rock the floor as his retro music will do the magic required to bring back that 1970's essence. Both Aish and Akki will be contending each other with their own kind of favorite retro music.

So the event will in any case be no less than spectacular. Vipul also added that he has no clue about the numbers that will be played that night but he is looking forward to some electrifying stuff.

Dabangg 2 in the pipeline; Sonu Sood to play twins in the sequel

Dabangg

Dabangg

We have entered unto an era of sequels. Just a week from the release of the blockbuster Dabangg, its sequel already is in the pipeline. It is joining the likes of recent sequels like All the Best, Partner and Golmaal. It was already in the minds of the production team even before the original Dabangg had hit the theatres; they had anticipated this overwhelming response of the masses towards Chulbul Pandey. The producer Arbaaz Khan, who must be now recording the profit made by the movie, said, "Yes a sequel is definitely on the cards. And why just a sequel? The film and the main character has the potential to be carried forward through various channels."

On Saturday evening, on the Eid celebrations at Bandra (Salman's residence) which saw the presence of the entire Khan clan and the cast and crew of Dabangg and surprisingly, Aftab Shivdasani, the announcement regarding Dabangg 2 was officially done. Going by the public euphoria towards Dabangg, he decided that it was better to hit with the sequel now when the iron is still hot.

This was followed by an intense discussion of the details where it was settled that the Abhishek Kashyap will be again handed over the task of direction and has been filled in with the plot of the story. A source reveals that the principal cast of Salman Khan, Sonu Sood and Sonakshi Sinha will continue to be an integral part of the story. But the backdrop of the movie may shift from the current UP vicinities to an outsized city that could be Mumbai.

Sonu Sood, who played the role of a small town criminal-politician, will play two look-alike characters in the second part. Chedi Singh, Sood's character, will be now given a twin brother. Sonu Sood verified the reports saying, "Salman was the most charged person at his Eid party. We were all in a mood to celebrate. When Salman suggested we do the sequel, we started discussing it very seriously. I can't reveal too many details at the moment. But yes my character, Chedi Singh, will have a twin brother in the sequel."

Salman was really eager about the sequel even when the original movie was under way. He announced the sequel to the entire cast when a wedding sequence was being shot in Dabangg. While, they have yet to decide upon other cast and crew members of the movie, Dabangg is expected to be started towards the end of this year. And, not to forget, it will have an item number surpassing Munni Badnaam Hui of Malaika Arora fame.

Nainsukh Movie Review with an Arty Effect

Film Festival

Film Festival

Based on the life of a painter, Nainsukh of Guler, Amit Dutta's feature film 'Nainsukh' has already won a round of applause at the Venice film festival. The film is produced under the Museum Rietberg Zurich production house and the screen play done by Ayswarya Sankarnarayanan and the director.

The movie has a huge cast of actors comprising of Manish Soni, Nitin Goel, K. Rajesh, Sriniwas Joshi, Yamini Joshi, Sat Salarwi, Mohan Singh, Anil Raina, Gautam Vyathit, Ankit Raina, Pushpendra Singh, Brahmaswaroop Mishra, Shubham Vardhan, Dhananjai Singh, Samarth Dixit, Amit Singh, Ajit Singh Rathore and Vishnu Tailor. The dialogues of the film are basically in Dogri and Kangri.

The story of this flick revolves beautifully around the 18th century painter narrating a poetic essay on his life. The movie is rich in imagery and has a gorgeous back ground base of Jammu and Kashmir. The final product seems more like a work based on galleries rather than a proper cinema. Well this point may actually hold the attention of fest that have an arty bend.

With heavy doses of naturalism, Nainsukh revolves around the rich heritage of the painter, with the role of Nainsukh being essayed by Manish Soni himself; the film focuses on the painter's works that record daily life and also the court undertakings that are usually spend thrift. Dutta tries to revive the Rajput world through his film and has shot many scenes in the Jasrota palace itself for that realistic appeal. The movie will hit theater houses soon and will purposely cater to many art lovers.
