Liu Xiaobo awarded 2010 Nobel Peace Prize

Posted: 11 Dec 2010 02:46 AM PST

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu Xiaobo in Oslo, Norway On December 10, 2010

Many news agencies have reported Liu could not attend because he was imprisoned for subversion and is serving an 11-year sentence.  He wrote articles calling for political reform in China.

Liu's wife was been placed under house arrest to prevent her from traveling to Oslo to receive the medal and check for $1.5 million.

The box containing the Nobel Peace Prize medal was placed on an empty chair for the ceremony.

The Human Rights Now blog reports: The Nobel Committee's decision to award this year's Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo is undoubtedly a tribute to the memory of the 1989 pro-democracy movement that the Chinese government has been consistently trying to erase over the last two decades.

The Huffington Post tells us: Friday’s ceremony was the first time in 74 years the prestigious $1.4 million award was not handed over, because Liu is serving an 11-year sentence in China on subversion charges for urging sweeping changes to Beijing’s one-party communist political system.

This was the first time in 74 years that the Nobel Committee was not able to present the award.  Rules say the award may only be presented to the recipient or their immediate family.

Nick Brooks still questioned in death of Sylvie Cachay

Posted: 11 Dec 2010 02:43 AM PST

Some of the blogs are telling us that Sylvie recently broke up with Nick.  They are puzzled why she checked into exclusive Soho House with him.

Some blogs are claiming that Sylvie accused Nick of setting her apartment on fire earlier.

Even stranger is the fact that reports have surfaced that Nick Brooks hooked up with Sylvie right after her dog was run over.  She needed someone to console her and he was available.

Her parents said after a while, Sylvie wanted Nick to get a job as he was not working.

Breaking News Theme has a statement from Sylvie's father: But the breakup was amicable – and there was no hint of violence, Dr. Antonio Cachay said.  "They were actually broken up," said Cachay, a respected ear, nose and throat specialist in this posh D.C. suburb. "That was the last news we had in Cancun."

While no one has been arrested, police are in the process of obtaining a warrant to examine Nick Brooks.

Sylvie's parents believe that foul play was involved in their daughter's death.  They are waiting on a second opinion for the autopsy to see if something was missed.

Honolulu Marathon Results 2010

Posted: 11 Dec 2010 02:40 AM PST

The Honolulu Marathon will being on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 5 am.  About 22,000 runners are registered for the race.

The Honolulu Marathon is the world’s sixth largest marathon and is a qualifying marathon for the Boston Marathon.

The Honolulu Marathon attracts a large number of Japanese participants because it has no cut off time for finishing the run.  This is not the case for many marathons in Japan.

“About 13,000 runners have come from Japan this year. They represent about 60 percent of the total entrants. Last year, there were 14,400 entrants from Japan,” reported KITV.

However, the current valuation of the Japanese yen at an all time high, even with fewer participants,  more tourist money is expected to be spent. This  will be a boon for the local economy which is still reeling from the recession.   Estimates put that figure around $100 million.

The course itself is not a fast course because of the terrain, but nonetheless a popular one for marathoners.   Many winners have gone one to place well or win the Boston Marathon.

Last year’s men’s winner was Kenya’s Patrick Ivuti with a winning time of 2:12:14, Ivuti also placed first in 2008.  The 2009 woman’s winner was Svetlana Zakharova from Russia, finishing at 2:28:34

Navy railgun: weapon from hell or game changer?

Posted: 11 Dec 2010 02:39 AM PST

The U S Navy set a world record in a powerful railgun shot: 33 megajoules of power.  They beat their old record of 2 megajoules set in 2008.

What this means is that a bullet about 4 inches in diameter and a foot or so long can destroy targets up to 110 nautical miles away.

It is being reported that this weapon will eliminate much of the need for explosives aboard a ship that would usually be needed to fire traditional guns which only have a range of 20 miles or so.

The projectile traveled at Mach 8 which is more than 6,100 MPH.

Look at the video of the record-breaking test shot.

Wired reports: There wasn't much left of the 23-pound bullet, just a scalded piece of squat metal. That's what happens when an enormous electromagnetic gun sends its ammo rocketing 5,500 feet in a single second.

Mashable tells us: This kind of weapon requires no explosion to get a projectile from point A to point B. Rather, a railgun uses an electromagnetic current to accomplish the task, and it does so at previously unimaginable velocities.

The railgun has no moving parts except for the projectile.

It does not use any explosives, which means it makes for a safer and greener operating environment.
