Bollywood Actor Arya Babbar turns comic book writer Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:24 AM PDT Bollywood actor Arya Babbar has embarked on a new career as he released his first comic book here Wednesday. Arya launched his first graphic comic book titled "Pushpak Viman", which, according to him, is a contemporary take on Hindu mythology. "I like to write a lot. It is one of my stress busters. Moreover, I am a huge fan of mythological stories. I have been working on this book for the past three-and-a-half or four years. 'Pushpak Viman' has been a major link between two biggest mythological epics 'Ramayana' and 'Mahabharata'," Arya told reporters during the comic book's launch at the Oxford Book Store here. "I did a lot of research to get my facts right while I was writing the book. While most people know that after abducting Sita, Ravana had taken her to Lanka on the Pushpak Viman in 'Ramayana', not many know that in 'Mahabharata', Yudhisthira went to heaven on the same vehicle." The book, published by Vimanika Comics, is based on the journey of a mythological demon and the son of Drona, Ashwathaama. After the battle of Kurukshetra, Ashwathaama was cursed by Lord Krishna to be stranded on earth forever, craving for salvation for the sins he committed. Ashwathaama can't accept that he shall not attain salvation and thus the journey of his endless life of pain starts and his only desire is to defeat Krishna. However, he doesn't realise that the key to his salvation is the Pushpak Viman, Arya writes in the book. Set in contemporary times, the book tells the story of five youngsters who come together for an archaeological expedition, which leads them to the discovery of the Pushpak Viman. However, they are unaware that a mythological demon is still alive, seeking the divine aircraft for selfish reasons. "I have shown my story to filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and he was really happy. He was the one who encouraged me to go ahead," Arya said. |
Akshay Kumar looks good in any dress: Sabina Khan Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:19 AM PDT Be it golden hair and a hippie look in "Tashan", a turban in "Singh Is Kinng" or now the retro look in "Action Replayy", Akshay Kumar pulls off every essay with ease and perfection and can never go wrong with his appearance, designer Sabina Khan says. "It's really not difficult to dress Akshay. He has a great physique, looks great and can look good in anything - be it Indian or western," Sabina Khan told IANS on the phone from Mumbai. "I personally feel that he can never be dressed down or go overboard. He pulls off everything nicely," she added. Sabina has been designing for Akshay, 43, for the past four years and is also behind his look in the upcoming "Action Replayy". "The character of Akshay goes back and forth in the movie. So from the 1970s, 80s and the 90s you will see him in today's look as well, which is very contemporary," Sabina explained. "So, in the movie we have tried three different looks for him, but mostly it is very retro, you can say classic. It is basically a period film, which required a lot of research in terms of designing the complete look of various characters," she added. In the movie, Akshay wears colourful clothes starting from red bell-bottoms to a yellow polka-dot shirt, with long hair and long sidelocks as well. Akshay had recently said his long locks in the movie are inspired by Sunil Dutt's in "Zakhmee". While Sabina has taken care of Akshay's wardrobe for the movie, Manish Malhotra has desgined co-star Aishwarya's outfits. Sabina says there was a lot of brainstorming before coming out with the final look. "Once we decided how the look of the movie will be, we sat with our respective clients and discussed the ideas and how they will be looking in the movie," said Sabina. "In our case, Akshay would get some references and we would discuss his looks; it's basically a normal practice. We do it always as it helps," added Sabina, who is also designing Akshay's costumes for "Thank You". Sabina also feels it was a bit difficult to work on this project because they had to do a lot of research and had to watch as many as 100 movies to get their act right. Directed by Vipul Shah, "Action Replayy" is based on a 1994 Gujarati play of the same name. It is a time-travel comedy capturing Mumbai in the 1970s. The film is slated to hit the screens on Diwali. To promote "Action Replayy", Akshay has decided to make all public appearances in the retro style. He will don only retro clothes even while dining out with wife Twinkle. He has asked Sabina to design a full-fledged wardrobe which he can wear over the next few weeks. "Till this Diwali, I will come only in retro look. I don't think any look has been as good as of the 70s. My favourite hero from the 70s is my father-in-law Rajesh Khanna. He was the superstar then," said Akshay. "Action Replayy" will be the fifth time Shah and Akshay are coming together after "Aankhen", "Waqt: The Race Against Time", "Namastey London" and "Singh Is Kinng". |
Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham in the running for Meghna Gulzar's next Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:10 AM PDT Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, who were seen together in "Dostana", are being considered for Meghna Gulzar's next "Milte Hain". While the director is keen on Abhishek, producer Sanjay Gupta had been in touch with John for the film. Sources says Abhishek is being made an offer he can't resist - he has been asked by two of his most favourite girl pals - Vidya Balan, who is playing the female lead in "Milte Hain" and Meghna - to play the male lead. "Abhishek's mother Jayaji and Meghna's father Gulzar saab go back a long way. Jayaji calls Gulzar saab her 'bhai'. Abhishek treats Meghna like a sister. There's no way he can say no to her. On top of this, there's Vidya who has repeatedly expressed a desire to work with Abhishek after 'Paa'. It's unlikely that Abhishek can say no to two such persuasive ladies," said a source. There is a new twist in the tale, though. Gupta has met John for the same part. And let's not forget, John is an old buddy of Vidya too from the time they did "Salaam-e-Ishq" together. Is Gupta more keen on Abhishek than John for the part? "Yes, I've met John for a part. Beyond that I am not revealing anything. Abhishek too is very dear to me. I leave the decision on whom to sign to Meghna." Last heard, Abhishek had apparently shown a keen interest in "Milte Hain". |
Sanjay Leela Bhansali says Aishwarya Rai is my muse Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:03 AM PDT Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is back with "Guzaarish". And he has once again teamed up with Aishwarya Rai in the film and says she is his muse. He also describes her as a timeless actress of Bollywood. "Aishwarya is my muse, my jaan and I get terribly excited when I make a film with her because she is very, very special. Some people are timeless and Aishwarya will be there for another 20 years," Bhansali told reporters Thursday at Cinemax, where the first look of "Guzaarish" was unveiled. This is Bhansali's third film with Aishwarya after "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam" (1999) and "Devdas" (2002). Aishwarya said: "This was a very special film for us. We are glad to share this special piece of work with you before we reveal it to the rest of the world." The director was also all praise for his male lead Hrithik Roshan. "I have never enjoyed working with any other actor as much as I have enjoyed working with Hrithik, just for the kind of talent he has, for the kind of person he is," said Bhansali. In the film Hrithik Roshan will be seen as a magician, while Aishwarya Rai plays a nurse who is estranged from her husband. The film will reportedly touch the issue of controversial mercy killings. Bhansali has even composed music for the film as he couldn't rely upon anyone to get the right effect. There are eight songs in the film and 12 songs in the album. "The reason behind doing music of the film is that I think I understand the characters and understand most what they would express musically than any other music director. Some deep thoughts are my concern, so whatever little music I knew, it was a sort of experiment. But I am happy with what I have done," said Bhansali. Jointly produced by UTV Blink and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film would hit the theatres Nov 19. |

Beauty queen exposed as sex worker, topless model Posted: 22 Sep 2010 10:59 PM PDT A beauty queen has been thrown out of the Miss Great Britain contest after she was found to have posed topless and worked at a massage parlour that offered sex services. Laura Anness, 27, was crowned Miss Plymouth City recently and was gearing up to participate in November's national beauty pageant. The Sun reported Thursday that pageant organisers were not aware that she had in 1999 posed topless as a teenager and worked in a massage parlour offering sex services. Laura, from Saltash, Cornwall, had been stripped of another beauty pageant title contest earlier this year for lying about her age. She then went on to enter Miss Great Britain, where the rules clearly say that participants must have never posed naked or been involved in prostitution. "I'm totally shocked," Miss GB organiser Liz Fuller was quoted as saying. |
