Indian Badminton player Jwala Gutta is not much bothered about the fact that she droped out of the top 10 of the mixed doubles rankings. Jwala says that, the Year 2010 was the most remarkable year for her career.

“I know my ranking in mixed doubles has dropped but that is because I choose not to play tournaments after the Commonwealth Games. I was really tired and wanted a break. I am not worried about my rankings as what matters is performance," Jwala said.

The player is quite confident about her skills and says that, she can rise her rankings again and that her performance is more important to her than her rankings. Jwala said that, the Common Wealth Games have not even given popularity to the badminton players but have also made the game popular among the masses.

The player has not made any New Year resolutions but has promised to stay focused at the game in the coming year.

Bayer Aspirin–The Wonder Drug saving life from heart attacks

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 09:46 PM PST

Aspirin reduces the risk of death by up to 23 percent if administered when a heart attack is suspected and for 30 days thereafter. The use of aspirin as a heart attack first aid could potentially save 10,000 lives each year. Aspirin helps prevent the aggregation of platelets or blood clotting. Platelets release a prostaglandin called thromboxane. Aspirin’s irreversible prostaglandin blocking ability inhibits the biosynthesis of thromboxane and, consequently, reduces the tendency for blood to clot. This is the reason aspirin should not be used with prescription drugs for anticoagulation (thinning the blood) unless directed by a doctor.

Aspirin reduces the production of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are produced in tissues throughout the body. Prostaglandins have many functions. They are part of the chemical messenger systems involved in feeling pain, fever, the redness and swelling that can accompany injuries, and even in contracting certain muscles, for example, the uterus. Since aspirin lowers the amount of prostaglandins, it can help alleviate conditions like pain, fever and the discomfort of menstrual cramps.

Ice-Snow Sculpture Expo “Exotic France in Harbin”

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:54 PM PST

I have been to the Ice-Snow Sculpture Expo in Harbin but not this year's "Exotic France in Harbin."

Harbing sits way up in north east China just south of Siberia.

It's cold up there.

"How cold, Bill?"

So cold that people tell jokes in December but nobody laughs until March – when the jokes thaw out.

Indeed, my friend and I bundled up and went for a walk in the evening.

Under the temperature display it was -26C.

We wandered up to an old Russian Orthodox Church where there was a loud speaker playing a trumpet solo – I think the it was "Swanee River."

But, the sound was so crisp, so clear, so pure, tears came down and froze to my cheeks.

One of those pleasure moments in life indeed it was for me.

How about you? When/what is one of your best memories?

China’s Top 500 Companies Saw Profits Rise 23% in 2005 – Sinopec is # 1

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 02:53 PM PST

China’s Big 500 are making money and a lot of it. Sinopec is showing them how it is done.

The top 500 companies in China made (that is profited) abt. $81.4 billion in 2005.

The best performers were:

1. petrochemicals

2. natural gas exploration

3. banking

4. ferrous metal companies

These four industries alone accounted for almost half of the profits.

The big performer, Sinopec had revenue of more than $1 billion, up 30% from the previous year.

Why am I not surprised that a stupid oil company is on top. That’s the way it is here in the US as well.

Sinopec cleared about a quarter of a million dollars.

China’s big electric company – State Power Grid – was number two.

China National Petroleum, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China and China Mobile were #3-5.

Imagine that, two of the top three performers in China are oil companies. I wonder why.

Some things are the same everywhere.

What do you think?

74-year old, Poppa Neutrino sets sail for China from California on homemade raft

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 10:51 AM PST

In a homemade raft, about the size of a VW bus, with a 5 horsepower outboard motor, a 74-year old man, Poppa Neutrino, has his sights on China via San Francisco Bay, from Stockton.

April 17th is the date for him to clear the Golden Gate Bridge and see nothing but blue water in front of him.

It will not be the first time for Neutrino to make a trans-ocean trip. He took his family on a homemade boat across the Atlantic and lived to talk about it.

This time, only his dog will go with him.

I hope I have the spunk to tackle big projects, to dream dreams, when I am 74-years old.

What will you be doing when you are 74-years old?
