Natalie Portman writes raunchy comedy film Posted: 13 Nov 2010 02:44 AM PST Actress Natalie Portman is reportedly running around movie studios with the script of a raunchy new comedy film she co-wrote with college friend Laura Moses. Anne Hathaway is likely to star in the film titled "BYO (Bring Your Own)". The film revolves around "two very different twentysomething women who, after finding themselves unlucky in love, decide to throw a party to which each female attendee brings an eligible bachelor". Portman reportedly will star as one of the main female characters. Hathaway is said to have expressed interest to take up the other lead role, reports aceshowbiz.com. Representatives for Hathaway and Portman could not be immediately reached for comment. "BYO" will be the first movie written by Natalie Portman. The project has been passed on by several Hollywood studios, and could still be made via either a studio or independent financing. The 29-year-old beauty will additionally serve as producer for the flick.

Anurag Basu to direct 'Silence' Posted: 13 Nov 2010 02:22 AM PST Anurag Basu had virtually gone missing after the debacle of "Kites". But the director has no plans of moving away from cinema -- he plans to make three films in 2011! "I was supposed to do two films 'Silence' with Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, and the film on Kishore Kumar in 2011. 'Silence' would've happened in 2010. It got pushed ahead because Imtiaz Ali's film 'Rock Star' with Ranbir got delayed. Now between 'Silence' and my Kishore Kumar biopic I am directing a third film. The details are now being worked out," said Anurag. "Silence" with Ranbir and Priyanka is to start shooting in January. The second leading lady is still to be finalised. Anurag had his own reasons for being missing from the film scene till now. Not only did his little daughter suffer a finger injury, his wife fractured her leg too. And Anurag himself was a bit under the weather. So it wasn't a very happy Diwali for this filmmaker who, friends claimed, has gone underground. To that Anurag laughed heartily and said: "Yes, I've been hearing rumours about myself. That I've migrated to Kolkata; that I'm making Bengali films. Ha ha! Just because I did a celebrity chat show on Bangla TV... I suppose that's where the rumours started. I did that chat show because it was earlier hosted by Sourav Ganguly." The three upcoming films should surely put these rumours to rest. As for rumours of Anurag "returning" to television, the director of "Gangster" and "Life In A Metro" said: "I started on television. I never left the medium. We're now producing a serial loosely based on 'Life In A Metro'. We've tentatively titled it 'Dil Khudgarz Hai'." Anurag had hoped to name the serial "Metro". But the title belongs to UTV. Anurag, meanwhile, says it's impossible to make a sequel to "Life In A Metro", which starred a host of actors including Dharmendra, Nafisa Ali, Kay Kay Menon, Shilpa Shetty, Kangana Ranaut and Sharman Joshi among others. "When we made the film, the concept and the treatment were novel. But now so many films have been made on the same theme. Besides, I've many new subjects for films. Why return to what I've already done?"

Abhinav Kashyap to make 'Dabangg 2' Posted: 13 Nov 2010 02:02 AM PST Abhinav Kashyap, whose directorial debut 'Dabangg' is the biggest hit of year so far, rubbishes rumours that he won't be making the sequel of the film but adds that it will take a couple of years for the second edition to hit screens. "This is just a rumour. I want to know if I am not making it, then who is making it? I even spoke to Arbaaz (Khan)...even he doesn't know from where these rumours are coming," Kashyap told IANS. There was much speculation that the sequel to the Salman Khan-starrer would be directed by actor-producer Arbaaz Khan or his brother Sohail Khan. Kashyap added: "'Dabangg' sequel will happen in two years from now because Salman is committed to do two or three films besides television shows and live shows. To make a film, you need time, especially from the lead cast, which I would not have before one and a half years from now." The director says that he would, however, be making another film before the "Dabangg" sequel. "I haven't started writing the script of 'Dabangg 2'. I have started developing the script of what I want to do. I would make another film before 'Dabangg 2'. 'Dabangg2' would not be my second film," said Kashyap.

Hollywood Movie: 'The Social Network' Review Posted: 13 Nov 2010 01:55 AM PST Film: "The Social Network"; Director: David Fincher; Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Rooney Mara, Bryan Barter, Dustin Fitzsimons; Rating:*** It had to take geniuses to pull this impossibility. How else can you explain engagement in a film on something that is impossible to show visually - technical wizardry? Many films have tried, but where others have failed, "The Social Network" soars, thanks largely to a brilliant script by Aaron Sorkin and the equally brilliant direction of David Fincher. The global adulation for the film seems justified. Sadly, it suffers from major drawbacks that are, with equal brilliance, swept under the carpet of its sharp wit, edgy editing and a crisp direction. Mark Zuckerberg is a computer nerd, but with zero social skills. The film begins with him being dumped by a girl. He tries to take revenge that further alienates the girl, but ends up leading to the creation of 'The Facebook' or 'Facebook' as we know today. On the way he is sued by his business partners, manages to have the most 'friends' in the world but fails, till the end, to have a girl. "The Social Network" looks at Zuckerberg as a saviour of humanity -- that is its first flaw. Facebook may have changed the way we interact considerably, but neither was it the first, nor has it changed the world irrevocably, yet. The excessive adulation for its creator thus sounds anomalous. Perhaps we cannot blame the director and the writer for this. Rarely has a public figure got a film so quick in his career. But it couldn't wait, after all just like MySpace and Orkut before, Facebook might soon be off our radar. Obviously they had to be quick. Even the makers of "Pirates of the Silicon Valley", the story of another jerky nerd, Steve Jobs, and the birth of personal computing that has indeed changed the world, does not succeed as well "The Social Network", despite being more politically correct. Indeed this film takes the best of "Pirates…" while smoothening out its rough. Yet, the basic question remains, does Zuckerberg deserve a film at all? Answer in the yes would imply that you truly believe that Facebook has changed the face of the earth. Which, to the lucky few who can spend hours daily on Facebook, would be the truth. But not the vast majority who don't even know what it is. Like superhero films, Hollywood also has its super-nerd films. And this has to be the mother of them all. But "The Social Network" does suffer from an overdose of wit, which gets tiring after a certain point, and which makes an otherwise beautiful climax, look drab. The other major problem is when it raises Mark Zuckerberg into not just a technological icon, which he rightfully is, but into a cultural icon, thus justifying all his flaws.
