Katy Perry dragged to court for flouting wildlife laws Posted: 26 Oct 2010 04:09 AM PDT A complaint was registered Tuesday at a Ranthambore court against British comedian Russell Brand, singer Katy Perry and four others for flouting environmental laws during the couple's wedding celebrations. According to Akshay Sharma, an advocate who filed the complaint, Perry, Brand and four of their friends, had gone on a safari inside the Ranthmabore National Park Oct 24, the day after their marriage ceremony, where they smoked, drank and carried weapons with them. "They disturbed the wildlife in the park," he alleged. "Inspite of wildlife laws being violated by Katy Perry, Russell Brand, their guests and the hotel administration, the district administration and forest department did not take any action," Sharma said. They also played loud music in their luxury resort, adjoining the national park, Oct 23 and 24, he said in the complaint. The complainant said various sections of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act were violated. Perry and Brand, who married Oct 23 at Aman-i-Khas luxury resort near Ranthambore, left for Male for their honeymoon Monday. The court of chief judicial magistrate in Sawai Madhopur is slated to hear the case Oct 30. |
Tamil Actress Namitha's kidnapping plan foiled Posted: 26 Oct 2010 04:05 AM PDT In a reel like but real life drama, an attempt to kidnap Tamil film actress Namitha was foiled in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu Tuesday. Namitha reached Tiruchy in the morning by plane to take part in a function at Karur, around 330 km from here. She was to travel to Karur by car. At the Trichy airport, a man identified as Periasamy introduced himself to her as the driver arranged by the function organisers. Believing him, she boarded the car which sped away. Seeing this, the real driver informed the organisers, who started chasing the speeding car. The hot pursuit came to an end when the kidnapper car was overtaken and brought to a halt. A subdued Periasamy told police that he was a fan of Namitha. But police said he was giving contradictory answers to other questions. |

Katy Perry and Russell Brand on honeymoon Posted: 26 Oct 2010 03:26 AM PDT After their Indian wedding in Rajasthan's Ranthambore national park, English comedian Russell Brand and American singer Katy Perry Monday left on their honeymoon. "The newly-weds have gone to Male by a chartered flight from Jaipur for their honeymoon," a source in the Aman-i-Khás resort in Ranthambore, where the couple was staying since Oct 20, told IANS. The couple had booked Aman-i-Khás and other nearby hotels for their 85 guests. A source in Jaipur airport said a chartered flight carrying Russell and Katy had taken off at around 3.15 p.m. Russell and Katy had a Hindu ritualistic wedding Saturday amid chanting of Vedic mantras. They took seven rounds of a holy fire to tie their nuptial knots. "They thoroughly enjoyed the wedding party and their stay here and have told us that they would love to return here," the source in the resort said. "Except for a tiger trying to gate-crash the party, the wedding went off as per the plan," the source said. "A tiger known as T24 gate-crashed the wedding venue with a prey around midnight on Oct 23 when the celebrations were on. The guards had a difficult time shooing it away," a security guard at the Aman-i-Khás resort said. |
Vivek Oberoi visits Andhra Pradesh to pay homage to Paritala Ravi Posted: 26 Oct 2010 03:22 AM PDT Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi Monday visited Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur district and paid homage to former legislator Paritala Ravi, whose character he has played in Ram Gopal Varma's new film "Rakta Charitra". Vivek visited Paritala Ghat and offered floral tributes to the former minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader, who was gunned down by his rivals in Anantapur in 2005. Supporters of Paritala family and fans welcomed Vivek. He was taken around the town in a convoy. Greeting people in Telugu, the actor said it was satisfying for him to play the character of Paritala Ravi. He said he was overwhelmed by the fans' response to the movie. Vivek's visit to the town is significant as director Ram Gopal Varma had to cancel his visit Friday. The trilingual film in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil revolves around the feud between families of gangster-turned-politicians Paritala Ravi and Suryanarayana Reddy alias Maddelachervu Suri. It stars Vivek Oberoi, Surya and Shatrughan Sinha in key roles. Ravi was gunned down in 2005 allegedly by the followers of Congress leader Suri. Suri was allegedly involved in the bomb blast in Hyderabad's posh Jubilee Hills. Suri earlier made an attempt to kill Ravi in 1997 at the Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. Though Ravi escaped unhurt, 25 people were killed and many injured in the bomb blast. Anantapur district is part of the backward Rayalaseema region, notorious for factional killings. Factions backed by political parties have been engaged in bloody battles for decades for supremacy in Andhra Pradesh villages, especially in Anantapur district. The movie triggered a row much before the release with peace activists and NGOs opposing it on the ground that it could lead to a fresh spell of violence. Locals also raised objection to Varma using the name of the district in the film. The protests forced him to change the name to Anandapuram. Following protest by TDP workers Friday, Varma agreed to delete objectionable scenes allegedly projecting former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao in poor light in the movie. The TDP leaders alleged that Varma projected Rao as the one who encouraged factional violence by inducting Paritala Ravi into the party. |

Anupam Kher to launch his acting school Posted: 26 Oct 2010 02:53 AM PDT Indian actor Anupam Kher is launching his acting school, Actor Prepares, in New York in a venture that will especially provide a platform to Indian origin actors in North America. The launch is being announced in association with the chairman and CEO of TV Asia, H.R. Shah. It will be the second overseas chapter of the Mumbai-based studio after the one in London. Anupam Kher says, "Acting is a craft which is universal and can be taught, learned and perfected. It is a craft that has now transcended regional and national barriers as reflected in productions with global themes and locales in an era of crossover films. This school will not be Bollywood-centric; it will train actors to perform anywhere." TV ASIA is North America's first 24/7 television channel for the South Asian community. The network was founded in April, 1993, by Indian movie superstar Amitabh Bachchan. In 1997, entrepreneur and community leader H.R. Shah took over TV ASIA and shaped it into a channel that focuses on the Indian community, its culture, traditions and family. Shah says of the joint venture with Kher: "There are a lot of talented Indian American actors in North America who have no platform to promote their talent. "Actor Prepares will educate to graduate and provide the perfect opportunity to this pool of talent which will learn the craft from one of the most famous stage and film actors today. Actor Prepares will help them gain a foothold not just in Bollywood, but in Hollywood." "The concept is in line with TV Asia's own philosophy, home away from home, to promote our culture and education through the medium of film and television," he says. "To that end, we will promote Actor Prepares and its centres in various cities across North America on the channel." |
