Bihar Assembly Election- Two killed while bomb defusion

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 06:45 AM PST

Bihar Assembly elections are finally over and now the eyes are set on November 24, the day on which the counting is scheduled to take place. But there the elections ended pretty badly.

According to the sources, two policemen and few more were killed while the police were defusing a bomb in the final phase of the elections near Londa village, Gaya (district). Those who were killed include a Bihar military police constable and a homeguard and nine others. Three media persons were also injured in the explosion.

There has been 52 per cent of overall turnout for the voting, which is actually a good number as the people dared to vote even after getting threats from the Maoists.

Bihar can be called as a tough zone as far as politics is concerned. Tough because the region still has concerns related to caste factors.

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 06:17 AM PST

The 17th Annual Philadelphia Marathon and Half-Marathon is held on November 21, 2010.

More than 23,000 runners are expected to take part .  This is the first time in marathon racing that the line leading the runners through the course is being sponsored by painting a special pattern on the line.

The Philly Marathon press release says:

Goodyear will make running history by literally putting its mark on the race course.

The marathon’s “blue line” that leads runners through the race’s 26.2 miles will be painted in the pattern of the company’s signature TripleTred(TM) Technology tread pattern.

Check for the Philadelphia Marathon & 1/2 Marathon results here.

Remember that it takes a while for the results to update.

The 2010 course has one less hill for runners to deal with. This change was not done to make the runners happy – there is construction that is preventing Lemon Hill from being used.

What Happens When American Airlines Sues Yahoo Over Trademarked Search Ads

Posted: 20 Nov 2010 12:58 AM PST

aayahoo.jpgAmerican Airlines is suing Yahoo over trademark infringement.

American Airlines says that when Yahoo puts competitors’ ads next to theirs Yahoo sends business to AA’s competitors.

Last year, AA filed a similar suit against Google and settled out of court.

AA says that “when someone searches on an American Airlines-trademarked term confuses the public and directs potential American Airlines customers to other companies.”

Yahoo and Alibaba of China are interlinked. Yahoo Japan is still the number one search engine in Japan, neck and neck with Google.

If AA can get Yahoo to settle as they did Google, it is sure to have reverberations in China and Japan as well.

Then what about other airlines and cruise lines and and and…making similar claims.

Is this a challenge the search engines need to be worried about?

And, btw, what was the settlement that  Google and AA came to?

You Can’t Negotiate with Wal-Mart

Posted: 19 Nov 2010 08:57 PM PST

China’s industrialized provinces are a part of the US economy. No?

The value of cheap imports from China is MORE than the net revenues of the US securities industry.

If wages go up, and the price of imports go up…won’t that have an impact on the US?

Of course, it will.

But, it hasn’t yet.

Last year, despite wages going up at a rate of 10% per year in China, the price of imports from China has dropped! Why? Because of productivitiy jumps.

That’s good, but how long will that continue?

At present, only one fifth of cost hikes in China are passed through to the US. The others are doing their utmost to keep their share of the US market.

And…because as the manager of one factory says, "You can’t negotiate with Wal-Mart ."

Manufacturers in China can’t absorb higher costs forever, or can they?

As long as there is plenty of room for productivity gains, it’s safe to say they can. But for how long?

What do you think?
