Anderson, Swann declared fit for warm-up game

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 03:40 AM PDT

English bowling pair of James Anderson and Graeme Swann have been declared fit for England’s first warm-up game against Western Australia at Perth.

Anderson had earlier suffered from a rib fracture where Swann was hit on his knuckles and could have struggled to make it through. What the warm-up game that starts from tomorrow will do is to give an insight into what the playing eleven for England in the first Test will be.

There are two spots up for grabs – the middle-order batsman for which there is a fight between Ian Bell and Eoin Morgan, and the third fast bowler between Steve Finn and Tim Bresnan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has revoked the contracts of the three Pakistani players involved in spot-fixing. The PCB announced that he trio of Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif will not be eligible for their central contracts till they remained suspended.

PCB said that the central contracts were for the players who could play for the side and not for those who could not play for the team. The trio of Butt, Asif and Amir was suspended by the ICC over allegations of spot-fixing. They appealed against the suspension but the decision was upheld.

Now, the trio will need to appeal against the verdict and an independent tribunal will decide on whether or not the trio was guilty.

India vs New Zealand – Sehwag and Dravid creating wonders on field

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 02:20 AM PDT

Virender Sehwag is projecting some of his spectacular skills on the field in the first test match between India and New Zealand that is taking place in the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera Ahmadabad.

Currently India is 243 for 1. Both Dravid and Sehwag are displaying their talent with some mind blowing shots that have kind of discouraged the Kiwi bowlers, who seem to be not taking enough efforts to put the Indians under pressure.

India lost Gautam Gambhir, who somehow managed to secure 21 runs. Coming back to the hero of the day, Sehwag has as of now hot 22 fours and one- sixer shot. The man has, as of now single handedly handled the match and if some more luck is in his favour then, the guy will definitely be crowned the man of the match, for at least the first match of this series.

Even if New Zealand manages to send Sehwag back to the pavilion then the team would be inviting some more danger to cope up with because powerful players of India like Tendulkar, Dhoni, Laxman and Raina are yet to touch the field today.

Dalai Lama – Embarrassing China?

Posted: 04 Nov 2010 12:00 AM PDT

The Dalai Lama visited Japan's holiest Shinto shrine in Ise, western Japan.

Embarrassing perhaps to China.

I thought the Dalai Lama was Buddhist.

Perhaps, China's leaders think so too.

And, what's with one shrine being holier than another?

Makes me wonder where the church I went to this morning is on the list.

It was the Dalai Lama's second visit to the shrine.dalai.lama.japan.jpg

The shrine is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, the mythical ancestor of the imperial family.

The key word there, of course, is mythical.

The Dalai Lama said "Wherever I go, if time permits, I always pay my respect or pilgrimage to all different religious… temples."

Respect is good….

"I've fully committed promotion of religious harmony," he continued.

Harmony is a great buzz word in China.

Harmony in religion…give it up. It'll never happen.

The DL also said, "Religious faith is sometimes causing divisions and problems. (In the) meantime, all religions have the same message, the message of love … and the same potential to save humanity."

He's right…religions cause divisions and problems.

He's also wrong.

Some religions want to impose guilt on their followers, others grace.

Some religions have no chance of saving humanity and instead want them to wait till another better turn comes around.

And what about the Flying Spaghetti Monster – Where did the idea come from?

The DL bowed twice at the main shrine and purified himself with water.

The water was supplied by a small river inside the site.

Smells of compromise to me….trying to be all things to all people.

When that happens, there is no truth.

And, peace is not the highest priority…truth is.

Wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable.

China need not worry about the Dalai Lama as long as the exiled leader continues to embarrass himself.

Reminds me…Margaret Thatcher once said that people who stand in the middle of the road get hit by cars going in both directions.

Get out of the middle of the road, DL!

The Cost of Avoiding Pirates

Posted: 03 Nov 2010 07:59 PM PDT

Nippon Yusen KK and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd. have had to change routes between Europe and Asia to evade the bands of pirates

somalipirates.jpg operating off the Somali coast. The pirates have been seizing vessels in a portion off the sea lane connecting the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean.

Ships traveling between Europe and Asia must navigate around the Cape of Good Hope adding six to 10 days to the voyage and Y40 million ($400k) in costs per vessel.

“The industry will increasingly avoid dangerous waters,” says Japan’s Shipowners’ Association Chairman.

Already several high-risk vessels operated by Kawasaki Kisen have been sent around the Cape of Good Hope.

Nippon Yusen ships are taking the alternate route, with six traveling around the southern tip of Africa so far.

Should a freight owner refuse to sign off on the altered route, the shipping company shoulders the added costs.

“Considering that the pirates are demanding ransoms in the hundreds of millions of yen, we have no choice but to alleviate the risk,” says JSA.

More than 2,000 vessels with Japanese affiliations travel near the Somali coast each year. Of those roughly 500 slower-moving ships are considering the modified routes.

And who pays for this? Um, we do.
