Russian flight skids off the runway 1 killed

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 01:56 AM PST

In an attempt to make an emergency landing by a Russian flight in Moscow, about eight people were injured while killing one passenger, after the plane skidded of the runway.

The spokeswoman of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, Veronika Smolskaya said that, after all the three engines of the plane had failed, the plane made an emergency landing. She also said that there were about 155 passengers on board including seven children.

According to the spokeswoman, the flight took off from the Vnukovo airport from Moscow and was heading towards Makhachkala in southern Russia. The plane landed just half an hour after the plane took off from Moscow.

The plane belonged to the Dagestani Airline and was a Tupolev – 154. The Tupolev – 154 was designed in the mid 1960s. Since the year 1968 there have been about 37 accidents reported of the Tupolev – 154. However most of the accidents were caused due to factors which were not related to the aircraft.

The Brookings Institution

From the Brookings Institution web site.

"The Brookings Institution traces its beginnings to 1916, when a group of leading reformers founded the Institute for Government Research (IGR), the first private organization devoted to analyzing public policy issues at the national level.

In 1922 and 1924, one of IGR’s backers, Robert Somers Brookings (1850-1932), established two supporting sister organizations: the Institute of Economics and a graduate school bearing his name.

In 1927, the three groups merged to form the Brookings Institution, honoring the businessman from St. Louis whose leadership shaped the earlier organizations.

Time line of Brookings history: can be found at the site.

So, why am I mentioning this Institution here?

Two reasons –

1. The institution is currently discussing President Hu Jintao’s Upcoming Visit .

2. I recently attended a presentation of five Brookings Institution Fellows at UC San Francisco.

In subsequent blogs, I want to introduce the five fellows and then in further blogs I will introduce some of the key points each made that might/will/could affect Asian business practices – in China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

China’s Tax Revenues Grow by more than 20%

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 01:22 AM PST

For the second consecutive year China has had tax revenues grow by more than 20%. 20% in 2005 and 22% in 2006.

Revenues totalled 3.8 trillion yuan ($480 billion) in 2006.

The increased revenues are a result of the better economy and efforts to collect more taxes from foreign and privately owned Chinese businesses.

2007 will be another 10% growth year and more taxes collected.

More taxes, from import tariffs, land use and real estate transactions are expected over time.

My accountant once told me that paying a lot of taxes is good…it equates to more income.

It is also good to pay more taxes if the tax revenue managers redistribute them fairly…communist or otherwise.

What do you think?

According to the Information from ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney, The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. The Red Sox have received permission from Major League Baseball to negotiate with Gonzalez on a new contract, the sources said, and Gonzalez’s physical examination, one of the last hurdles to the deal, could happen Saturday.
